I love this thread. In some ways I really expected it to go the other way and a load of leaders come on and drown out what the OP was trying to say and I'm so glad it didn't. I bet loads of other people have read this thread who were feeling the same or had a ***end game LS where they have to put up with more crap than anyone should, and have since reading this realised they could do better and broken it.

No way!

I'm all for helping new players because I remember what it was like to be new (I swear most end game players either forget this or try to convince themselves they've always been "uber leet")

My social shell Turtle, is amazing. It doesn't matter what level you are, or your rank, it accepts everyone and it helps everyone. Every day, everyone goes off to help someone get something, or get a promy done or just get the rank 3 fight done or some AF. People are always helping eachother, I don't think I've had a LS so selfless.

When I help a new player, like buy them something they need or give them advice and they thank me and ask what they can do to repay me, I tell them to do the same for a new player they see who needs help. I hope it passes on the message to be good to other players but I really don't know whether anyone does it lol.

Well, I've "grown up" in a slightly different environment. I didn't get much help at the beginning, so when I saw new users struggling I used to think "Well, noone helped me out with that, so why should I go out of my way to do so either?".

But yeah, once you find a good group of people it's completely different. You just want everyone else to advance. And you want people to not go through the hours of struggling and shouting.

Besides you get what you give.

That's lame :( Especially seeing as we're on the same server!

I was really lucky, I was given a LS when I was level 5 (although I did wonder where the voices were coming from at first) and I think that's really important because that's where most players get advice, help and friends. I think that's why Turtle likes to help out lowbies.

One of my best friends in the game, I can't remember this but he tells me apparently when he was a lowbie and I wasn't much higher I got some orc off of him in wron and believe me he's saved my *** countless times since! What goes around definitely comes around, in the good sense ;)

I remember stepping out of San D'Oria the first time and this person(I think it was darkscorpion, don't know if you know her/him) started talking to me about macros, I was like 'wtf' and being a major while taking ages to finally get a basic target macro in. >.>

And I know why you don't remember the situation with your friend. It's probably because helping users out comes naturally, when you see someone in trouble you help out. But BEING helped out is a little more memorable. It's strange that I remember a lot of the people that helped me out a long time ago.

Yeah I vaguely know that person. I think I was in a LS a long long time ago with them...

My first job was WAR and a lovely player told me how to make a Provoke Macros so I could tank in the dunes without being a complete failure. She also got me a GA cause I was using a sword because I didn't know any better. She wasn't condescending at all and I think that's important too. I wouldn't take advice from someone if they were too high and mighty about it >_> but then I'm stubborn.

For some reason, I have a few linkshells in my storage I never touch. Two of them are endgame related. I'm just not really into that stuff. Sure, I'm curious about it and will be introduced into a Dynamis LS through a friend in a run tonight, but I just can't shake off the idea that endgame devours your life. I've seen people get into endgame too much that they only came online for endgame. I'll probably miss out on a couple of items if I were to join Dynamis, because I would not attend it fully. I mean... sometimes there are things in RL to do that takes priority. RL always takes priority! I didn't want to go away for the weekend a few weeks ago, but I went anyway and had a good time and got skillups on the social skill. I'm only active in one single linkshell, a social one, with people I've met years ago but lost contact with until a few months back. I only switch to one other linkshell when me and my best ingame friend round up a couple of people from that linkshell for a quest or mission or NM fight.

It can really ruin the game if you aren't careful. When kings first became a not-JP only thing about 3+ years ago I was in a linkshell like this. I was hardcore about kings for about 4 months. In the end I had to leave the game for 2-3 months because I was so burned out from it.
There are a few linkshells that don't require you to be at every hnm, but I think most do. I can't imagine how much more tedious it is now with TAU and WOTG HNMs. I mean, seriously.. I am familiar with a lot of people who come on only for this stuff. The fights are fun and all that jazz, but camping for 3+ hours to get outclaimed just kills your soul.

I met my best friend in the dunes when we were both reasonably nub-like. We've never been in the same linkshell, but these are the kinds of friends that make this game worth playing. I've made friends in events linkshells, but friends you madke in event linkshells come and go too often. It's sad. Lost touch with so many people over the years.
I miss being a noob.

That's why I like to go on my mule sometimes and be all noob like. Done that for 30 THF levels and 14 RNG levels now XD.

Met my best friend through an old social linkshell, of which we are now the last two still playing. Don't remember where we met in person though... Probably Jeuno. Been doing stuff together ever since.

The other linkshell I mentioned has a few organized events, and are nice people and all, but the shell itself isn't too social i.m.o. When I went out to do ZM4-12 with a few from the LS, the party was mostly silent. Makes it hard to get to know them. One of them even told me things you'd normally tell a noob. But after those 9 missions, we've developed a better understanding of eachother and he wasn't so bad.

I think people forget what it was like to be a noob.

Thats why you get most of these bad endgame LSs who only look out for themselves.

Which also creates bad endgame LSs who only look out for themselves....

damn circles...

When I first started playing I was completely clueless... now I am just a little less clueless. Pandora was my first linkshell and the first day I received a pearl from them they had someone come and help me do a mission. They always had time to answer my questions and show me how to send /tells and guide me along the way zone to zone.
It got to be the standing joke if they had to say "Jade? Did you know.....?" and fill in the blank and they knew if they had to ask me that to just go ahead and presume I didn't know. lol

I would have random ppl stop and help escort me from wron to the dunes or escort me back to a safe area so I could run home. One guy even stopped and gave me 5k to help with some gear! I was very thrilled! Ls members would take me on the long journey to jeuno and then get me the necessary gear because I was so poor.

Now adays I never fail to stop and help escort, cure, raise or do whatever is needed to help a lower level. I will give them a little gil as well just to get them started.

It just makes the game a little more fun,and maybe by showing a little kindness they will do the same in return. now if they are a jerk then next time won't be so nice either.

Going to share my own story, would probably help explain why I although appear as a new person, I'm actually not.

I'm a player from the 05/06 era, and a very short time from 04, needless to say comparing this era to back then, people wise has changed so much that sometimes I wonder why they bother to play. I tried doing my AF one day, 52 PLD was my highest so no soloing, stood in WG a few times and shouted, I swear some frenchmen just told me to solo it and after a few hours and waning into JP times I stopped. Got lucky though and a PUP friend saw my plight, basicly soloed my entire AF.

The LS I run basicly all we do is help each other and enjoy playing this as the game it is, or if we aren't busy and someone does we'll do our best to help them if possible, but I'm so worried now about people that are selfish or hateful getting in, I personally screen everyone just to make sure.

But also I want to point out, that those who help could also be tired of getting burned, I have had a few incidents where people have abused my help and had to make changes to deal with such things. I could see some getting so feed up they just don't want to deal with it anymore.

there is that tendancy to "let people push you around" though.
"maybe if i just stick with them long enough i'll get what i'm looking for"
if you're really having that much trouble getting gear from end game LSs then find comparable gear that is easier to obtain.
creating drama publicly tends to put you into the "push this person around" or "ostrasize" group

edit: learn to low man things with a group of people you can trust.

This thread is both epic and tragic all at once.

It's awesome to see camaraderie, and the desire for "fun" still lives on FFXI, equally sad to see it scattered across the servers.

I'm just glad to have bothered to check out AH forums before I completely burned out on the past 7 years of MMOing.
Thanks to this thread, I've met Clinpachi, and Aegls ingame, and they're both awesome!

I still remember when I saw my first SAM as a lowbie RDM. He was the leader of my first social LS and he gave me a pearl when I was around level 3 or 4 lol. And I thought he was the best player ever XD. Especially when he took me into his MH to show me all the stuff he had. And I ended up in an all windurst based LS, which was helpful because I was the only one lvling her first 75 while most these guys already had atleast 2 or 3. I still remember one their members taking me out to camp the pilgrim's wand NM. And it became known then that I had a thing for NMs and running up and grabbing them without much warning XD. So that when later on I was on boat with 1 of them and mind you I was around lvl 40 or so, Sea Horror appeared. No one ever told me about him, and all the times I was ever on boat I never seen him myself. So I just assumed he was a normal mob and ran up and smacked him. Course I died XD and I see my friend come back from AFK and go what happen what did you smack?!! Followed by OMG Sea Horror >.>. I dunno why but those times always make me smile and giggle. That same SAM tho ended up finding me not long ago and getting me into the wonderful endgame LS im in now.

Lately though it just makes me sad when I see people abuse others who are helpful on the game. Other day I had one guy kept sending me tells in WG asking me for gil or could I please use my ISP and buy him a coin. Said he had no gil and no ISP at all to get him a coin, and he couldn't go back to his home nation. Sounds kinna ironically like a RL bum no? Well at the time I was afk so when I came back to this flood of tells I was like O.o. And come find out he had hit up 4 of my friends all same time with this line. And some others in WG as well. Then there was one friend I had who listen to this guy *** and moan in our LS about gear he wished he had. So he told the guy if you get to lvl that you can wear that gear, I'll buy it for you. So the guy does, and of course my friend buys him that gear. Then he turns around and takes that nice gear and puts it on AH and sells it >.>; Seriously people like that are what ruin the kindness that some have. Like someone said, they end up becoming tired of it all and don't want to help period.

This right here is why I'm real reluctant to want to recruit new people to my LS. I got sick of people just coming around only when they wanted something and of people who didn't realize I have my own things to do as well, so I wouldn't drop what I was doing right then and there to help with what they wanted, especially if it's soloable. That's what annoys me a lot, when people ask for help not because they can't handle it themselves, but because they're lazy. The LS now is really small, but the few people who are there I do know aren't going to just use me, and I don't mind helping them because I know they'll return the favor and they appreciate my assistance. I also enjoy their company.

I don't place any faith in anyone in this game. I was the naive MMO player, with FFXI being my first MMO years ago. I guess I'm to blame, maybe I was too idealistic, or whatever, but I had that nice little picture of LS camaraderie shattered. Since then, I don't waste my time trying to "make friends" or any type of "connections" in any LS I'm in.
There's only really one person I actually talk to in-game, and that's a friend from IRL that I've known for years.

short version: people [everyone, you, me, him, & her] are garbage

Tonight's top stories:
Allegations that Vana'diel's adventurers have been on a steady decline in those all-important team effort and camaraderie factors for several years. I'm not in any endgame linkshell(HNM) anymore. I do limbus/sea on a regular basis, and enjoy it, mainly since I do it with my friends. What makes me put a grin on my face when I type this is that the few people I remember from back when I was a noob is people who helped me out. One of them is "Bassist", he was a 55-ish SAM Galka back then, and I remember him giving me 5k gil, wich, back then was alot to me:D Also, Tenkutaku, thanks alot for the wolf mantle +1 you bought me. That piece of crap gear(wich I see now) made my day in FFXI back then, like 5 years ago. The mantle is, yes, useless lol, but the kindness behind him giving it to me ment so much.

I also helped out a linkshell member exping the other day on her dark towards her maat's cap, and I made the party and invited her. I asked if people wanted to try something else than ToAU areas(Was lv60 party), and surprizingly they all agreed to it(the BRD also!:D). We went to Bibiki Bay as me tanking on WAR/BLU since no NIN or PLD was avaliable. We got a link on the first pull and everyone died lmao, but it was so fun! The kind RDM actually HP's only to come back and raise us all. We managed to get the party going at a decent rate after the PUP swapped from RNG pet to WHM pet(GO PUP! cheeeers!). Disbanded after an hour-ish, and it was all just full of awesomeness. Bringing back memories from the old days are really something you should consider when atleast trying to exp a job, since it's so common now wich camps you go to at any given moment, what page to get, and what jobs to pick fo certain camps. Try someone out of the ordinary(merit in Va_Vaule on gigas/Castle O, or Xar) it might suck ***, but hell, it's fun!

Edit* Hmm. Posting [ S ] for past areas made me, somehow cross out the text O.o Oh well, you can still read it LoL

didnt read any other posts just the OP.

i suggest to you a few things to avoid ur problem.

1. dont suck, make it clear u dont suck. Be atleast capped on gear you dont need an LS for. if you are not, then you havent reached "the end" to move on to "end" game.

2. get a *** bot and make your self worthwhile, if by endgame you mean an HNM LS. anything else you can just do with your own circle of people.

3. be dedicated and consistant, if you got a decent RL there is a good chance some low life will be ahead of you on anything you want.

4. from the amount of emoness in your post i'll asume your a woman, you got ***... use them! use the fact ur a woman to take advantage of status in an LS, not so much abuse it, but just establish a stable spot. this is FF, thats what ***... errr i mean woman do. play your role or put the game down and go back to the kitchen~ :p

OP the problem is that you're on Siren. Worst server I've ever seen. No one does anything outside of besieged. Carbuncle is a little better. I actually really liked seraph. That is a good server due to people learning by example from good shells like btl or i guess now kanzen. i too have had some experiences with people getting offended on siren by simple advice like "cure the person with hate while you're on pld" and having it completely disregarded with "don't tell me how to play".

I also agree that it's a losing battle though and as a result I'm counting the days until xiv. I miss things like seeing the sunrise in la theine for the first time and not having to kill unicorns every damn day. I want all those new experiences again in xiv.

I remember what it was like being new and never getting help, so i vowed to always help people. When i got my hands on an unlit lantern after pulling teeth for help with zm4 i said i'd never throw it away. ( paid off with shantotto huh?) I still try to help people out with random shouts when I can but one of the problems is that there simply is no time when you're in hnm's so i have to try and level new jobs or do missions or whatever i want in my downtime. I want to know who the people are who never do anything though and still don't help because they must be everywhere.

didnt read any other posts just the OP.

i suggest to you a few things to avoid ur problem.

1. dont suck, make it clear u dont suck.

This post pretty much describes everything this entire thread has been rallying against.
