20th Anniversary Expectations...

I've come to the conclusion that what they find significant is something insignificant to the rest of us. They've had a few other updates where they talked about how excited they were about where the VR missions were going, then end up throwing us in the same zones or in front of the same mission NPCs (e.g. desk smasher). Yay.

When they talk about how excited they are for something, then it just ends up being more running around and watching boring *** cut scenes, it just shows me they are disconnected from what a lot of the players really want and expect. Part of me expects it may be a cultural thing and the JP players are more invested in this sort of thing than the NA playerbase, but it's also likely they are doing what they have with the resources they are assigned and trying to make the best of it.

Yeah, you're misremembering. FFXI always drops content with the monthly updates.

The "big thing" isn't an official term. Most people are wanting the new endgame and Empy +3, so unless someone is expecting something bigger that SE has never hinted towards (like a full new expansion or new jobs), that's it.

I am referring to articles, 3rd party videos, and forum comments from the "whatever I say is truth" people. That's why I mentioned that I see a lot of speculation and guessing but if something official was announced, I missed it.

SE has said absolutely nothing about anything of note coming other than new endgame and Empy +3 some time this year (but never said it was coming on the 20th anniversary).

And the 1 hour lockout in Einherjar and get rid of the *** JP Midnight lockout in Arrapago.

Add to this all the complexity of their term "this year" being interpreted as Calendar Year or Fiscal Year...its been very amorphous and hard to now separate speculation from fact.

New title BGM. Well, okay. I guess that's the big anniversary surprise then, let's hope everyone enjoys it because the next milestone anniversary is a long way away.

The new content comes at the end of the Voracious Resurgence missions.

They would have to create ridiculousfights to combat empy+3 brokenness not surprised its taking a while.

Tho I want more Alliance Content. Odyssey is such a drag.

They just need to make Empy+3 take 1.5 months per item/per job and they'll be good to go for another 10 years.

The "something big" for the 20th anniversary talks started cropping up after the Freshly Picked Vana'diel 44 Digest back in 2019 when this particular line was said:

They were pretty vague, so the "long-term goal" could've been anything. The Voracious Resurgence conclusion or the FFXI Mobile project (RIP) would be my top guesses.

Wasn't the mobile project cancelled by this point?

The earliest talks I can find about it being cancelled was in December 2020 (Reddit Post), so it wasn't officially cancelled at the time of their 44th Digest post in March 2019.

I mean given ROV was supposed to be the end of new content, I'm sure the dev team thinks master levels, VR missions and Ody are "Big" additions. new title screen BGM? HUGE

Things they have actually mentioned being in development are the job balancing system (hopefully didn't get downgraded to master levels) and eventual emp +2/3 which im sure will be implemented over time, maybe starting with head/hands and expanding to the rest or something like that so we don't knock them out in a month? with any luck chapter 8 of VR will stop beating around the bush(in) and set a course for the endgame content, we got to enter escha early on in the ROV storyline

I'm pretty sure the "job balancing system" was a mistranation, and referred to the various job adjustments they were periodically doing (like Majesty PLD).

It's going to be Dyna (D) dream world and that's it. You guys have high hopes for a dying game that is running on fumes in the form of multi-box players, take you servers population and divide it by 3 and that about the population that's left playing this game. sorry the game is dead...

Thankfully the forums aren't, as they're kept afloat by people saying the same thing since 2006.

So I was hoping for some "big" news leading up to this patch for the 20th anniversary. They have said multiple times they had something big planned. Unless I am missing a something, there hasn't been anything talked about aside from interviews and VR.

What "big" thing can still be planned if the patch notes are out and showing the standard fair and ambuscade repeats?

I went from hopeful for something awesome to doubting we will actually get anything new, content wise.

Not once did they ever say the big thing they were planning was coming out on the anniversary. SE didn't get you, you got yourself.

We know we're getting new endgame and Empy +3 this year, which is a 99% chance what they were talking about, but there was zero reason to believe we were getting anything major this month.

As long as there is a vibrant RMT market and merc bots on every server, the game is not dead.

I can totally be wrong, Geriond, but I recall them stating they had a big reveal of sorts planned for the 20th Anniversary.

You are right in my speculating that it is related to content though.
