China surpassed Japan as the world's second largest economy today. It is on track to overtake the United States by 2025.

If you count the European Union as one economic zone (as most economists do, as they share a currency and cannot independently adjust their own economic policy), then the EU surpassed the United States in 2007.

Is the UK part of the EU in that sense? Seeming as England in particular spazzed about the Euro and as such we still use the Pound. Edit: Dammit Aeyela. D=

When you have a workforce that large working for that little without all of the benefits that the rest of the world's large economies provide, its no surprise. The again, this is a country that mass ships children's jewelry with cadmium in it? Very, very sad.

China (and India) will just see the same economic trending that occurred in Japan and Taiwan in the late 20th century...they will shift from cheap-labour manufacturing zones into full-fledged consumers and service industries. Certainly this may take many years to fully occur in such a large country with diverse regions, but the pattern will likely hold out (barring any world wars.)

Then the world will shift to Africa for its cheap labour. China has already begun making economic overtures to various African nations to secure manufacturing, mineral resource, and shipping arrangements for the coming century.

Hang on, if EU passed us in 07, and China just now passed Japan to fall into 2nd place, how is it they're surpassing us in 2025?

Unless I misread something >_>

Isn't it kind of ironic that a communist nation like China now has the second largest economy? Seems like that should be more of a capitalist thing.

They absorbed Hong Kong and want so badly to get Taiwan. They aren't about to go back to collective farms as a nation-wide economic model anytime soon. They like to pride themselves as a nation "of many systems."

Unlike most of communist countries, China is more "capitalist" than most of (if not all) true capitalist countries. In comparison, Scandinavian countries, Canada, and some others are more "communist" than China.

I agree, they aren't a single country. Comparing a united economy to a country's economy isn't exactly fair.

Quote:
“China is in fact already the second-biggest economy. With the expansion of the economic base, the growth rate should certainly gradually slow down,” Mr Yi, who is also deputy central bank governor, said in an interview on the Safe website.

However, Mr Yi’s comment fell far short of formal seizure of a title that Japan has held for just over four decades, especially given that he did not specify whether he was talking about China’s GDP at market prices or in purchasing power parity terms.

In PPP terms, often a more telling measure of economic weight, China has already been the second-largest economy for years.

China-based economists point out that Tokyo reports detailed and relatively accurate economic data. Beijing’s sketchier numbers potentially under-report its economy by as much as 20 per cent, meaning China may have really been number two for some time, even in dollar terms.

Meh

Unless you want me to start counting ever single territory or region in every single country. As some people in your country already want to be considered seperate

I think the key-word is countries or states.

I'm not being argumentative, the USA is a collective of countries, so is the EU, so it is fair to make a comparison between them.
