Amazing. Worth every penny for the 1st Class Edition. I can totally see why SE is unashamedly milking it for what it's worth (a Shinra... clutch? Okay, whatever works I guess...).
Without having finished Remake part 1, I can already tell that it's going to suck waiting for part 2. Just hoping they don't take too long on PS5, and that Diablo IV or Elder Scrolls VI comes out in the interim.
Would be stunned if part 2 came out on PS4 instead of PS5.

Well... that ending is going to cause controversy. Be really interesting to see where this goes in the next few parts. Massive spoiler below of course.
Red XIII explains what he believes the 'specters' are. He calls them 'Whispers' and 'Arbiters of Fate'. Apparently the fate of the planet is pre-determined and the 'Whispers' appear whenever someone does something, or something happens that threatens that fate. This is why they show up at moments when the plot was about to diverge from the original story, like Cloud about to leave before going on AVALANCHE's second mission, them stopping Tifa from preventing the Sector Seven plate falling and them saving Barret's life after he is mortally wounded by Sephiroth/Jenova (that might have been his deceased wife... be great if it is revealed to be).
My theory is that the Whispers are souls who were in the Lifestream but were warped when the Mako reactors drained them out of it for power. This is why they are determined to keep the fate of the planet on an extinction path with Sephiroth's destined summoning of Meteor. They want the people to have a do-over since they're doing so much damage to the planet. I think that they will eventually tell Aerith that she has to die and this is what will make her go off to the City of the Ancients to meet her end at Sephiroth's sword. I always thought that her motivation for just running off came out of nowhere in the original and this might explain it better.
Some of the things the Remake did which actually fixed plot holes. I always thought it very strange that no other Shinra soldiers ever recognized Cloud from their time in basic training. Here, they do, twice actually. The second time is when Cloud is in the Shinra HQ and is why nobody stops him; because they know who he is.
The original had moments where first-time players had an inkling that something was wrong with Cloud before the big reveal and it's done better here I think. This time around Aerith shows concern over Cloud's mental state and she already suspects something is badly amiss. That iconic scene of the two on the play-park slide is where she starts calling it into question.
I really liked the fact that the Remake goes into what Mako Poisoning is early on, and heavily hints at the fact that Hojo's master plan (Jenova Reunion) is already in motion. You see the full scale of the messed up ***Hojo has been up to in Midgar and it makes me very interested to see what the Remake does with Vincent. Honestly, the section in Hojo's lab felt like it was ripped straight out of Aliens (soundtrack and imagery both).
Speaking of potentially revamped characters being made more interesting, it seems that Midgar and Wutai are only observing a ceasefire in hostilities. Shinra goes out of their way in this Remake to tie AVALANCHE to Wutai in order to get the public riled up and keen for another war with Wutai. This is revealed to be partially why they destroyed their own reactors and dropped the plate, to instill such a degree of terror in the populace that they would go with it. I get the feeling Yuffie is going to be a lot more fleshed out as will the Wutai story.
The Remake also lays the groundwork very nicely for Reeve's motivation in joining Cloud's party as Cait Sith. He clearly does not approve of Shinra's overzealous actions and is distraught when the Sector Seven plate falls. Keep an eye out in the cut scene and you'll see Cait Sith!
No, that is not actually Sephiroth you're fighting at the end of this first part. That is Jenova using the guise of Sephiroth, exactly the same as it was in the original. It spells it out for the player. You go into Hojo's "Drum" lab and find Jenova in the observation tank, when you leave the lab Jenova has broken out and 'Sephiroth' kills President Shinra. Jenova knows that is what will get Cloud motivated to seek him out and inevitably bring the Black Materia to him. Seeing just some of Jenova's illusionary powers at this stage setups up events nicely, they seemed to come out of nowhere in the original.
About some of the 'convoluted' fears. I don't think there will be dimension-hopping like some seem to be freaking out over. The scene right at the end showing Zack surviving the Shinra onslaught at the end of Crisis Core is from another timeline but not the one we're going through. Here, Zack wins, picks Cloud up and continues on to Midgar only for the Whispers to destroy Midgar as soon as he does. This obviously did not happen in the story so far as we've seen it, it just shows how far they will go to ensure things play out how they're meant to. There's also no way Cloud would have Zack's Buster Sword if he were still alive.

I gotta say, my expectations for the music were not very high because the original set such a high bar (IMO). I've heard a lot of modernized covers of FFVII music over the years and a vast majority of them simply don't live up to the original. That being said, I've spent the past hour listening to the music included in the Mini Soundtrack from the Deluxe Edition and I am quite impressed with what I've heard so far. Not all of the tracks are better (there are a few songs where I'm questioning the instrument choices), but overall it's a really solid soundtrack.

Yeah, well the soundtrack was probably the second thing I was looking forward too with the remake.
I do really appreciate how faithful a lot of the new arrangements are, Distant worlds in London last year did a lot of FF7 tracks too you should look up if you haven't already.

Distant Worlds has some pretty good stuff. They're kind of in the same boat where I don't always agree with their instrument choices (why anyone would use horns instead of a flute for Terra's Theme is beyond me).
I have one major grievance with the Remake soundtrack now, though. That Crazy Motorcycle remaster (Law Down Some Rubber) is just bad, and I'm not crazy about the Honeybee Inn song either (Stand Up). Oh well, I can always take those off the playlist....

Speaking of the OST, perhaps the best boss theme in the game was the Jenova one.

Always loved the Jenova music. I still would give the edge to the OG track on that, though the Black Mages did a really good job with their cover:

I'm wondering how Square-Enix will go about the subsequent parts of the project as far as progression goes. By the end of this first part you're likely going to have most of, if not all your materia to master and be around Lv.40'ish without power leveling. Either things are going to scale even higher, way higher than they did in the original, or they're going to have to do something about it. They can't have all our materia be reset and our progression forcibly reverted, I think that'd honestly piss off a lot of players.
I think they're going to go one of two ways. The first is what was seen in the .HACK game series which was an episodic game series consisting of four parts. When you finished an episode it created a 'data flag' where all character progression was transferred to the next episode. The trade-off was that enemies stopping giving EXP once you hit a certain level. The same thing happened in Mass Effect as well.
The other is what can be done in Witcher 3 where you can go through the entire game before tackling the additional storylines and bring all your progression when you start them. If you didn't go through the main storyline beforehand then you could start at a pre-determined state of progression suitable for starting the content.

Yeah, and it gets all the more convoluted when you consider the implications of any kind of Gold Saucer date point system if it's supposed to work like it does in the original, because having New Game + options as well as a chapter select kinda screws that over. My guess is that it will be wholly dependent on choices made in Part 2 even though there are obvious scenes in Part 1 where you choose between Aerith and Tifa.

Like how .hack did it. You loaded a specific file, even if you have multiple save states, when you transferred over info.

Could be, but the chapter select situation is still iffy because you can go back and make different decisions. Maybe it just takes the last iteration that you chose? I dunno. Either way, I imagine that the point system wouldn't be too influential in Part 1 just so that people can get every possible date in Part 2 by playing around in that one's chapter select (there will probably be an achievement associated with it).
