I personally feel J.J. did a good job with the latest Star Trek movies. I'm sure he understands the scrutiny and overwhelming responsibility that rests on his shoulders with Episode 7 (actually the entire new trilogy). If any director can pull it off, he can.
That being said, the expectations of fans will be so high that even if the movie does well, people still may consider it a failure just on general principle.

I liked JJ's first Star Trek movie, and I enjoyed the second one up until the Wrath-of-Khan Spock/Kirk role-reversal scene, but it just got stupid from then onward.
I just hope he makes Star Wars 7+ true to the original trilogy, and I especially hope he doesn't delve into "what if" territory.

It was stupid of them to do a whole "alternate universe" storyline to try to milk more money from the series/brand.
Any ideas what the story is going to be about? 30 years after Return of the Jedi puts it about the time Jacen and Jaina Solo were having their little adventures (never went beyond "Specter of the Past" storyline though).

J.J. is Clearly a better fit for Star Wars than Star Trek. Trek is seated closer to the Believable realm of true Science Fiction, where as Star Wars is more about Spectacle as a Fantasy in space.
If Abrams can make the Star Wars films of the same production and performance levels of his Star Trek Films, they're sure to at least stand with the Original Trilogy, of which I only believe 2 were actually good. (Empire and New Hope, Jedi is just meh)

I still don't recall the official source, but they said it would be an original story. If they followed EU, or any of it - around that period of time... It is placed five years after the Yuuzhan Vong War(War was 25-29 ABY)Episode 7's placement is 34 ABY. This would coincide with Jacen Solo's fall to the dark side.
Oddly enough, with Mayhew being cast again - Chewbacca's death was 25 ABY - but this is all EU, not real canon.

Wasn't it official that EpVII was completely erasing the Expanded Universe crap?
People already raging that the EU is going to be tossed aside for this movie making all those purchases/reads pointless because they aren't canon and are now invalidated by the new entries.

Darth Bane's Rule of Two
Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Chiss
Yuuzhan Vong War
Lost Tribe of the Sith
Jacen, Jaina, and Allana Solo. Ben Skywalker has been one of the best characters' stories IMO.
To say it's crap is just silly.

I think Episode 7 will break box-office records on tickets sold. It has high potential to be Disney's biggest cash cow, and I'm sure when they purchased the rights from Lucas, they had a long-term vision for it (or at least what they think they'd like to see happen with it).
That being said, I doubt there's going to be middle ground here. Either the new movie is going to knock the ball out of the park and totally rock, or it's going to earn Disney the infamous reputation of being the studio to single-handedly ruin 37 years of cinematic history.

They've already tried the genre with John Carter, and we all know how that went. I think Disney is excited because unlike John Carter, Star Wars is already very well established, and everyone loves Star Wars, so how could they go wrong? They have a prize Stallion on their hands, or so they think.
