Yea, it sucks. Second one I've had stolen in under a year (last one got stolen in October.) Both locks were cut. (worst part is there were unlocked bikes at the same bike rack as mine this time around)

All I can say is use a Krytonite tempered steel chain next time... Weights like 4+ kilograms, but if you always commute to the same place just leave the chain there... and keep it (the bike) inside when you go back home.

I leave my 1000$+ Opus touring bike near work downtown and it's been doing fine ever since.

Is the chain TOTALY unbreakable? Probably not, but it would be so ridiculously difficult to break that for 1000$ no one is going to bother.

As for the wheels, make sure not to use uselessly expensive ones if it's just a commuting bike... and use Pinhead locks. Sure it costs at first but then you get to keep your bicycle... and even more important you get to stop worrying and keep it as simple as possible once you're set up.

Remember that no matter how you lock your bike, someone who really wants it badly will take it appart piece by piece. But with a tempered steel chain, you keep the frame. From there, unless it's a 5000$ bicycle with super expensive shifters, wheels or other components, it is kind of pointless. People WILL give up on trying to steal yours.\

Last but not least, get some insurance. Most Kryptonit locks come with insurance already. But your home insurance might cover it with a deductible without you even realizing. Check it out.

They give you three keys with it and you can order more. Anything with a combination is 10X less safe and much easier to break into. They have a lot of different models, mostly U locks but I personally prefer the chain. It's as close as it gets to being unbreakable.

Will say from vast experience and training doing penetration tests both on a network and physical buildings, they are correct :) U-locks which utilize a round key (as opposed to a flat key) are much harder to break into. With a cheap set of lock-picks I can get through almost any padlock which uses a straight key lock, or a number combination, in under 20 minutes. Something like this (MasterLock#175 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCz3_ladHNM ) I can break in a few seconds thanks to a little latch on the inside which releases the lock if you press it hard enough.

Unless they have a proper cutting tool they aren't going to get through that chain very easily but then again, you can't protect from everyone. If they want it, they'll get it. Just avoid the simple combo-locks with 4 digits or less. The round padlock like a highschool locker are also very easy to break off. Generally a hammer will pop it off in a few whacks.

That dude with the 10000000 bikes in his backyard that looks like Mac from Tysons Punchout!, probably can break your lock just by looking at it.

The lock that comes with the higher end Kryptonite tempered steel chains is actually a U-Lock, a small and robust one with 4 compartments inside so that even with acid it's a pain to open.

Keep the receipt, take a picture of your bike. This is for legal purposes. And see if you can place a non-obvious identification mark on it.

Should this happen again, and you see your bike either being sold online, or from a pawn shop - you will have certain rights over this property.

May have to contact a legal officer once it is identified. But depending on the price of the bike - I have seen some bikes range from $60, to $5,000. And this could violate not only state, but federal laws as well if the person is identified and caught. (not saying you would get a bike worth that much...)

But legally speaking do the above now, and store the info. It is even possible that you can get insurance on your bike.

Since you said someone in your situation this is like having your car stolen... you can get coverage to cover your bike should it get stolen... Yes you can get insurance from $2-$30 a month.

Something to think about.

Renter's insurance does as well, and is insanely cheap.

May prevent further stolen bikes, however, may also have your bike confiscated.
