Update: http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/dismay-after-indonesian-atheist-charged-with-blasphemy/492622

For the record the term "imaginary friend" or "sky daddy" isn't ever going to cause good things, so why be condescending?

I don't think he is an idiot for being an atheist. I don't think he is an idiot period. I think he should have considered his personal situation and location and taken a different approach to speaking out in a public manner where people who will go beyond your typical persecution and into outright physical and apparently legal attacks can see it.

Sometimes, outright taking a stand is not the best course of action. I believe this will only lead to further repression and oppression, because it serves as scare tactics against other Indonesian atheists.
You're still trying to skate around my original point.. ALL OF THAT, is still what those who in the civil right movement faced.. They stood up. It would be a very different world if they hadn't. You can try the typical religious dodging the issue and what not, but it won't work here.. What he's done and is facing is exactly the same thing they faced, except now it takes far fewer people to actually 'get the word out' and their words can reach much greater distances, and far more rapidly.

If NO ONE took a stand, then we'd still have segregation.. If no one stood up and said "this isn't right", nothing would have changed. You think the the fire hoses and dogs and everything else they faced didn't act as scare tactics?

I think when there is at least one person standing beside you willing to take the abuse that you have the beginning of a movement. I think when you have one person that no one is openly defending (as in not denouncing it anonymously over the internet) then you have a tragedy soon to be forgotten.

I have a new one for you.. When you're not willing to take the fall alone, you lack the conviction to really defend your stance. As sad as it is, even if this is forgotten by the media and most everyone, it still has the potential to resonate with people. SOMEONE has to take that first step, if no one steps up, nothing changes.

For all you know, someone is waiting for someone else to step up.. Taking that first step, is the hardest.. You might be alone, you might have a million people at your back ready to defend you, you just don't know. But someone has to..

Does it really matter what he said? Are you seriously trying to rationalize laws that can detain someone for voicing their opinion on subjective matters?

Stop assuming you know everyone's motives.

Let me ask you something? While you are making these assumptions of me, what have you done about this article? I have already submitted it as a news tip to CNN and MSNBC.

I am allowed curiosity.

So happy I live in Norway.

No proper religion is the norm here.
While lots of people think there is a higher spirit, most members of the church actually are'nt christian.
I think like 80% of the country is listed as christian by the church, but when they do surveys, between 30 and 70% turn up as atheists.
The only people making a mess here are a few crazy religious people raging on homosexuals.

That someone gets arrested for saying there is no god, is just beyond me...
And now he have to PICK a religion? It's not like he'll actually belive in the one he have to pick >_>
He just have to do it to have a religion on paper?
That's simply HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE.

I don't understand how you can have 80% of people defining themselves as Christian while having a 30 to 70% response of atheism?

It's hard to actually leave the church, lots of paperwork, so most people just dont bother.

And that means what to an American? We have 1,000s of churches, of many different religions, and many sects within the same religion and we don't require paperwork to join or leave. We don't have a census taken of who belongs to what. Like I know what that means. You only have one church?

Less likely, but I can't say that for sure.

I think this is what it means by "depends on where you live". Islamic organization in this country always be the first antagonizing something that is irrelevant with their view. From the first publication of playboy magazine to taking Japanese AV actresses to play in a movie that isn't porn.

I think there's yet a case where one should be responsible of their conviction as it was written in their citizenship card.

Well while you are trying to know everything, let me know how to calculate brake specific fuel consumption for a 99 Eclipse with a 2.0 running a E316G turbo.

I'll continue to speak with the other Norwegian who was able to understand that the way your country runs things isn't how my country runs things and explained how such a statistic was possible, since we only have a governmental census and not a church one as well.
