Judging by some of the people going to 'heaven' I'll be glad to bask in the lava pits of hell.

I wish we did this to people who didn't believe in Santa. It would make the buildup to Christmas much more Christmas-y but the actual day much more disappointing.

At least religion avoids the second half by putting all your rewards after death. That was a masterstroke, btw.

Hey, its another act of religious violence and one caused by a facebook post at that. Oh dogma, you bring out the worst in humanity.

I'd say I'm not surprised but that's a religious majority country for you. Blasphemy, Sorcery, Beheading women, public lashing, public executions and denial of education are the norm.

I'm a huuuuuge proponent of free speech, but that doesn't mean it's always smart to publicly state whatever is on your mind. The people who have wronged this man over what he said are undoubtedly and unequivocally in the wrong for their actions. At the same time what he did had all the well reasoned forethought of going into Harlem with a big sign that says "Lincoln Never Should Have Freed the Slaves." What did he expect would happen here?
Same thing could have been said about those who had fire hoses and dogs sicked on them during the civil rights movement.. Some of those who were watching the news who were also sympathetic probably thought the same thing "idiots, they're just asking for trouble".. If you just stand by and stay out of public eye, nothing changes. For anything to change, requires those brave enough to step up, take the spotlight and make a plea for their cause.

If people hadn't stood up and taken the ***, we'd probably still have white and black bathrooms.

Still need to be aware of where you live. In the US this comment might get you a snide remark by a passerby or a supposed friend, maybe some hateful spew.

In other parts of the world it gets you killed, unless you are marching en masse for a movement, you are just signing your own obituary.

I'm not advocating for the continuance of this oppression, but I am advocating for some discretion and common sense.

You clearly missed the point in your hateful rage against religion.

I don't think that a company should be able to fire me for what I post on Facebook, but they can, so I don't post it on Facebook, or publicly, especially when anyone who felt like identifying me for whatever pissy reason they are in, just to get me in trouble.

Dead people can't continue to fight for their cause.

In a country where you know this persecution takes place, and you know has such a large majority of people that WON'T support you, you are basically bending yourself over and inserting your own fist by doing it this way.

I feel bad that he has to deal with this, but I question what he expected to happen?

Again, the same thing could be said about the civil rights movement..

Face it, this guy is fighting oppression just like those involved in the civil rights movement did.. Yes he should have expected back lash, maybe even death, but at the same time, he shouldn't be chastised or told "you shoulda known better".. He stood up for what he believes in.. One person makes the difference.. You think the civil rights movement just happened and all of the sudden one day 100,000 people were marching for the cause? No.. At some point (actually more accurately, multiple points) someone stood up and said 'enough is enough, this is my line in the sand, will anyone else join me?'.. No this won't change anything over night, but neither did the first person to stand up against the oppression of African Americans.. That struggle went on for years, pretty much an entire century.. And that's just starting from when the slaves were finally freed..

A ripple turns into a wave. Someone at some point has to stand up, and put faith in the fact that others will join.

Unfortunately, I think you are overly optimistic on the outcome this will have. It hasn't even touched the international news community, and may never do it. There were a lot more people in the US willing to take up the civil rights cause, I feel like this guy will be forced to choose a religion, serve his sentence and this country will not make one iota of progress from it.

I think you're just underplaying what he's doing because you're religious and don't agree with his stance.

Say I drop you off in the middle east with no hope of ever leaving.. Are you going to just conform to Muslim?

I don't agree with his stance? Do you even know his stance? You only know he is atheist, his stance could be survival. We don't even know if he is sticking to his principles at this point, is he refusing to recant? Is he willing to serve the full 5 years and not list a religion?

You don't have a case for what this event is going to do, because you don't even have the facts behind the story and where it stands right now.

You are so blinded by thinking all religious people are opposed to a person's right to not believe. Today, on my Facebook, I have talked to an ex-girlfriend and current friend who is Wiccan. I have helped a fellow DSM community member trace a wiring issue in his car, he happens to be a very outspoken atheist in the political/religion forums of that community.

I can't downplay something that isn't even known or defined.

As for your question, I don't know what I would do. I do know that no matter what I do, it wouldn't be saying Allah is a myth haphazardly on Facebook.

Okay. You seem to be confusing stance and conviction.. Conviction is what would keep him from taking back what he said and conforming, or worrying about his survival.. Conviction is what makes people stick to their stance even in the worst circumstances.. Conviction is what keeps people who are about to be executed during the crusades from professing they were wrong and they accept Jesus Christ and the Christian God as their lord.

His stance is quite obvious.. Whether his conviction leads to him holding on is yet to be seen..

Next, I am not the one blinded.. ~Insert .jpg of agnostic calling both aetheist and theist stupid~ My position allows me to see things from both sides and all angles, and to accept new ones.. To me, God (or the possibility of one) might as well be particle physics or quantum theory. Anything and everything is permitted.. I firmly believe that any God capable of creating the Universe(s) is well beyond anything the human mind could ever fully comprehend.. Which means, no one, not you, not me, not the Pope, not even the person who wrote Genesis could really ever understand him/her/it. To be honest, to think us simple humans could understand something that powerful is just absurd to me. It's beyond our plane of understanding to me.

Lastly, you don't have to know something intimately to downplay it. Religious people (not all, so those of you watching if this doesn't apply to you, then don't apply it) tend to be like attack dogs.. It's been that way for centuries.. They don't need to understand or know something before they attack it.. They see a threat to their belief, it doesn't even have to be the same religion, "I don't believe in God" doesn't really matter what language it's said in, religious people just attack it.. YOU become so blinded by the rage you don't even know why you're truly fighting it.. You just know they're fighting what you believe in, and that can't be allowed. It must be stopped..

You know where that train of thought lead? The inquisition, the crusades and a lot of other 'wars'... The Romans even fought over it..

Oh I forgot to address the part where you evaded the question totally..

So here it is, you don't know what you'd do.. But I guarantee it wouldn't be conforming, because you have your belief.. Say you were caught practicing Christianity, should we then chastise you for being an idiot? No.. You chose your belief, just as he has chosen his.

I don't think he is an idiot for being an atheist. I don't think he is an idiot period. I think he should have considered his personal situation and location and taken a different approach to speaking out in a public manner where people who will go beyond your typical persecution and into outright physical and apparently legal attacks can see it.

Sometimes, outright taking a stand is not the best course of action. I believe this will only lead to further repression and oppression, because it serves as scare tactics against other Indonesian atheists.

Allah? He said god in general I believe. While Allah is the Arabic form of God and used in the Arabic translations of the bible. Many Jewish and Muslims say this in referring to their god. Though they initially believed in the same god at one point till the Muslim prophet Mohammed was upset he wasn't chosen as the next religious leader. Thus breaking off into his own religion and what it is today.

I digress... while it does translate into God... the way they use it is not the same. It refers more to the "The Only God" meaning their god. *quick history lesson for ya*
