Stealing an item is supposed to take priority over stealing a buff... But then again I haven't played with it too much lately.

Well for what's it worth, an old definition of the word bully is, "Someone hired to commit violent acts."

That's true, but I suppose the definition has waned over the past 6 decades or so to something a little more like this, which I still can't see thief living up to.

I think SE's choice of the English term "Bully" is supposed to evoke someone who steals your lunch/milk money and you therefore avoid on the playground (you're "intimidated" by him/her). I guess the term "shakedown" wasn't a good fit >.>.

You're right. It is fitting in certain aspects of someone that takes your things and would cause harm. But it just doesn't seem conducive to the playstyle or damaging aspect that thief thrives in, which is indirect, deceptive, stealth like attacks.
Though I suppose there's no reason THF can't have multiple aspects to their repertoire, after all they're great for taking on things by themselves, and Bully in that respect would be perfect.
But in a party sense... not so much. We'll see. I'm still on the fence over this ability.

It roughly fits into the evasive solo type style though. Iirc intimidate can only proc when a mob is targeting you, so it will really never have any chance to bully in a group anyway.

THF evasion tank is not uncommon in abbyssea.

If you're evasion tanking as thf you aren't THing as well as you could and not using your all your hate control abilities to their full potential(trick attack) :(

They should really make new steal abilities. A steal move that takes a random move from the mob for 30 seconds (So they can't use it, not so you can use it). on a 2 minute timer or something. Being able to steal STR, DEX, AGI, etc wouldn't be too bad either if it was potent enough.
Yeah that would be good, I think it would be cool also if thief could steal special items that can be used vs the NM. Like being able to steal an item that locks a ws like you said or you can use to mix with ingredients and make a grenade or something lol, like rikku in FFX.

NO.

Semi related, but in FFX-2 (in before ewww ffx-2) THF dressphere had an ability called borrowed time which inflicted stop on an enemy. Guess "bully" is the FFXI version of that since both have you inhibiting the mob's movements.

An update on Bully for THF was released today:

09-02-2011 02:20 PM
[source]
Bayohne
Community Rep

The recast time for Bully has been reduced from 5 minutes to 3 minutes, and while active, the effects of Treasure Hunter are more likely to increase. (However, the probability of the opponent being intimidated is lowered in correlation to the number of players involved in the battle.)

The updated data is now reflected on the Test Server, so please give it a shot.

Close, I was wondering if you had a pluto's staff
and if you haven't gone on it before, probably don't wanna go through the trouble of setting it up huh :|
you gotta d/l like 4 gbs of crap and then extract it and then move it over to SE's test server file, and then you need to make sure your application got accepted :<

I was gunna see how much fun I could have with Klaustra ._.
Already figured out my max haste value I can get for Embrava atm

For people not up to speed with the Official Forums.

It seems bully may be (unconfirmed) getting the added effect of allowing you to use Sneak Attack from any direction.

Right now all we have is a JP post and a rough translation (like always?) but it seems promising.

I'd wait for the true translation until we draw any big conclusions, as there might be stipulations we can't really understand.

Well, Its on a 3 Minute timer, And only lasts 30 seconds, In reality its 2SA per 3minutes if you time it well. So not too lazified, I think.

perhaps.

Anyway, I was thinking of it being more positive in solo play where you can't normally use SA. It adds something positive to the ability I didn't expect.
