I will admit Rugby is alot more brutal in nature but American Football was pretty rough back in the early 1900s. In fact it was almost banned due to nearly 100 accumulated deaths directly or indirectly caused by playing the sport. If it weren't for Teddy Roosevelt mandating a revision and adding some rules it woulda been gone forever.
