That's way too simplistic though. It's an extremely tactical and intricate game and that simplification doesn't do it justice. For every A that beats B and C, there's a C that can beat A if a condition x is met and B can break even if a condition y is met, etc.

if its just 1 banshee vs 5 siege tanks. those siege tanks can last a while to do significant damage. whereas 5+ banshees vs a couple of tanks. yeah easy win for banshees.
A good test to see what unit compositions are good in just a flat out fight is playing the custom game: Desert Strike. All I know is from that is... mass immortal + colossai + anti air beat everything

Infestors are SO GOOD omg. I don't know why more Zergs don't use them. I am very grateful that they don't. I'd go as far as saying they're possibly the game's best unit atm.

I mass infestor in 4v4s for fun. its amazing especially when the enemy has no detector units >:D

Well placed Fungals > life! And Neural Parasite for some annoying units. Hilarious when you do it to Motherships, on the rare occasion you see them.

I'll admit I'm not giving it enough credit.
But frankly, I like Starcraft 1 a lot more. It did everything 2 did, only much tighter. That's probably because Blizzard was humble back then, and not up-its-own-*** with success.
I suck at SC2, but I like playing it, my most played race is Protoss, though I like to play all the races, I suck the most as Terran I think. :D

How hard would it be for me to pick up Starcraft 2 and play it casually? Is there a decent casual market? Would I get demolished by ridiculously good people joining the lower games to pump up wins?

the game sorts people into brackets based on skill in 5 qualifier games, but saying that I suck so much I'm in the lowest bracket and still lose most games:D

You can play the campaign to get into it, after that you can just start laddering. As far as I know you can only get demolished if good players do their placement matches.
There's 50 "tryout" games if you want, the best way to improve is just play games and polish your skills. Of course you need to know some standard things if you want to be competitive, like some timings. Need to know what tech you're getting etc etc.
Looking at your FFXIAH profile I can see you're... dedicated. SC2 shouldn't be a problem for you.

One of the best things about SC2 is that you don't have to play in the pvp ladders. There are many many different custom games that you can play instead and enjoy.

Ha ya I do get pretty into things.. But was hoping SC2 could be a nice diversion that didn't take as much time as FFXI does for me.
SC2 has a harsh learning curve. After you get over it (which depends how much you adapt/how much natural skill you have etc) it's pretty easy for awhile.

It could be. When you break down things, starcraft is really simple. It's just the different possible combinations that make it more complicated at times. :D
It worked fine for Taruzard and me, we'd just do random games whenever we were bored.(not so much since he mothership rushed me -_-)
But ya, it's a bit difficult to explain. You can be as casual as you want to be, but if you want to try and get better you'll have to throw your playstyle out of the window.
Oh, should mention that higher level players unless they buy a new copy of SC2 can't deliberately play lower level players to get easy wins.

It's all learning units which can be done easily with a couple campaigns and then just honing reflexes and learning to micro-manage units.
When you're new, you tend to focus on the battles a little too much, where a seasoned player will be creating the reinforcements for the units in battle, while micromanaging the battle at hand as best as they can. It all will eventually come down to keeping a level head and honing your timing. It's nowhere near as bad as it sounds if you cut through the nerd-jargon and acronyms and just play.

Starcraft and Starcraft 2 is like the Soccer of the video game industry...If you get really good at it you can win moneys.
Except Soccer(FOOTBALL) sucks. I cant stand it, especially with all those guys that get tapped on the back and fall down as if someone just punched them around the face.
