That's why I always buy the FFs when they come out, they have cool artwork on the discs. Platinum discs are just shitty silver discs.
FFIX's final character designs were done by Toshiyuki Itahana, not Yoshitaka. Promotional artwork may have been done by Yoshitaka, as all FF's have had promotional artwork done by Yoshitaka, ala FFXI's logo, he was not the presiding authority over the designs, thereby negating the difference between Garnet in Yoshitaka's promotional work and the game itself. You may perceive a pattern, but two does not make a perceivable pattern, and more so, there are proofs that show it less than a coincidence.

If you can't differentiate between FF7 Cloud and Tactics Cloud for instance, I think you're being awfully stubborn. Tactics Cloud is in there for a cameo appearance; there is no pretence of maintaining canon.

Anyways, I think it's pretty common knowledge that games that have zero storyline and only bring characters together for the sake of smacking the crap out of each other are not exactly the best places to search for 'canon' material.
Final Fantasy is one of those series that just jams in as many cool ideas from other media as possible with no regard to coherency. Canon is probably the last thing on their mind.
It's better to leave things up to interpretation anyways, that only means you can milk out even more spin-offs.
Look at FFXI itself. Everything past Chains of Promathia are outside the original design documents. Wings of the Goddess was just an opportunity to finally use all that fluff they wrote up for the Tribunes.
