I am very torn on if I should throw a week's worth of time into a guide for all new players. I dread the idea, but the real problem is the game will change even now. So if I figure out what the hell to tell everyone about in the shortest manner (not possible :P) it still be a project I watch and update. I am not sure I want to make another guide even if this one is actually needed this time.

Maybe I can take a glance at the returning to vanadiel section of BGwiki that is a couple or so years out of date and start working. I know there is a lot for returning players to grasp with. I suppose I need to see where the best way to ease people in is. Certainly if I can get that page good then every single thread people make can simply be a url'd "yes it is worth it" to that page.
I have, at a few points, thought of putting together a few guides, such as a "Tour of Adoulin" guide to help people navigate those areas. I've also tinkered with the idea of new maps like those really handy Abyssea maps. As far as returning gear/content progression, maybe you'd wanna reference that list I made a while back:

IMO, most job threads don't do a very good job at identifying 'mid-tier' (or perhaps I should say "easy accessibility") gear. Beginner and top level are good. When I look at something top tier and go "There's no way I can get that anytime soon", there aren't always alternatives given (or if they are, they're not necessarily any easier to get). There's a terrible assumption in some of them that if you're gearing the job, you're going straight for the top.

I agree with this so much. I like to know what my options are if I can't get the "top tier" stuff yet.
When I think of mid tier I think "just use whatever 50% cure potency you can get your hands on, and af3+2 body and hands. And swap to full wayfarer for idle/surviviability"

And slowly build a top tier set etc. That's why I didn't get into a lot of details. At that mid tier level the details don't mean much since it's not like you will be soloing or low manning extreme content in that stuff etc
Ok, here is a good example. The WHM thread only has one idle set. No set that I've found skimming through the front page again real quick mentions Wayfarer at all. So before now, I had no idea it was useful for an idle set. That's even after taking the time to manually go through gear with 'refresh' on it in the item set to build my own idea of a mid-tier set (which I didn't really finish). Of course, I also miss out on augmented gear this way since it doesn't show up. Not that I am likely to get the base item needed to augment in 75% of the cases at this point anyway. Now there's always the chance that Wayfarer is inferior to my current idle build, but I won't know that until I look at all the pieces in the set.

You are welcome. The BG Wiki thread is helping a lot at directing me to the most important areas of attention. I am working on all the key items to Reisen NMs as we speak.

As for the guides they are based on gear to use and certain mechanics or job information. Not on how to play the game.

My BLU guide on BG tries to bridge this gap because I saw this too. However, no one is going to write a damn thesis on a job for the other 21 jobs.

Maybe if I demand a black bar or something on AH then I can make it a matter of amusement for myself. :P
I'm not sure which guides you're mentioning. I was solely referring to the FFXIAH threads for each job. If there are some on BG Wiki or BG forum (which I haven't been to in a long time), I'll have to check them out. I know that BLU is probably the best job when it comes to the shear amount information that is available. I also know that it is enough to drive anyone crazy, so I'm not quite touching it yet.

What is personally missing to me is better guidelines to progress up the gear step ladder. WHM is probably one of the more straightforward jobs to gear (unless you're a DD WHM or really get into that .1% efficiency increase mentality), and it is still lacking.

Something like:
For curing, you need 50% cure potency (like Jos mentioned above) first and foremost. Here are 1-2 ways to hit that (which preferably won't require a full PT to acquire or even top tier trusts). Once you're there, here are pieces obtained via quest that will improve on this set (that you may not have been able to accomplish without getting the base set first). For example, the Homiliary piece for the Idle set. Then you should aim to complete the top tier set. However, if you are unable to obtain the items, here are alternative sets that should better prepare you for those (group) events.

I don't think that quite gets my point across still, but I haven't had time to sit down and make my own goal sets yet to provide better examples. Actually, I do have some old ones for my MNK alt that I can show. These were from the beginning of SoA, which is around when I quit.

[Edit to remove broken spoiler]
Chakra sets
ItemSet 244593ItemSet 319165ItemSet 319163

So, as you can see, the one is what I'm currently using, then I would find pieces of gear that I considered obtainable (solo, dual box, or low man), then the final set would be the optimal pieces (sometimes still not the 'dream' tier gear, but often would be).

I try not to be that person constantly asking for help, in game or on here, but ***I could use someone to hold my hand and tell me what to do sometimes.

I can't open that one either.

I was refering to my shitty BLU guide btw.
I can't open any on this page now. I can if I quote and preview. Strange.

I will take a look at that guide.

Only if you want to be a BLU :|

Bad guide is bad.
I was slowly gearing my BLU before I quit, and I plan on picking it back up if I stick with FFXI again for a while. Either way, I like reading through the guides just to learn more stuff about a job.

yeah wayfarer is an awesome starting place for idling and magical attacks. Huge boost to magic evasion means even with no buffs and nothing else on, pretty much anything below lvl 115 can never enfeeble you again. Plus solid and free MDB ftw.

it's many many jobs as well, not just the obvious ones. So even as a full relic gear 119 thief for example you get far more magic evasion and MDB from macroing in wayfarer instead lol.
The stat vomit on modern gear is so annoying. I like pieces being useful for more than one thing, but it's like 20 lines long.
