this has nothing to do with FFXI but i figured being a gaming community everyone for the most part is into getting a hand out or back-up copy of something you already own from the wonder-full world wide web. most forms are in P2P such as bitturrents and to do so you first need a search engine or source to get info on where the data is to download. ther "WAS" plenty of sites back in 2008 but as of the last 2 years the US government has been sueing out the a** to every search engine sight providing the info the torrents to peers and down loaders, and after each site gets sued they remove ALL links, (keep there sight running for god knows what reason. to leech the occasional click per link adds i guss) and the list of ones iv been using over years as of april 5th are all gone
first it was mininova.com, shortly fallowed by pirate bay, then as of april the 5th. isohunt, the 3 biggest giants of bittorent is dead. there are numerous other sites all filled with ad-ware/mal-ware and other nasty stuff and provide very.. very... few search results. if anybody knows of any remaining legends of decent working bittorent sites please freely post them.
--Disclamer--
this is by no means asking for help or providing help in the act of illegally downloading anything nore am i reasonable for trouble anybody gets into wile resorceing to sites provided. just mrealy asking for good torrent sights to find archived data for worst case scenarios such as a disk frag/crack/scratch beyond use, etc.

I live in the US and have no problems browsing isohunt, plus Demonoid's still around and tpb is still there, then there's always private specialized trackers, but gl with those :p

TPB has only been temporarily shut down a few times, it's still up and running and they have no plans of being 'bullied' into shutting down either. When one place outlaws the hosting of their servers, they move them, or something to that effect. Demonoid is still around, probably one of the best, since there's a good seeder/leecher ratio (I can get you a invite if you need one and the registrations are closed, just send me a PM, If I do get you an invite, just do me a favor and don't be a douche or something, cuz that can get me banned as well.)
Then there's sumotorrent, and you can also use torrentportal.com which has a list of a bunch of sites.
Incidentally, you should read some of the emails between them and places like microsoft and ea and ***like that, they can be pretty witty when they want to be lol..

You might want to stay away from Isohunt for the time being. As of the 5th they've had to reroute their site to Hong Kong to get around a proposed judicial order to filter and potentially turn over all their users' search results to copyright holders.
Incidentally, it's not the government that's suing. They have no vested interest. It's the copyright holders seeking redress through public courts under DMCA and others. Don't blame the government -- blame the folks like the RIAA who seem to think legally destroying the lives of their potential customers is a good strategy for profitability.

Well Blizard does, but yeah good luck on that being a universal feature adopted by companies, they make more money by forcing you to buy a new copy, since a lot of people don't know about torrenting ***.
EDIT: Most companies will even charge you to replace the discs if you call them up and have the proof you paid for it.
To OP there's something else you might want to look into, it does cost membership fees, but they're as low as 5 bucks a month or so.. Google NEWSGROUPS.

sadly money is a problem right now. in fact that's kinda what sparked this whole thing. going though my games to see what i can spend my free time on. being my unemployment is about to run out and sadly going to have to put FFXI on hold until i find a job or get another means of income. don't like having to spend more money on something i already bought too.

Just because the trackers that track supposedly illicit torrents are being sued offline does not mean that BitTorrent is a thing of the past. BitTorrent and BT-styled distribution systems are becoming more and more common, though you might not realize it.
For example, CNN.com's video client uses a BT-like system for the large-scale distribution of video feeds. If you watched Obama's inauguration on CNN.com you were downloading and uploading the stream in a P2P cloud.
As well, Blizzard uses BitTorrent to distribute updates and patches for WoW. Something that I desperately hope that S/E has picked up on for FFXIV, the updates for FFXI are fscking interminable. -_-'
somewhat off-topic, but Danz... for the sake of all spelling/grammar nazis on the internet: find the spell-check option in your browser and turn it on.

I've never been a frequent BitTorrent user, and I haven't used it in a couple years, but I always used this site because it searches a whole bunch of other torrent sites so I don't have to.

The biggest worry about BitTorrent at the moment is not that trackers or individual sites are getting sued. Like Sammitch said, that's basically a game of whack-a-mole and the technology has completely legit uses anyway.
What we should be worried about more is the major net neutrality ruling yesterday against the FCC, basically opening the door for ISPs to charge you for internet access by site or by protocol. Want Youtube? You need Tier II plan. Want BitTorrent? Sorry, that's Tier IV. Want to play MMO's? Ah, you need the Gamer Pack to hit those IPs. Similar to how they charge for channel packages on TV.

I honestly think that once they start attacking net neutrality we're going to see a real, live revolution.
Go to the right parts of the internet and you can see it brewing.

Yeah I'd love to say everyone would boycott it if it happened, but internet is nearly equal to oil now.. We 'have' to have it, and we'll pay whatever price they tell us we have to pay, or at least most people will... I'm sure there will be a few who refuse to, and a few will find ways around it, but mostly, people will just pay what they're told to pay and *** and moan about it, but accept it.
Tell me I'm wrong.

If they decide to go that route (and they are, that's why Comcast sued and won the ability to do so), "getting around it" will be about as easy as "getting around" television channel packages. There's nothing to "get around" if you need the service to try and get around the service to begin with.
It's a huge problem. Net neutrality is vitally important to how the internet works. Congress has a number of bills sitting in committee to enforce net neutrality and not allow ISPs to move to this limited access pricing structure, but so far Republicans are objecting, saying private companies should be allowed to do whatever they want without regulation.
