This is a very weird thread that, honestly, OP should be embarrassed to have created. Very telling, in 2026 we have people asking this question when information is at their fingertips.
Now I'm just going to say it
I think it's a personal vendetta issue with the fact that Gabe's a billionaire, and you're a liberal or something.
Why is Shishishishishishishsito picking on Gabe's yacht?
Mine is way better.

See what you started - BAD DOGGO.

I'm going with this theory.

More than everyone else having an irrational love of Gabe, you seem to have an irrational hatred of him. That's fine, no one is telling you how you should feel, but at the same time, you VASTLY overestimate how much we give a ***about how you feel. Why don't you go start a irrational love-hate relationship with the screw of gabe's brand new yacht?
How do you feel about that?
Dont worry, I will let you pick one of these girls. Nobody wants them cause their fannies look like this

Yeah - I didn't want to say hate or assume his political stance, but I've seen it before.
Don't want to delve into politics because people think that's an IQ test or something, but I do see the pattern of a certain group just assuming that billionaires are bad, shouldn't have that much wealth, and to amass that much money, you must've done so at the expense of others.

Politics factors in, but its more of a consumer problem. How many people are really willing to sacrifice something they enjoy (at least in part) to take a stand against something they don't?
Until large groups of people are willing to act together against something, you withholding your 12.95 means little and your complaints even less.
And trying to convince someone still getting value out of the thing you don't like to sacrifice their current enjoyment for an uncertain improvement sometime in the future is futile.
Something I have to learn anew every day.

How do you feel about that? Considering I didn't even know he had a yacht until you said he did, my level of give a ***about this is next to nil. Steam is a good platform for the most part, and I disregard pretty much everything else.

Clearly you've forgotten how this all started. PCGamer put out an article going "LOOK GABE BOUGHT A YACHT PEASANT, HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT GABE HAS A YACHT, LOOK AT HIS YACHT, HES RICH AND YOURE POOR PEASANT. YOU NEED TO HATE GABE FOR THIS." If you didn't read anything how did you arrive at your story about irrational feelings?

What Gabe used to be and what he is today are totally different things. People still like what he used to be.
The problem with being a billionaire is it isolates you from the rest of society, the constant sycophancy also changes how you view yourself. You start to believe the hype, that you're better than everyone else and normal people are animals or other similar words.
Effectively it turns you into a misanthrope.
The reason Gabe has a mega yacht in the first place, is during covid he thought society was going to collapse and the masses were going to turn into a rampaging horde of zombies (a lot of billionaires did the same, and fled). So he sold all his property and now lives on a mega yacht off the coast of New Zealand.
Personally, the reason I think these people should be taxed far more is to try stop them turning into a bunch of super villains as they currently do. If you were to hear the kinds of things these weirdos discuss as Davos, you would want all their money taken away from them. Money is a super power in 2026, and these kinds of nerds with weird ideas should not have as much power as they do.
Currently it's very much the case where billionaires > governments > you. When it should be governments > millionaires > you.
By Tarage 2026-05-13 07:17:01
Oh I am pretty far left when it comes to eating the rich. I just personally see quite a few people ahead in the line who need to be consumed first.

Gabe seems fine. Valve is a private company with a very peculiar (almost non-existent) management structure. Hence why they leave things half finished, don't work on things the public might like them too and everything else.
Their retention rate is very high, their engineers are very well paid and they get stock options for when/if Gabe decides to sell.
They also are *the* major driver behind Vulkan adoption which benefits the entire gaming industry, despite MS's attempts to kill it.
Should be happy companies like that even exist, not moaning that they make too much money for their owners. That just smacks of jealousy.

idk why anyone cares that he's a billionaire.
if you're upset because steam is an absolute garbage product from a usability and UI standpoint and that he's still a billionaire, that's justified.
even the riot games launcher is better than steam at this point and it has had a laughably bad client experience since the dawn of time.
steam is GARBAGE.
my guess is most of you play single player weeb games though which is probably why you don't know how terrible it is anytime you try to do multiplayer anything. you just click weeb game in the launcher that looks like it was made in 1992 and it goes. the way they handle game invites/chat/interactions with things like microsoft accounts(bungie games) etc. is so bad its actually a surprise that they are in business

I skimmed and saw that you were being an idiot so I decided to call you out on being an idiot. I guess it needs one to know one.
It's going to be interesting to see how they'll advance once the whole loot box gambling stuff gets regulated or banned in larger areas like the EU.
I assume the revenue is too attractive to drop completely but forcing ID on their customers would go against Valves philosophy.

Already happened in the UK with *adult* games. That ship has sailed.
By Shichishito 2026-05-13 09:25:34
Some countries already took measures, Denmark and I think also the Netherlands have their own regulations. I read New York also has a open case regarding loot boxes against valve.
I'm not sure though how they work in practice and whether the EU has more strict regulations in mind.
I noticed a push for more control and surveillance so I wouldn't be surprised if the EU ups it a notch.
How does it work in the UK? Do you need ID to access steam, games that contain loot boxes or just when you want to start opening loot boxes in a game?
Can you get around it with a VPN?

I do see the pattern of a certain group just assuming that billionaires are bad, shouldn't have that much wealth, and to amass that much money, you must've done so at the expense of others. OK, let's look at Bill Gates, one of the better billionaires.
Quote: billionaires are bad He was.
Quote: shouldn't have that much wealth He shouldn't.
Quote: to amass that much money, you must've done so at the expense of others He did.
Today he isn't squashing anyone like a bug to amass a monolopy, he is a philanthropist, he is working to end hunger and a few widespread diseases. Does this forgive the way he made his loot?
Oh I am pretty far left when it comes to eating the rich. I just personally see quite a few people ahead in the line who need to be consumed first. Yep. Elon before Bill but ALL OF THEM.
By Althor 2026-05-13 09:40:35
People could deny big corps money by not purchasing the product or funding it, but that requires sacrifice. Easy to get mad because it feels good but changes nothing.
By RadialArcana 2026-05-13 09:48:37
Bill Gates, one of the better billionaires.
No, he is literally one of the absolute worst. At least Gabe doesn't wanna mess around with society, he is one of the best cause he just uses his money to buy / research cool stuff.
That guy that threw a custard pie in his face could have done something awesome for the world, all those years ago.
What a missed opportunity.

You can play whack-a-mole as long as you like, another will always pop up. Big Tech has given the average nobody more knowledge and power than ever before in history, and yet we still collectively pin everything on the shoulders of a few individuals instead of doing something with it. Exceptions exist of course, but generally it's just the same thing from a thousand years ago.

Maybe 25 years ago he was, but he turned superheel since then, coinciding with Microsoft becoming Microslop.

You do not need id to access steam.
You need ID to buy adult games on steam. Technically steam require you to put in a credit card as a form of id rather than use *the not online Id service*.
However, vpns don't help. What triggers id requirement is your steam account country, which is defined when you create a steam account. Once created, even if you vpn to change your IP, the steam account's country cannot be changed.
If you want to avoid id requirements you'd have to vpn to a country that doesn't have it and create a new steam account there.
Different countries have different games available so it will affect what games you see and are able to play.
It's a politically driven mess.

Bill gave his wife an STD and then fed her drugs to treat it without her knowing it, and is a stinky globalist POS
Why the hard-on for Elon to be murdered first?

The problem with the world is that some nerd can make obscene amounts of money doing one thing he is very good at, making a company that makes graphics cards (or an operating system) for instance.
Then this nerd with very little life experience, empathy for others or common sense outside of his billion dollar bubble, and that knows next to nothing about much of anything except graphics cards, gets it into his mind that he actually should be telling all of humanity how things should be cause he read a book on something or saw a movie.
Then because he has obscene amouts of money, and almost everyone is a sellout to money that means he can fund/promote insanly crazy things and all of the rest of us have to put up with the consequences of it cause poltiicans are *** (often it's not even direct money now, but more a promised job when they leave office)
Power should be purely in the hands of governments, not some dood that made a lot of money doing one thing and then gets to influence everything because of it.
Who the heck is Bill Gates to be telling anyone anything outside of how to insall Windows? Yet money gives him that power, it's outrageous honestly that this wrinkly tech nerd has the power he does.

Look, I dunno *** all about the guy, but if nothing else, at least he didn’t turn Steam into dynamic pricing like Ticketshyster etc. imagine being like “Oh, you waited for a review of this and now it’s hot? Extra $39.99 fee. Aw shucks, buying it on a Friday? Big weekend plans? Idiot. That’s another $17.99.”

If you want to avoid id requirements you'd have to vpn to a country that doesn't have it and create a new steam account there. Sounds easy enough to circumvent for bored minors and people with a gambling addiction.
I think the varying entertainment offer depending on location is a big reason why house holds book VPNs in the first place so with those regulations I see VPNs only become more mainstream. It wouldn't surprise me if VPN lobbyists played a role to push in that direction.
Different countries have different games available so it will affect what games you see and are able to play. It could become a problem in the distant future when regulations on video game gambling become regionwide but currently I doubt it's a big hurdle.

The games community worships Steam because its a reliable consumer friendly simple product. That's a statement. Now it'd be nice to follow up with some reasons why steam is a worship worthy degree more consumer friendly than their competition.
You ninja introduced gg.deals into this conversation after I made that post. Don't get it twisted. Initially I mentioned gog and humble bundle, both occasionally have better prices than steam. Then you Nynja narrowed it down to new games only and started cherry picking titles.
I followed you on those new arbitrary rules instead of calling you out on your bullshit. I proceeded to demonstrate, with your list of cherry picked titles, that steam doesn't have the price advantage by default. Instead of acknowledging that you're changing the rules again.
Remember, You guys chose to argue in favor of steam and gabe being your one and only lord and saviour. My side of the argument is perfectly in line with choosing a different store if their offer is better. And for the 3rd time:
So are gog, humble bundle and others without charging that premium. The bold part clearly indicates that the list isn't comprehensive, stop selectively reading over things that don't fit your narrative.
Regardless, I've already covered this one too:
They sell you a steam key. I dont know the process how they get their stock but my guess is theyre resellers who bought in bulk at discount. Fact is that they sell them cheaper than steam does.
I'm just repeating stuff I've already said now. I noticed, like a broken record, pretending those quotes debunk arguments while most of them only talk past valid points like the one above.
I hope we can stop with the quote fest from here on out and advance the discussion cause it's going to suck having to cross reference a different thread even more than it already did in the original thread.
