I'm not going to post the email if Nalfey intended to keep it private. I'll confirm that I saw it and I do believe it was a real email. If he wants to post it himself, he can.

Bullet points:

• It was a reply to a GDPR request, not an unsolicited threat.

• It did state that 'further legal action' could be taken, but context made it seem like a generic statement rather than targeted.

• It also specifically stated the reason for ban was that Nalfey 'may have created or distributed' unauthorized software. It did not speak of use.

There's absolutely no reference to Github or request for takedown. My interpretation is that the statement about legal action was an artifact coming from generic communication. I found it very interesting that their documentation on the ban specifically said creating and distributing, rather than using. My interpretation would be that Nalfey was GMed for talking about making addons or telling others where to get them while ingame. Obviously, that's not the only possible interpretation.

Really, the biggest takeaway may be that GDPR allows banned europeans to get a little bit more info on their ban. Without more GDPR replies, it's hard to say if the language is always like that, but I'd be inclined to think it isn't. If the ban was for the use of tools, I would have expected it to say that. So, I'll admit that some of my assumptions from the last page were likely wrong. However, I do not think there was any legitimate legal threat made about the Github, nor do I think SE was even aware the Github existed.

I agree most of it is just generic template and is to protect the company, I worked a lot with GDPR when it was implemented years ago at my company.

I find it interesting with the wording of "may have created or distributed unauthorized software". What happened here and what I assume most has come to the conclusion is that Nalfey in some way pissed off someone to being massreported as I doubt SE has time or the resources to skim through Github/Gitlab all day since we'd seen lot of more of these types of situations.

Some of my assumptions were also wrong in this thread, as it still sounds so unbelievable.

Could also be they discussed their addons/tools in game to someone. Putting that stuff live on SE's ingame logs is a very bad idea. I remember someone (Selindrile maybe?) had a massive warning on their github for people to never contact them in game about addon questions.

I remember doing dyna with a friend a while back, and he posts in game "the bots ran in", live on the chat logs. I was not entertained.

It’s been a while since I was cribbing any code from here but I’m pretty sure it was Selendrile that went to the length of detecting if any users of his luas were sending him a /tell and doing a best effort detection of if the tell contained any references to 3rd party tools and blocking it.

I thought it was pretty hilarious but yeah, solid advice to keep anything out of game chat logs. I feel like people have become MUCH more complacent to this in recent years whereas back when you didn’t even mention windower ever in game. Now people openly talk about luas, react, whatever
