Is anyone else having issues logging into PoL/FFXI?

I am getting POL-0011 and POL-1160 errors when trying to check PoL version, subsequent attempts get past the PoL version check then crap out on verifying PoL id/pw or SE id/pw. Got all the way to character select screen and couldn't get past lobby notification step.

ISP: Verizon, I am in the north east USA region.

I've heard/seen people have similar intermittent issues with Canada/EU ISP's but never within the states to my knowledge.

I have nothing to contribute other than this happened to me like 3 times so far months apart and it's total garbage since there's nothing you can do. If you're already in-game you'll start getting crazy lag. Like "use an ability, r0 for 2-3 seconds, everything pops off" kinda lag constantly. And if you log out you won't be able to get back in as you've seen.

I'm in eastern canada, but one of my static group is in a different part of eastern canada further north and had no issues.

At this point I'm convinced there's a dying switch routing traffic in some random data center somewhere between here and Japan, and if your connection happens to get routed to it you're effed.

If it happens again, my plan was to try hotspotting my phone to see if that circumvents it.

I had this happen for an entire week. It just magically resolved itself yesterday. I am using my Visible hotspot, which is also Verizon.

Run a traceroutes to 202.67.54.132 (its an IP owned by SE) and see if anything hangs. I used to have connection issues when zoning or logging in, and as the hops made their way from my location westbound towards tokyo, they would hang between the cogentco hub in san jose and the one in tokyo.

I ran a traceroute from work and got the same result, since they wound up taking the same hops. Then I VPN'ed over to some public network just to test another traceroute and there were no dead hops because the route didnt go over contego.

If your issue is dead hops along the way outside of your network and ISP, theres really nothing you can do short of using a VPN to play FFXI. You can try to notify your ISP about the situation, but theres no guarantee they can do anything.

I had the other night what I call those micro lag or micro D/c, where every once in a while everything just R0. Had my entire party die on H then F because of it, it was all night and sucks when you the WHM and it’s kinda important. Glad to see other posting about it, so it’s just not only me.

I've been having the same issues as stated by the OP.
Started occuring in February and then dissapeared by early March.
But unfortunately reappeared again last week.

Getting trough the POL login procedure would sometimes take up to 5 to 8 minutes, if I wouldnt completely time out somewhere before that. And from what I heard ingame some of my fellow EU players are experiencing same problems.

Thanks to @nynja I know learned how to run a traceroute and found out the connection sometimes times out in the connecting IP addresses from my service provider before it bounces to the Contego side.

Does this have something to do with my ISP's firewall settings or my own? Or is SE using a different connection nowadays because this never happened before (been using this Laptop/router/ISP for 7 years)?

Had this yesterday and even after successful login was getting frequent R0s on multiple characters.

A full shutdown on all POL connections and re-login resolved it. If you're getting interrupts and POL-0011 on trying to login, the issues will persist after login.

It's almost always the same group of ISPs that have this problem, it happens once every year or so and lasts 1-3 days. It's a DNS issue, you can sometimes get around it using a VPN if you don't wanna wait.

DNS issues do not cause packet loss after you are connected.

You have no idea how DNS works.

dead hops

While it probably is a routing/peering issue, don't read too much into "dead hops" - traceroute typically uses icmp and you can simply configure devices not to respond to icmp.

You have no idea how DNS works.

Someone explained it years ago and I forget the intricacies of it, it's something to do with how the ISP find servers or something (i know dns converts a domain name to an IP). It's linked to the backbone infrastructure that different ISPs use to look up domain IP addresses.

Which is why it always happens with certain ISPs and not others and happens once every 1-2 years. Something updates on their end or Square does something and it's busted for a few days.

I used to have this issue once a year on my old ISP and only with XI (and verizon people had it at the same time) while most others had no problems at all, then I swapped 10 years ago or so and never had it again since.

Yeah, the dead hops probably just have ICMP firewalled. Telco routing does not use ICMP, there are other protocols to determine dead hops.

A flaky router will still respond on occasion though - some minor packet loss will not cause routing to it to stop.

If you are referring to BGP that does not use DNS at all. It routes via IP ranges.

I'm not reading all that. Thanks for the DNS explanation that is still irrelevant to this topic, I guess.

Same here, I usually get 150ms from my location to servers in Japan, now it's pretty much double, bad peering between my ISP and NTT.

Quote:
Tracing route to ffxi00.pol.com [124.150.154.122]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.88.1

3 5 ms 6 ms 6 ms 10.100.136.158
4 8 ms 5 ms 6 ms 10.100.34.78
5 89 ms 84 ms 89 ms 10.119.20.194
6 259 ms 268 ms 260 ms ae-43.a03.sngpsi07.sg.bb.gin.ntt.net [116.51.26.81]

16 258 ms 257 ms 257 ms 124.150.154.122

Trace complete.

Gameplay with 200~250ms+ MS results in terrible experience inside instances like Odyssey from what I remember.
