Did ff16 flop?

Regarding the 14 trailer that was just posted, it was posted without context. This is the first trailer for expansion to tease it, shown at the first of 3 fanfest. Each fanfest the trailer evolves and so does the music until it reaches its final form at the final Japanese Fanfest. Basically what you are listening to is an incomplete sample of the direction they plan for the expansion's main theme. this is certainly a take
It’s literally how it’s always been done lol. they always start out with horrible trailers with bad music and a "storyline" as bland as "big cold"?

went back and watched the expansion its basically copy/pasting (heavensward) this trailer is far better and this isn't even a very good trailer and its still about 500-600x better than the slop they just put out

keep coping though, im sure they are almost ready to release an AI catgirl e-girlfriend for you, that seems to be the thing most modern day ff14 players are concerned with.
the fact that the WoW one is nearly 20 years old and the heavensward one is 12 years old and they are still significantly better than the evercold trailer. yikes.
Diehard career haters say the darndest things :s. The whole point they were making was that the trailers are often incomplete till the final trailer, so it’s not exactly fair to pass judgement on them yet.

I like your comparison to CoP, but I also felt a lot of Final Fantasy 4 when I played 16. Maybe it's the return to medieval themes and no cars, TVs, or cup noodles.
Oh yeah, there are a lot of great comparisons between FFXVI and the medieval FFs, I really like the FFIV suggestion.
The main reason CoP stands out to me is because FFXVI takes SO MUCH from CoP that it's almost immersion-breaking.
- Plot structure centers on attacking the mothercrystals.
- Crystals being used in everyday life and is a commodity that holds too many secrets.
- Villainous race who share a consciousness and whose bodies are made of their god's fragments (Zilart -> Promathia, Ultima Collective -> Ultimalius)
- Strange, unaging nation leader who is secretly pulling the strings of war (Kam'lanaut and Barnabas)
- I could go on.
When comparing the two, it's hard not to feel that CoP did this type of story better. But I also think that Sato (CoP) is a better writer than Maehiro (FFXVI).

I felt these same similarities, but it really screamed FFVI at me too.
- Bearers showcase what the Thamasans feared. People with magical powers will be exploited and enslaved.
- Dominants are literally Espers akin to Terra w/ her Morph ability. Their power is even hereditary.
- There's two continents, similar to the WoB from FFVI.
- Dominants and beaerers alike eventually turn to stone. While they doon't turn into Magicite(in og JP it's Magic Rock), this is still what happens to Espers when they die in FFVI.
- Destroying the Mothercrystals/Ultima has the same effect as destroying Kefka and the Warring Triad in FFVI. i.e. Magic dies out in the world

Well my favorite Final Fantasy games are 6 > 4 > 16, so all this makes sense lol. I think I need to run through CoP again. I'm feeling a bit fuzzy on the details of that story since it's been so long.
I thought 16 was an absolute master piece of story telling. Gameplay wise, it's fine. It's not amazing, but it isn't bad. What I realized about 16's battle system is that it's not as fast paced as it may seem. You can stand around and do nothing for a pretty good amount of time before getting hit. If they allowed you to choose a menu system instead of button combos to execute moves, it would feel EXTREMELY close classic Final Fantasy battle system.

The title of the video literally says TEASER trailer.
Also, you're comparing WoW and Blizzard from Lich King era to FF14 Heavensward and SE. If you compare WoW: Twilight to FF14 Dawntrail (which was admittedly not the best expansion story-wise), it's a different story. Having played part of Dragonflight, played the "main campaign" of the War Within and the "end" of it, and current Midnight, I can say Midnight is very much MID. The worst of FF14's story currently (Dawntrail), still is loads better than Midnight's story.
WoW is currently like, a Saturday morning cartoon, with characterization to match. Even the trailer, is just teasing the intro stage of the friggin expansion. You emerge from the portal, fight some void-baddies, but Cobra Commander Xalatath turns the tables all according to her plan, corrupts the "Sunwell", and makes it a "Voidwell" or some ***, and you spend the expansion helping the blood elf city, finding out the "Light" is just a force that reacts to anyone willing to channel it, and can corrupt things like the shadow. The expansion added like 4 areas or so for 10 levels, makes leveling characters annoying past the first one you bring from 80 to 90. The story is a joke, and the latest patch story, you spend 10-15 minutes reuniting the long divided elven clans (Blood, Night, Void, etc.), who have spent the last few millennia hating each other. The rest of the alliance is sitting in town AFK, and the horde is nowhere to be found.
WoW the way it is now, forces you to skip most of the stories it has told in it's 20 year history. You do a tutorial, choose an expansion to start in, and when you reach like, 80 or so, it stops your leveling progress until you go to the current expansion. You don't have to finish the story, so you kinda lose any sense of what is going on, or reason to care about what is going on.
FF14 at least has you through the story in order, and the worst story (the current story) of FF14 is better than the current story of WoW. And raiding in WoW is still a gated garden, you get gatekept by people who want people past the content to join them, and you need a resume to progress to participate in ***, unless you have friends willing to bring you along.

I've been playing WoW and FFXIV extensively.
WoW never wanted to focus on the story but on the lore.
If anything, the success of FFXIV model changed A LOT of stuff in WoW, for the better I would say altough some old timers would disagree.
There are several differences in the approaches of the two titles, despite them being the 2 most similar MMORPGs still on the market using the same model (ironic, right?).
If I had to name one difference in particular among them all I would say that FFXIV when they develop things, they already have a long term plan in mind, when they introduce things or stuff they already know more or less what they're gonna do in the future and which role that thing they just added will have in 3+ years after one or two expansion.
WoW changed a lot (especially with the currently ongoing trilogy) but their model is still focused on the present. Each expansion is sort of a "game of its own", with its own systems, stuff, it's an "ecosystem" meant to be the focus of your gameplay experience when the Expansion is under the spotlight, and forgotten (or close to that) when a new one comes.
Through the years they did a lot of things to moderate this approach and change some things (borrowed power, timewalk etc) but overall what I said still stands pretty much true.

Stellar Blade sold 1m at launch, and was a huge success that the company was proud of and that helped promote them (it has since sold 6.5m). They are working on a sequel.
Pragmata has sold 2m so far and is a huge success that Capcom are proud of since it's created a new franchise.
FF16 sold 3m at launch and was a flop, split the fanbase, it embarrased the company and the man that made it (it has since sold an extra 500k, over the other platforms they released it on since word of mouth of the game is terrible). They have no idea at all what to do with ff17.
Numbers don't make a game successful, matching or exceeding expectations do.

I unno, the music and VAing were very good and the story was decent enough to match. I can see it being a lot of peoples favorites as an entry point to the series. A lot of the "flop" that people say there is came from the actual gameplay system, but overall everything else was good.
Edit: wanted to add that it did bring a lot of new people into the series. Anecdotally, having attended several KupoCons, a lot of people first FF these days were 16.

I think matusai should be the one to to lead ff17 he is entitled to have it, not only he worked in 11 for 20 years he was a director for crono trigger.
