It's actually a really interesting situation.

We've all got that pearl-clasping aunt or tough guy uncle (or we are that person in the case of some folks here, I'm sure) who say the things he's saying. The POTUS also has First Amendment rights.

But he also should have the wherewithal to understand that no one takes Aunt Janice to heart when she says that people should be fired for not being patriotic enough.

When the POTUS says it...it comes across as a bit more than a personal opinion. He's the Commander-in-Chief. If he and enough officials decide that not being patriotic enough is a domestic threat, bad things could happen. Deadly things.
