I definitely wanted Beiden to run.

Could you see a debate between say Beiden and Trump, both with no filter haha what a glorious moment that would be.

Starbucks also invaded our culture, I dont see any protest against that! Get that shitty coffee out of my gourmand culture.

You may not like Starbucks but millions of people do ! I've tried a lot of "organic" hippie coffee brewed with the sweat of Jerry Garcia. And to be honest it doesn't taste better to me than Starbucks.

Yeah, but I just drink tea like millions of people do. I don't like the taste of Starfucks, their trendy image, or their prices.

Dunkin Donuts has the best coffee imo!

This is about the European Union, thank you.
EU is a failed social experiment and it's finally showing.

It's great for economic benefits across the member states, and it should have been left at that. But there are no social benefits to be had by this experiment.
Thanks, that was my whole point.

France's Prime Minister says the hard-right Front National is risking a 'civil war'
Quote:
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls is warning that the rise of the nationalist and anti-immigration Front National in France could lead to “civil war” in the country.

The Front National topped regional elections held over the weekend, and although they should be kept out of power in most of the country due to the second round of elections, the FN has never controlled any regions at all before.

The regional authorities aren’t enormously important in themselves, but the election shows the party’s support swelling.

Leader Marine Le Pen leads in most polls for the first round of the 2017 French Presidential election, and FN support seems to have swelled in the aftermath of the brutal attacks on Paris in November.

According to Le Figaro, Valls said that the FN advocates division which could build to become a civil war. He also accused the party of fuelling fear and promoting racism and anti-semitism.

The Front National is one of the hard-right, anti-immigration and eurosceptic forces that has become considerably more popular in Europe over the last few years. The Italian Lega Nord, Sweden Democrats, True Finns, Danish People’s Party, Freedom Party of Austria and the Netherlands’ Party for Freedom are other examples of the phenomenon.

It’s still some time until France goes to the polls for a genuinely important national election, and Le Pen will be disadvantaged by the electoral system. The two rounds of the election mean that only the top two candidates go into the final round. Even if Le Pen managed to win in the first round, she would have to gain support from voters who picked the mainstream centre-right or centre-left parties initially.

In 2002, Jean Marie Le Pen (Marine’s father) did make it into the second round of the French Presidential election, but was absolutely smashed by Jacques Chirac, the mainstream centre-right candidate, who picked up more than 80% of the vote.

Currently, former President Nicolas Sarkozy has the best odds of winning, followed by Marine Le Pen, with Manuel Valls in third place. Current President Francois Hollande has reached record low popularity ratings during his tenure, and has odds of just 22/5.

Speaking as a Dutchy, I have to say I'm not too afraid that Geert Wilders and his "Party for Freedom" will climb to power in the Netherlands.
Even if they manage to become the largest party in the next elections.

There's no other political party that wants to work together with or even support them, and I doubt they'll ever get enough votes to become large enough to govern this country by themselves.

We'll see next year though, when we get to elect our next term's government in September.

I just can't wait until somebody (in power or trying to be in power) suggests that we round up all the Muslims in the nation into concentration internment camps for their protection.
It's been proposed in France. They want to put all those who are filed "S"(for suspicious I think)into internment camps even if they don't do anything. Preemptive prison.

We had the same like in holland a couple of years back. Our politcians and media decided to ignore an upcomming extreme right party although they were the biggest party in Antwerp. It only caused these politicians and voters from the ignored extremist party to spread out to other right wing parties which has shifted the whole right political spectrum to even harder right ideas.

The thing with the PVV (Party for Freedom) though is that they have been given a chance to co-govern the Netherlands in the recent past (Cabinet Rutte I Oct. 2010- Mar. 2012) and they blew it when it came to the point where they were actually a key player in a less than popular but necesarry decission.

And the way our government system works, the biggest party doesn't have to be the leading party.
If the smaller elected parties manage to get a working majority together in the parliament it is very possible that they get to govern.

Its the same here :) Thats what they did in the past, when Het Vlaams Blok/Belang won the elections the libs/socialists/democrats made a minority governement. You can wonder how democratic this is though. I think in a minority government it is alot harder to get things done, and afterwards the public opinion was "We should have let them govern and let them *** up"

Starbucks isn't "bad," but it's really no better than average and extremely overpriced. McDonald's coffee is no worse and about $2/cup cheaper. Seattle's Best is owned by Starbucks, and while we have none of their chains around here, I do find their retail coffee to be okay, at least as far as K-cups are concerned, and I will buy it when it's on sale. Otherwise I just go with Gevalia Columbian as I can get large boxes for a great price and it's better than all of them, imo.

Personally I either brew at home and bring my Thermos to work or I go to one of the local joints in proximity to my office, all of which are cheaper and better than Starbucks.

Time will tell, as it stands, both our counties have quite extensive experience running with demissionary governments, or even without.
If it does happen that the PVV climbs to power, a couple of friends and I will probably lay some bets as to how long Cabinet Wilders I will last.
All I'll say is, they aren't getting my vote.

The European Union is under threat from rising populism and nationalism fuelled by a record migrant influx, European Parliament president Martin Schulz warned Tuesday.

"The European Union is in danger. No one can say whether the EU will still exist in this form in 10 years," Schulz said in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt.

In the EU there were now "forces at work to drive us apart," said the German politician.

"We must avoid this because the consequences would be dramatic."

The alternative to the EU would be a "Europe of nationalism, a Europe of borders and walls" -- a formula that had led the continent into "catastrophe" repeatedly in the past, Schulz said.

Germany is on course to take in one million asylum seekers this year, half of them from Syria.

Schulz voiced concern about a lack of solidarity by many EU members in hosting the refugees, and about moves by several eastern European countries to build new barriers.

He said "the retreat of many governments into nation-based thinking is fatal".

"No country alone can handle challenges such as migration, climate change, terrorism, trade and international crime. We can only do it together, as the EU."
This is an important topic imo. Cause what happened in France the other day with the extreme right winning the majority of votes is not an isolated case. It's happening all over Europe, and in Italy too the far right gains worrying levels of consensus.
Philip II of Macedon said dividi et impera. The more our union falls apart, the weaker we become and a fertile ground for more wars.

This is the post 9/11 world that we live in. Unfortunately the terrorist *** have achieved their goal of dividing the world. I was born in 1980, and enjoyed the 90's decade. There was very little war, and when the USSR fell apart it seemed like there would be nothing but peace and a new age of wonder. There were issues that needed to be solved, but they seemed manageable. Now, due to ignorance and fear, the world is moving towards a situation that will make the previous 200 years of war look like the appetizer.

Our enemies are ignorance and false knowledge, deception and prejudice, inaction and apathy. We are one species who all want the same basic things, but we're greedy and selfish, short sighted and irresponsible.

Respect to the Germans for once again trying to lead humanity towards something better. Seriously the Germans are so infinitely ahead of the rest of the world in maturity.

Comparatively less war. If you're referring to the Kuwait/Iraqi/US war, very few people died in the first gulf war. It shouldn't even be classified as a war. It was more like a *** whooping. Although, 1,000,000 Iraqi children did die in the following decade due to the sanctions.

It wasn't an ideal situation, but even with all that and the ethnic cleansing of muslims in the Bosnian/Serbian/Kosovo/Albanian wars it wasn't close to the situation we have today.

We have:

Europe:
- The extreme far right on the rise as a knee-jerk reaction to terrorism.
- Crippled economies
- Influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees
- Turkey provoking Russia
- Eukraine and War entanglement

Africa:
I would need 24 hours and a lot of caffiene to even briefly touch upon the amount of problems here. But here are some of the biggest
- an exploding population of youth with no jobs and a lot of free time on their hands
- ancient tribal skirmishes across country borders slowly dragging entire nations to conflict and civil wars
- a resource war that has already begun and is in full effect due to droughts (Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt)
- EBOLA!!!
- Libya!!!
- Lets not forget the wonderful situation failed states such as Somalia are in.

ASIA:
-China vs everyone else in their neighberhoud. These guys are actually building frigging islands in the middle of the ocean to extend their ability to project their power. Can you imagine the conversation that unfolded in the power rooms over there?
"We need to keep everyone in check"
"too bad china land is here, and not there"
"thats good idea, take china to them. everyone make china in sea!"
- India/Pakistan: tick-tock tick-tock. What happens when two countries with nukes that want to destroy each other, decide its time to destroy each other?

Middle east:
- bat ***crazy (that is all)

Australia:
Crazy racist blond women on trains and buses are terrorizing poor short and skinny indian students!

American recent contributions to humanity: Bailed out the thiefs on wallstreet and the banks that almost tanked the world economy, rewarded corruption, Trump, Bush, countless wars, internal widespread racism towards minorities, especially those of African origins, acceptance of no refugees displaced as a direct result of american foreign policy, neighbors that detest you.

Also, one big one - if you're an American (or any other recognized national) you can get a free higher education in Germany... let me restate that.. you can get a free frigging bachelors degree.. paid for, by the German government and tax payer. The only condition is you spend 6 months learning German...

How many germans have crippling student loans?

hahaha, i don't understand why this is even a debate.

What is the wealth disparity like in Germany?

How big is the german middle class?

Is it growing or shrinking?

Whats the minimum wage in Germany?

What's the healthcare system like?

Put the statue of liberty in Frankfurt airport and add the line
"Free higher education as well".

hey, but that's all just facts for you. What really matters is
'MURICA!

There goes AO, acting like he is arrogantly wise again.

Well at least the first half of it is right.

What's interesting is when American conservatives default to comparisons to WWII, you don't see a whisper of immigration limitations Jewish refugees or their being outright denied access into the US only to be sent back to Europe to face their demise.

Somehow, it's like the US didn't learn anything, and it sounds weirdly familiar to current events. I can't quite put my finger on it, can you?

Then again, why learn from the harsh, crushing lessons of your predecessors, right?

The same reason the thread title exists?

They are not the only ones dealing with these minorities. It is all of Europe.

I ended up in an anti-Nazi march in Cologne in May. Germans are not happy with these people. They are overall happy with the immigrants.

I have never seen a neo march or anything as I was only in Germany for about 6 months back in 1997 and we did not leave base often as we were waiting to go to Iraq but they seem kind of unfriendly.
