14yo arrested bringing homemade clock to school
By Jassik 2015-09-24 10:52:01
It's hard to say that it was anything more than small-town cop curiosity.
Of course, but since we're being accused of being judgmental liberals we may as well act the part.
Honestly, I consider the whole thing a done deal unless there's some revelation. I just understand why someone completely innocent would assume that people will be suspicious. And I absolutely can't stand the people who are secretly hoping the kid's family are fundamentalists or something. Shouldn't the default be to hope there ISN'T foul play?

Shouldn't the default be to hope there ISN'T foul play? Ordinarily I'd assume good-will, but there are too many elements of this that are truly bizarre, and without reasonable explanation, to approach it with anything other than skepticism.
You don't know he just made a clock.
You don't know he's a puppet of his fundamentalist father.
Please resist urges to either defend brown boy or persecute terrorist, respectively, because
You.
Don't.
Know.

Well no, actually we do. At the time the people involved didn't but beyond any doubt now we know it was just a clock. The issue is the over or under (your view depending) reaction of those involved. It was just a clock and any attempt to imply otherwise is exactly what you're trying to scoff at.
And forgive me for being optimistic but I prefer to assume that everyone isn't out to blow people up. Yes, I don't know, but it doesn't take an enormous leap of logic to realise this kid was not.
Once again, hindsight is a potent tool.

No one is selling a product. You guys don't get it.
How do everyone approaches engineering at first? Disassembling and reassembling. Goddamn.

He did not invent anything, nor did he do anything more than partially disassemble and reassemble a working clock.

That's pretty impressive, when did you do that?

Whether he, ET, The Boogy Man, Hitler or Mr. Blobby made it, it's still a clock. You're really trying way too hard to look for a reason to judge this kid.

to make a virtue of one's vices.
So, did the kid take a bunch of parts that were not part of a working item and created a clock from it, or did the kid take a working clock and made...a working clock?
Are we supposed to applaud the kid for doing basically nothing more than disassembling and reassembling a clock? Is that worthy of a personal visit to the White House in your mind?

I've already commented on my views of his White House invite several pages back, and have no intention of repeating myself, least of all in what is an irrelevant context.
I'll repeat it one more time: this (herein referring to the particular current strain of debate) is not about whether he made the clock. This is about whether it was a clock, which it was. Any attempt to imply otherwise is pitch fork character assassination. Your motives for judging this kid regardless aside, there is no getting around the fact it's a clock. It does not matter who made it, it doesn't matter how technical or smart he is for taking it apart.
It's. Still. A. Clock.
Really not sure which part of that is tripping you up.

Oh right, because he claimed to have made a clock to show to his engineering teacher.
That's his defense, right? The whole point of bringing a clock to school? A clock that looked a lot like a hoax bomb that is.
Maybe I'm trying to show you intent, since you seem to like to ignore it....

Disassembling and reassembling is still giving him a lot of credit. He took the case off and put it in another case, seemingly not very securely either since parts were all dangling. Doesn't appear he disconnected ANY pieces in the process, as it all looks manufactured quality still in the pictures.
It doesn't matter that it's a clock, if it was made to look like(and successfully so, apparently) a bomb. People have been rightfully detained for less, bomb hoaxes aren't a laughing matter.

i'd make a clock using one of these kits

That's not a kit, that's an Arduino Uno with a 7-segment display and lcd display. Along with a resistor, some push buttons, a packaged chip that I can't make out the reading on, and I for the life of me can't tell what that vertical board is with that white bubble-like thing on the right (probably a light).
I'm rather pleased with seeing some proper length jumper wires, instead of spaghetti wiring.
Oh and a couple of breadboards, and a usb cable.

If his intention was to make a bomb hoax he wouldn't have showed it to the engineering teacher. He made it cause he wanted praise from said teacher.
I know everyone wants to show so hard that they can do better than this kid, but whether he is good at it or not no one cares.

What was the purpose of bringing the clock to school again?
Oh right, because he claimed to have made a clock to show to his engineering teacher.
Let's all shun the creative kid for pursuing an interest in how things work rather than just accepting they're there! Super reasonable of you! He took it to school because he thought he made something cool. He took it with the intention of showing his engineering teacher, which he did prior to all this blowing up (pun intended.) You're telling me that it's a bad thing for him to be interested in this? Or to take pride in his work? He's fourteen for ***'s sake. This is beyond pathetic and it's painful to think it's adults judging him so violently.
That's his defense, right? The whole point of bringing a clock to school? A clock that looked a lot like a hoax bomb that is.
Maybe I'm trying to show you intent, since you seem to like to ignore it....
Looked like a bomb according to who? You keep spouting this like it's some kind of argument but I'm sorry, if anyone thinks it was a bomb, they're an idiot. Pure and simple. Context has a lot to do with this. He's fourteen years old. He's at school. He's already known by his engineering teacher to have an interest in how things are made. How can you not see that the only reason anyone thinks this is a bomb is because they completely over reacted and the only reason you're so intent for this to be a bomb is because of your ridiculous prejudices.
If my fourteen year old kid took a clock apart and was happily showing it off, I'd be super encouraging, tell him to stick at it. If he asked to take it to school to show his teacher I'd say yes. Why? Because I'm sane. Was his English teacher? Nope. She completely over reacted. I can happily concede the cops did their job, even if I believe it was poor judgement. It's cool, they're still just doing their job and they had to treat it this way.
But honestly, if you think that clock looked like a bomb you have issues, or you watch waaaaaaaaay too many movies.
Maybe I'm trying to show you intent, since you seem to like to ignore it....
I'll admit I'm guilty for ignoring a lot of what you say, but it's not because you're intelligent, I assure you.
Ragnarok.Kongming said: »A clock that's still a clock that's been made to look like a bomb is still a hoax bomb.
So you keep saying, yet any reasonable person would not assume it's a bomb, nor that he attempted to make it a bomb. Bottom line is that you and others have come to a conclusion already that he's guilty and you'll clutch at any nonsensical logic to prove it. There is none, except the gloriously sinister "I heard" hearesay with no tangible evidence that the internet trafficks in whenever things like this happen.

what constitutes to "looking like a bomb" ?
This didn't look like a bomb at first:

Of course it doesn't look like a real bomb. It looks like what most people think a bomb might look like. If you're going to make a hoax bomb, you're not going to make something that doesn't look like a bomb the way real bombs don't look like bombs, you're going to make something that looks like the way people think a bomb looks.
The kid himself thought it looked suspicious. Isn't disagreeing with him a form of contradiction, since it's his position that you're defending?

did anyone get the super dark conspiracy theorist thought/idea that maybe in an alternate universe if there was real ill intention that the kid took the case with the disassembled clock to school to show off to teachers to get their confidence that the case was just a clock then come the following days bring it to school when it was packed with explosives and no one would expect it since it was just a "clock"
maybe i'm playing too much metal gear solid or something

Sure somebody could package the items and resell it, but meh. Kind of has some odd parts, imo.

Not even going to go into the amount of backwards logic that this post took, welcome to being the first person on the list.

Quote: 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed arrested for bringing homemade clock to school
Police in Texas have arrested a 14-year-old boy for building a clock. Ahmed Mohamed, who lives in Irving and has a keen interest in robotics and engineering, put the device together on Sunday night. When he took it to school the next day, he was pulled out of class, interviewed by police officers, and taken in handcuffs to juvenile detention, after being told by teachers that his creation looked like a bomb.
Ahmed told The Dallas Morning News that he showed his clock — a simple device, created from a circuit board and a power supply wired to a digital display, all strapped inside a case with a tiger hologram on the front — to his engineering teacher first, who advised him not to show any other staff members at MacArthur High School. He originally kept it in his bag during English class, but his teacher heard it beep during the lesson — when Ahmed showed her his home-made clock at the end of class, she took it away from him. In sixth period, the school principal came for Ahmed with a police officer in tow, arresting him and marching him out of school. The schoolboy says he was interrogated by five officers, who asked why he was trying to make a bomb, and was threatened with expulsion by his Principal unless he made a written statement.
Ahmed may still be charged with making a "hoax bomb"
Irving police might still charge Ahmed with making a "hoax bomb." Police spokesperson James McLellan said Ahmed "kept maintaining it was a clock" when he was brought in for interrogation, but that he offered "no broader explanation." When asked by The Dallas Morning News what broader explanation Ahmed could have given for a clock that was actually a clock, McLellan said the creation "could reasonably be mistaken as a device if left in a bathroom or under a car." A police report released on Tuesday cites three MacArthur High teachers as complainants against Ahmed for the "hoax bomb."
Ahmed's father says his son was mistreated because of prejudice against Muslims
Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, Ahmed's father, says his child suffered because of prejudice against Muslims. "Because his name is Mohamed and because of September 11th," Mohamed told The Dallas Morning News, "I think my son got mistreated." The Council on American-Islamic Relations is already investigating Ahmed's case, with Alia Salem, the director of the council's North Texas chapter, saying that it seemed "pretty egregious."
Ahmed said he was a member of his middle school's robotics club, and had tried to find a similar group in his high school. Now the 14-year-old — born in the same year that the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon took place — says he'll no longer bring any of his inventions into school. A picture reportedly taken by Ahmed's sister shows him in handcuffs at the juvenile detention center, sporting a NASA T-shirt and an understandably confused expression. Ahmed was fingerprinted, before being allowed to return home, but is still serving a three-day suspension from school.
Many in the maker and tech community have already rallied around him. A hashtag — #IStandWithAhmed — rapidly rose to become one of Twitter's top trending topics, and support has come from a number of sources, including a JPL engineer who offered Ahmed the chance to see a Mars rover whenever he wants. Ahmed's father says his son "just wants to invent good things for mankind" — we can hope that the police reaction won't dissuade the talented young creator from making good on his dream.
