it's that a lot of our rules about vaccination are moronically counter-productive.
Small correction: it's not vaccination rules that you're bothered by, it's immigration rules.

A verifiably healthy adult from a western European country (for instance) has to jump through hoops and dump a pile of money to gain citizenship, even when marrying a citizen. Meanwhile, any third world child whose mother managed to sneak across the border is given free citizenship, no questions asked.

Now, if you want to imply that you are not anti-vax, then why are you arguing against vaccinations?
He claims there are "too many" vaccinations. Which is like saying this beach is lovely, it just has "too many" waves: a meaninglessly vague pronouncement that belies the deliberately obscured position.

Too many? How many vaccinations do we really have anyway?

Better question, how many vaccinations do we typically have per year?

Talk about meaninglessly vague.... Surprised you didn't use a TV show for the analogy..

First thing first, he's referring to childhood vaccinations. Remember, the overwhelming majority of anti-vax people were vaccinated in childhood, experienced no ill effects, and survived avoided the onslaught of childhood diseases that could have disabled or killed them.

Anyhow, going by the CDC recommendations, we've got about 3 vaccinations for Hep B (which is, let's remember, an H-virus, one of the last things any sane person wants to contract), 2 for rotavirus, 5 of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis), 3-4 for hemophilic influenza (a particularly deadly strain of an already dangerous virus), 4 for pneumococcis (another very efficient killer of small children), 4 for polio, 2 of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), 2 for varicella, 2 for Hep A, a rapid 3-dose series for HPV, and 1 for meningitis. There's also the annual recommendation for the flu vaccine.

Of course, a lot of these are administered at the same time. And most of us probably didn't get all of them because vaccines weren't available or hadn't been recommended when we were kids. In all likelihood, virtually all of us posting here were too old to be given the HPV vaccine, for instance, because we probably already have been infected with it. It's just warts, of course... warts that cause fun things like cervical and penile cancer, but just warts. You aren't worried about warts, right? My father, who is a physician, seriously considered vaccinating me for HPV a couple years ago just in case but it would've been trouble if the medical board found out, showing that bureaucracy is alive and stupid.

I wouldn't want to risk any of these diseases. And, statistically, the most dangerous vaccines are also the ones associated with the most virulent and dangerous infections (this correlation is not a coincidence, by the way), so the rather more mundane ones that have crept in like HPV and the infections that one is more likely to get later in life (hepatitis in particular) just add to the numbers and provide a meaningless argument of "OMG so many shots!" The overwhelming majority of these, by the by, are recommended before your baby's second birthday. It's such a burden, too, actually taking your incredibly fragile infant to see a physician multiple times a year.

I guess it is for pro-vax people. My wife and I know our pediatrician and have several doctors in the family and remarkably a lot of those shots can be spread out over the coarse of years and some like you said are not really necessary. Why would my child's pediatrician agree and confirm that all these shots given at such a young age could possibly be bad for my children? Seems that introducing foreign compounds into humans cause the body to react by getting a temperature, and while yes this is a normal thing not everyone reacts to foreign compounds the same way.

Do you not know what Rhetorical means?

Besides, just a heads up, there is nothing in either of those two quotes showing how Onorgul being hypocritical.

Oh, and to bring this one question out:

Altimaomega said: »

Are you sure he said that, and that you didn't make that up in your mind? It's very possible that you heard one thing and he said something completely different.

Wow, you guys are insane.

How can I possibly admit to being part of the anti-vax crowd when my children are vaccinated "just later in life and only for the highly recommended"

The simple fact that no middle ground exists with you people is the main reason I have not brought it up until now.

And yes, if you actually understand what Ono was saying it was being hypocritical. I'm sorry if you are too blind to see it.

If this is an honest sentiment and you truly want to know I would hope if you have children or plan on it, to get informed and ask questions. Don't just conform to the herd mentality like most of this forum apparently does.

I've just never heard of a paediatrician not recommending vaccination.
Its not like they didn't get what they needed, and surprise! I have 2 extremely healthy children, just like their parents, great grandparents so on and so forth before vaccines even existed. Its not like your body has no immune system.

That's not the statement that put you in the anti-vax crowd.

This was the statement:

Altimaomega said: »

You attributed a group of people as someone other than you. Since there are only two groups of people in this argument (pro vs. anti), that automatically placed you in the anti group.

Altimaomega said: »

What middle ground? You either do get vaccinated or you don't. This is an either/or situation.

If you are pro vaccinations, you get vaccinated, and you get your kids vaccinated. If you are anti vaccinations, you don't get vaccinated, and you don't get your kids vaccinated.

Altimaomega said: »

Sorry, there is nothing hypocritical about either of those statements. He is telling the truth that a majority of the anti-vax crowd did get vaccinated when they were children, they didn't see the diseases as they were growing up because they were vaccinated for those diseases, and they don't see the risk associated with those diseases, so they assume that those vaccines didn't work because they were vaccinated from it.

You are a classic case for this video:

If we're throwing around anecdotes willy-nilly, even at the media height of Jenny McCarthy peddling her anti-vax stance in '08/'09 until now, I can't think of anyone I know whose pediatricians didn't roll their eyes or immediately halt the conversation when friends who were curious about the "potential" (/spooky fingers) adverse effects that were being hemmed and hawed about.

Never thought to object to vaccinations myself, because it seems like common sense at this point in the game.

I'm pretty sure anyone who has kids, other than Altima, could thrown in their experiences also. Somehow, I think, if we pooled from parents on here, the lingering question would be: Is Altima's pediatrician a quack who fished his/her medical degree from the bottom of a Cracker Jacks box?

Never ever heard of a pediatrician condoning the anti-vax stance or veering from scheduled vaccinations. You would effectively be leaving your kid in the dust come kindergarten, if not pre-K. Especially with the DTaP vax schedule. That is a must.
