I find this one interesting because of the time frame involved...

Police: Teen posed as doctor at West Palm Beach hospital

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Police in Florida and officials at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach have agreed not to charge a teenager they caught posing as a doctor.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports police were called Tuesday after a patient alerted staff at the medical center's OB/GYN office that a juvenile dressed in a lab coat was inside an exam room. The patient said the lab coat had St. Mary's logo and "anesthesiology" stitched on the front.

A security guard told police he'd seen the teen around the hospital for a month. Another said the teen entered secured areas of the hospital this week.

The teen told police he's been a doctor for years.

The teen's mother told police he's under the care of a doctor and is not taking his medicine.

Frank Abagnale, on top of being a very unreliable source for tales of his own grandeur, was older than this kid and definitely worked in a very, very different era of medicine.

It does go to prove the most basic principle of the con (or the psychotic delusion, as the case may be): look like you belong there. One of the nurse assistants at my physician's office is a fellow who doesn't even look like he can buy alcohol, which isn't helped by him being about 5'5", and I'd question him doing anything more than checking my vital signs. But I'm also the first person to ask, "Who is this person and why are they here?" Medical students get slightly affronted when I start doing their job for them, which is half the fun.

Also, is anyone surprised this happened in Florida? Anyone at all?

My GP is the family practice at a hospital that has family medicine residencies in a semi-rural area, and it's always amusing getting the first year residents who have yet to develop the professional detatchment found in veteran practitioners, or that only expect one type of patient. I work in a medical field, though not a health care specialist myself, and they tend to be a bit taken aback when they realize they don't have to talk to you like you just jumped off the hay wagon.

I thought you lived in Michigan? Which is hardly an improvement, mind you.

And I never said there was anything wrong with him being short. He was ridiculously cute and I wanted to ask for his number, but propriety and all that.

Seriously, though, it seems like at least 50% of all the outrageous news stories I see circulated involve Florida. One would expect CA, TX, or NY simply by sheer population, to say nothing of the roving packs of loonies in all three, but America's Wang™ has been working overtime lately.

I wasn't aware Michigan was inhabited.
