Dragon's Dogma Online
By Kalila 2014-12-09 23:50:09
Dengeki PlayStation this week features a questionnaire with 107 game developers, including the director of Dragon’s Dogma, producer of its Dark Arisen expansion, and the producer of the Sengoku Basara series.
Here’s what they had to say:
Dragon’s Dogma director Hideaki Itsuno: “We’ve got several games in the pipeline right now. One of them is even in the last stages right now. We should be able to announce it soon.”
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen producer Minaeu Matsukawa: “We’re working really hard to get ready for people to learn about what we have coming up in 2015 and get them excited to play those games.”
Sengoku Basara series producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi: “2015 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Sengoku Basara franchise. You can expect a lot of exciting announcements and developments in light of the occasion.”
It might be worth noting that Dragon’s Dogma Online was trademarked last week, and there was an interesting news post at the game’s official site last week (which was since removed).
What are your thoughts?
I enjoyed Dragon's Dogma and am curious as to what an Online version would be like, though I wonder how it would affect the formula they had going with the original game.

A few people are speculating that Deep Down will be rebranded to Dragon's Dogma Online.
From what I've seen from Deep Down though, it didn't really seem like a Dragon's Dogma feel to me.

Dragon's Dogma was fun as hell. It had a few flaws like a boring plot and annoying voices(I've never heard the word aught before playing DD but it was the #1 most used word in that game). Flaws aside, combat was extremely fun and the classes and techniques were visually stunning. I don't usually like Mage or Ranged jobs in RPGs but DD made mages feel extremely powerful, especially with spells like Bromide and Maelstrom.
I like how there wasn't any 'MP' or 'Mana' really, but spells took a long time to cast and you could be interrupted. It made it fun when you were fighting a boss and you had to cast one of those 15-20second charge time Bolide or Maelstrom spells and the tension right before it was cast and the anticipation of getting off a severely damaging spell was rewarding. I don't know about an 'online' version but it woulda been cool enough if it was offline but you could invite friends into your world occasionally to tackle a hard dungeon or something.
Also the one thing Dragon Dogma did SO rate was capes/mantles. Fu*ck, capes look so good in that game!

A Dragon's Dogma with co-op where you can invite a friend and their pawn in your party of 4 would be interesting, or you two dismiss your pawn and just duo the world together.
However, from my experience, games don't adjust very well when another player joins your game. The enemy AI doesn't make up for 2 minds thinking strategically about defeating it, it makes it really difficult for the AI to compete against 2 players when it was designed for 1.
Also, I don't know how I feel about seeing other players in the game.

I mean what's the difference between the enemy fighting against you and 3 AI comrades and instead having you and 1-2 real comrades? It's the same thing I would think.
I don't want to pay for a subscription for an MMO and an MMO requires a crapload of time and commitment and usually graphical quality is degraded due to server and manpower etc. Being able to tackle a large dungeon for loot with a friend or do an Ur Dragon style fight with your friends where you can show off your gear would be fun. DD:Dark Arisen had so much gear, almost too much gear and it almost seemed wasted on it being a short game with a moderately sized world but no player 2 player interaction.

A pawn can't compare to a player. I don't know of any games where the AI is smarter than a player. To make an enemy challenging they tend to just give a "difficult" enemy a huge HP pool and attacks you could never possibly obtain that does huge damage and has a huge area of effect. They can also make the enemy 2-3 times faster than you, teleport, turn invisible, or a hundred other tricks that you can't do.

Dark Souls doesn't seem to have a problem having short bursts of multiplayer when you summon phantoms to your world for boss fights; whether it's player or NPC, it's still quite easy to get rocked. Also its easy to scale bosses HP/Stats for players/Pawns plus EXP would get reduced but it could be more fun to farm hard content with friends to get loot. Also that castlevania harmony of despair worked well, though not technically an RPG like DD, stuff scaled.

Dogma was fun as hell and the last consule game I played... Another installment would most likely be the tipping point for buying a ps4

Dark Souls AI wasn't able to handle 2 players properly. If you stood close and attacked the enemy it would focus on you instead of who it was hunting. It was easily exploited.
Case 1: You're solo and you summon solaire to fight ornstein and smough.
Case 2: You summon a player who has hundreds of hours experience who can kill them both solo in about 2 minutes.
Case 3: You summon a friend who has the same experience as you.
In order of which is most effective:
Case 2 > Case 3 > Case 1
Case 2 would clearly be the more powerful choice, you can stand back and let them do all the work for you. Case 3 will be much more difficult than 2, and you will probably still have to try a few times but not nearly as much as if you tried completely solo. Case 1 is the least powerful because of the summon's AI and damage output. Summons don't take risks and try to spam when windows open, nor do they run away when they are in danger. They get destroyed if you don't take the focus off of them.

Story didn't appeal to me much, it had some very solid ideas, but just felt executed badly. Just my opinion though.
The gameplay, however, was extremely good, and the endgame content and replayabillity truly makes it a magnificent game, unless, all you care about in games is the story.
Have been craving a new installation, hopefully with Samurai and Dragoon-type vocations!

Honestly I would rather just have a Dragons Dogma 2. I enjoy, as in still play, the first one. Having thrashed everything all I really have left to do is hit the level cap, but I still have fun laughing at pawns as they get smacked around by a dragon, trying to get augmented items that are a bit better, and occasionally doing a pixel of damage to that *** dragon.
Online play would be interesting though, would be nice having a player character who could use some skills as intended, ignoring the sometimes wonky AI (having a mage pawn climbing on a boss ftl).
They could do some kind of level range limits like they do with summoning pawns, where summoning a player ally costs rift crystals and the higher their level the higher the rift crystal cost.
Maybe a little bit of what Dark Souls 2 does (I only heard about this watching a let's play) where they reduce the amount of damage each player character does when they have other players summoned.

Wouldn't mind an online co-op thing, I mean they could really make it interesting if they do things right.
Quite a few Augments and Abilities in the first installation (DA included) were either very weak, or flat out broken though.
Some examples off the top of my head: the aggro-drawing abilities like Shield Drum/War Cry. Either just didn't do what they were intended for, or just had very little to no effect.
And some augments like the spell interruption reduction augment, the poison potency augment, and some others.
Then there are abilities pawns badly utilize, I mostly find it in the spells though. Even with the correct inclinations (which is important, it does help alot with the correct settings to what you want from a pawn) the buff spells are poorly executed, most notably the enspell spells--their name escapes me right now.
So, yeah, if they were to address the useless abilities/tweak pawns a bit, online could be quite interesting. Someone giving out buffs/cures in a timely and effective manner, while you keeping aggro off them/damaging the monster along with the pawns, etc.
That's just one of the many party combinations, could make some interesting ones depending on the monster.
I guess for Co-op you would have you and your main pawn with someone else and theirs.
Since the game would be made with co-op in mind, assuming that is what is to come, I'm sure they would design battles accordingly.
If I were developing, I'd probably make some endgame dungeons designed solely with co-op in mind, so content difficultly would be made appropriate for two minds.

Hard to say, Apparently Capcom is drunk when it comes to which system it randomly picks for titles these days.

A dragoon type vocation would be nice, it wouldn't have to have "Jump" because that's trademarked but maybe make it specialize in faster flurries, somewhere between a Warrior and a Rogue(but lacks the sweeping aoe of Warrior and the archery of Rogues), or at least add polearms to 2 handed weapons that warriors can use. I'm tired of all of these dragon slaying open world rpgs that don't have polearms(Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma, Dragon Age). Would love to play a lance weilding knight and poke things instead of playing a generic sword and board or greatsword warrior.
Also 2 handed weapons should get double the number of techniques to set since they can't use shields. It was disappointing that Warriors and Mages could only use 3 techniques but jobs with a shield could use 6.

Agree with this, well, do that, or give the vocation a buff in base stats, or something.
Warrior is extremely weak when compared to most the vocations in terms of DPS and survivability. An argument is made that it is about crowd control and knocking things down, but who really cares when a single Mystic Knight can decimate all in sight, quite frankly. The vocation definitely needs some buffs, kinda sucks being a glass rocket launcher, unlike Mythic Knight, being a damn titanium cannon (no pun intended).

doesnt look next gen if that's what you mean, but then again, MMO's kinda suffer when they go all out on visual quality, such as bad town lag and ***
