This jackass has a history of using his money to ruin people's lives, such as in one article I read where he harassed an employee, going so far as to send him a letter saying he will ruin him and his family, and then went to his daughters on facebook saying how their father did nothing but steal and betray him.

This guy needs a wake up call now. He's worse than Justin Bieber in terms of his arrogance.

You really want to completely deregulate an industry that has high upfront costs and meticulous methods by which drugs need to be proven 'safe'? Cause I'm sure you'll love when drugs with 'unforunate' side effects pour into the market to make quick profits with little to no accountability.

I'm sure keeping the market oppressively regulated and just profit shaming is a far better means to an end. Amirite?

Of course you would take deregulate to mean never hold anyone responsible ever again in that industry. It doesn't need to mean that, reasonable people understand you can let a bit of air out of a balloon without letting it all out.

Someone doesn't understand how markets work. Increase the supply (through competition) or don't and whine that someone doesn't give two shits about your feelz.

He bought the monopoly on the pills, people will be forced paying because not taking the medication is going to kill them.

People not being able to pay will die.

But yeah, feelz, preventing abortions of fetus is more important and totally not feelz.

Unless they buy them from India. Apparently the price increase on Daraprim only applies within USA, and the drug sells for less than a dollar in India.

People travel to USA for life-saving cancer treatment all the time. So I imagine traveling to India for lifesaving medication at an affordable price isn't out of the question either.

But it's illegal to import it to the US, so you have to move to India I suppose?

I'm going to fly to India, buy up a buncha these pills and make a mint selling 'em on the black market. *** yeah.

People seem to forget that these pills can be bought generic.....

But then again, they got to do their knee-jerks for the week, right?

No, there's no generic version of Daraprim avaiable in the USA. Which is why he has the monopoly.
Well, I was lied to then.

Or I don't care enough to search for it myself....

Even if there were generic versions available, the company is looking for new uses or improvements for Daraprim, which will give them a new patent on the drug.

I imagine there might be a market for a cheaper generic now, but first a drug company would need to get their hands on it despite the tight distribution controls then have sufficient time to synthesize it. Just don't get sick in the meantime kk^^

So what's the solution to make pricing more fair without removing the economic incentive to produce new products? I'm looking for a smarter answer than "socialism" here.

Obviously didn't read the article. Hedge fund manager buys pharma company, buys companies that make genetics, hikes the price now that he owns the monopoly. There's a word for it, it's called profiteering, and it's illegal.

If you're creating something new, you're welcome to sell it at whatever the market will bear. Buying up something someone else invented and all the competitors then hiking the price just because you can is why anti-trust laws exist.

Anti-trust and profiteering laws are a solution, they're just poorly enforced. A more effective solution would be to de-privatize healthcare. Apparently that's off the table because teh gubment can't do anything right and there must be profit for everything.

Not a solution.

Economic incentive isn't the free market at work. Sounds like socialism to me.

Economic incentive doesn't always imply government intervention. I don't know why you chose such a narrow definition.

You got the first half of that right.

Here's the thing... I hear all kinds of complaints about socialism and regulation and all kinds of "what's your solution" but I rarely hear any coherent alternatives offered. If the government isn't an option and regulation isn't an option, what solution do you offer that isn't status quo or has just as many people filling medical bankruptcy or dying of treatable conditions?
