No. And thank you for clarifying.

I'll remain skeptical about the FCC trying to go that route, if only because they haven't gone there yet despite having had power for even longer than the EPA. But time will tell.

Overall production instead of per capita, since per capita favors smaller countries more than higher producing countries in that standard.
What is overall production? The name sure sounds like it just goes by how much money a country makes (using a really bad definition) which, again, favors any country with a ton of people. That China and India are still in the process of industrializing (and lest someone get snippy, there are parts of the US that only got electricity and telephone service in the past 10 years) may be the only thing keeping them from the top of that kind of list. How is it meaningful?

Drones in France... funny because they are unable to track them down, or scary because they have been seen spying on various place where terroristic actions could have great symbolic impact? (Nuclear power plants, president's Palace ect.)

Question is, what's important in France, besides the contents of their next surrender?

Why does everyone have to go and stereotype France all the time? France has a lot to offer, like cheese, and croissants, and white flags, and... other stuff probably.

I can hope that the FCC doesn't go the route of the EPA, but I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they do.

Overall production (in general terms) is the production associated with the goods and/or services from start to finish. Mainly stating that its the adjusted production of items in various steps in the production line. In other words, the value of screws are included in the production of GDP, but you don't include the production of screws in GDP unless they are sold to a consumer separately (the screws in the computer are part of the computer itself and not counted towards GDP, vs. screws you buy at a hardware store to replace/repair an item, which is counted towards GDP). That's about as basic as I can get for overall production.

Maybe if we are all xenophobes, but since domestic product is showing the value of goods/services produced in a specific country, it doesn't mean that the goods/service have to be purchased on in that specific country.

personally I would have liked the Comcast service I had paid for to not throttle back the Netflix service that I had already paid for until they got Netflix to cough up protection speed money last winter.

But some people enjoy not being able to use a service they pay for because someone else is extorting them, I personally don't.

I just don't see how taking the production of a huge country like the US and comparing it to a small country like, to pick at random, Uruguay, is a good way to compare the two. If I have 10 people assembling widgets all day, why should the gross amount of widgets I produce be compared favorably or unfavorably to the gross amount of widgets produced by a rival company with 1,000 people doing assembly?

There's also the question of how much of that money is reaching individuals. Qatar is a perfect example of a place where the per-person income looks amazing, but a cursory examination of the place indicates that a ridiculous proportion live in crippling, deadly poverty. If we're really going to use money as a means of saying which country is doing better, it seems like it should compare something like median income to cost-of-living and somehow adjust for how many people are actually paid within one standard deviation of median income (again, Qatar looks great if you fail to do that last thing).

Bear in mind that I'm not an economist and haven't studied this, so if I'm way off in left field, tell me. I just can't wrap my head around why gross production is an adequate measure of the success of individual citizens.

That's another issue, but guess what: instead of bribing comcast they could have spent that money on content contracts.

Because obviously the 1,000 people producing is going to be more than the 10, by more than a hundredfold.

The value of the production is greater overall if you have more people producing more products.

That's a different scenario, and has nothing to do with how much production a country has compared to another country.

The concept of comparing countries together isn't by a per person value, but by how much producing power that country has.

You are at least asking the right questions.

The situation was comparing countries together, not productivity of the individual.

If we were to compare productivity of the individual, then we would use a per capita approach.

What does the measure of a country's producing power tell us, though, when compared to another country's? Nikolce is saying that Finland is a necessarily worse country than the US because it has a much lower GDP, which (correct me if I'm wrong) is one measure of production. I was simply pointing out that studies indicate Finland's education system appears more effective.

I do see the implied connection between good education and good economy, but my concern here is that I don't know if the "good economy" metric being used is accurate. I'm also not sure if it accounts for a variety of other factors, including tax rates, social services, and measures of happiness. For all that these discussions tend to be distilled down to who has more money, it's been repeatedly demonstrated that the richest people nonetheless feel insecure in their wealth and appear to be rather unhappy as a consequence.

Given the choice between an education that leaves my brain more able and adept but also trains me to be less concerned with material wealth or an education that teaches me how to be rich but unhappy, I'm going to lean to the former. Indeed, that's exactly how I do live my life. I suspect New Englanders have a lot in common with Scandinavians on these matters.

That's not the argument at all.

Netflix was the biggest, most obvious use of bandwidth throttling to force a company out of business. There are other, smaller examples, but you'd have to be told who the company is and how the *** was achieved. Netflix is just a convenient example, it has nothing to do with whether someone likes or doesn't like Netflix. Amazon, Hulu, and YouTube have all be subject to similar threats, and I'm sure that ISPs have been looking closely at Activision to throttle World of Warcraft subscribers until they give them more money.

It's literally a shake-down. It doesn't matter whether it's Netflix or Joe's Laundry that was the victim.
