However, the *monetary value* of gold is based almost entirely around whimsy and novelty, primarily as symbol of social status, and has little practical value. The primary value of gold has it's origins as a symbol of divinity - basically, novelty. But then *stupid* people are always willing to give the shiniest of things a higher *monetary value* than that which is practical.

Your argument was that Gold has value - at least on the basis it has more value than a human life. (inb4 Obama's not human) If we're going to use a pound by pound example based on monetary worth, Obama's managed to raise just over a billion dollars in campaign funds. Romney just shy of 1 billion dollars. Gold, on the other hand, only has limited value based on concepts of being marketable entirely for novelty purposes, and pound for pound, is worth less than Obama or Romney.

I don't believe that is accurate.

To be fair, gold does have some very practical uses in technology as it's an excellent conductor, but somewhat whimsically it would probably have more use (and be better-used) in such a fashion, but it would be "worth less" in that capacity.

Well, I wouldn't "like" it as you sort of come off as selfish an uncaring sometimes and I suspect it's something to the effect of "good for them for doing their job and setting themselves up for so long". But still.

The value placed on gold is designed to provide a universal method of exchange. Otherwise you're subject to barter rules in which you have to wait until someone else wants what you have or can provide.

Fiat currencies will never replace a universal method of exchange. In order to do so, you have to build an empire and dominate the globe with an unstoppable military and in the process kill millions of people who dare to question your authority.

Every country that has tried to do this has failed miserably and the U.S. is no exception.

You and a few others like to say this. NK isn't socialist, it's a tyranical dictatorship. There are socialist economies in Europe very worth living in, but sadly I'm a slave to the American system, both through actions of myself and others. It is what it is.

Nothing I said is even remotely socialist. The truth is that gold doesn't have a whole lot of practical value, and is dictated primarily by whimsy of the "OOO SHINEY" crowd of a special brand of retards. Does it have practical value in electronics and technology as a conductive metal? Sure. But please, tell me why gold is so valuable outside of whimsical novelty, outside of the aforementioned conductive properties used in technology.

Since I know I'll get plenty of support for saying this...

I'm really growing tired of the blogs and pseudo-news articles on Huffington Post. I rarely read whatever the equivalent conservative site would be, but I fear it may be the same: really arrogant and self-important people trying to pretend their own navel-gazing deep thoughts are true for everyone or, worse still, that everyone should do as they do.

Telling people to stifle about their coming out stories or writing a sarcastic and condescending post about using your autistic kid to get out of social obligations... just ugh. I wouldn't care if this was on someone's LiveJournal or Blogspot or whatever the hell the kids use these days, but this notion of "news bloggers" has gone rather a bit too far, even if it is very much in the same tradition as the editorial page of the newspaper.
