Not to mention that Wally World's employees are not going there for a long-term position. The retention rate in that store is horrendous.

Mainly because the modus operandi of stores like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target is to hire and fire quickly before benefits kick in. They have all sorts of nefarious tools designed to frustrate you out of working there be it inflexible hours, hellion for managers or turning the staff on eachother.

Why would they care? They have an endless list of goons to hire.

It's not the customer breaking them. It's management imputing incorrect procedures and bar code values. One location's self checkout stations were down for 4 months before they figured out what was wrong - Manager caused the problem, cashier fixed the error, manager got a raise and promotion.

Well he deserved it! He knew how to properly manage people to fix his own mistakes! That's a valuable asset in the business world.

Nikolce has the monopoly on those. Maybe he'll let you borrow some if you ask nicely?

Care to prove your statement, or are you just going to blindly state it and hope it sticks?

Because if you can prove it, I will let you in on the multi-billion dollar lawsuit that I will file, against Fair Labor Act regulations.

King, you ever work a day in a ***-tier retail job or are you living in Cloud City where idealism springs eternal? Countless lawsuits have been filed in the past against WalMart not to mention their overseas abuses.

Low level retail is some of the most soul-crushing ***you could probably ever do. You're in purgatory with incompetents, washouts, hasbeens, old people and doe-eyed upstarts who have no idea what they've signed up for all while being paid garbage with little opportunity to advance.

It's less a job and more indentured servitude until you can buy your way to a real job.

You just described playing FFXI. XI was definitely soul crushing when you cast lots and roll a 2. Dealt with people that never show up to events. And have linkshell leaders borderline insane !

Rely on shout groups because the population is way too low.

Deal with JP ONRY etc.

McDonalds during college and summer when I was younger. Just to keep from going crazy during periods of boredom. I couldn't exactly travel (my money was frozen in a trust) and I needed the extra cash for specific items not school related (like paying for my subscription to FFXI). It sucked, but you know what? That job is not meant to support a family off of it's wages.

unwelcome sexual advances
This qualification on sexual harassment always worries me. If I invite you out for coffee, it doesn't take a long stretch of the imagination to conclude I'm sexually interested and if you think I'm icky, well...

And I say this as someone who has been sexually harassed and groped in the workplace. Too broad a definition dilutes the point being made.

Sometimes. It's a gamble. But then, so is the yellow pages tbh.
I work at a lot of construction sites that have a lot of Mexican immigrants working there. I don't know nor care about their legal status, but I've seen more safety violations and general bad work from them than anyone else. Their motivation seems to be to get the job done as quickly as possible whenever someone is watching.

Hiring a licensed contractor, even a member of a trade union, comes with its own problems (anyone notice that Vanilla Ice got arrested for burglary while doing contractor work next door?), but they're likely to be the lesser of two evils.

You know, I see this argument all the time...

What job is meant to support a family, exactly? Not everyone can pay for college, especially since the Republicans are going to axe Obama's plan for free associate's degrees to anyone who puts in the work, and even if your college is paid for, that's not going to put food on the table and keep the lights on if you have a spouse or kids.

People aren't salivating and wanting to work at McDonald's or Wal-Mart, but if that's the only option, this notion that they should literally starve and wind up on public welfare is *** stupid. There's a reason some people stay on welfare instead of working, too, and being offered nothing better than a minimum wage, part-time job is at the top of that list.

There are ways to protect yourself from bad contractors.

It's called checking their previous work. Asking for referrals, and so forth.

And while there are a lot of bad contractors, licensed or not, the majority of the licensed ones are actually good and walk their clients through procedures step by step, set up proper payment schedules (paid for materials and work done in intervals), etc.

No one "forces" you to work at McDonald's or Wal Mart. As for college I know plenty of people that have degrees and still work at Wal Mart etc. Cause they owe 70,000 dollars in student loans. Plus can't find a job in Computer Science. etc

My friend is pretty damn smart but he is working at Wal Mart changing oil and tires at Wal Mart. Graduated from a really good university etc. College doesn't mean you will be successful.

Wait, you really want to go over the extreme dangers Obama's plan entailed?

It isn't free unless you pass with a B average or above. Get even one C grade and the entire cost is due back to the government.

What about if you drop out? Guess who's on the hook for that? Yup, the student is, not the government.

Seriously, that plan of Obama's was to create more poverty-stricken citizens, with overwhelming debt.

You can thank the Republicans for stopping such a horrible idea from passing.

First off, thank you for admitting that there is a problem with the "lifetime welfare" issue we have going on in America.

Secondly, minimum wage jobs are not the only jobs available for people to work. There are a lot of jobs out there that nobody wants to work because it's not the cushy jobs that retail offers, and those jobs do not even require a high school diploma.

Then there's trade-related jobs. There is a huge shortage of truck drivers, plumbers, carpenters, accredited contractors, and other trade-related jobs now. These jobs require a little more thinking than your average high-school dropout, but it's completely possible for them to learn it and work in these fields. All of the mentioned fields pay well over minimum wage too....

Yeah, after my college is all said and done, the total amount I paid for it is $132,000. I would hate to see how much in student loans I would have had to pay if I actually got them...
