Dude, even fast food wants you to have a 2 year diploma from college. A HS diploma alone leaves you wide open to making markedly less than your college peers regardless of choices.

The last bastion of "make middle class money without a degree" has been getting your CDL and driving a truck for a while now; and self-driving trucks are coming for those jobs, too.
That's going to be a hell of a thing, when that happens.
I remember watching a segment where a trucking company CEO was all but shouting that he's got all these jobs and can't find anyone to take them. 50-60k/yr jobs.
His selling point was that you could do it short term in your 20s then move on since in that age bracket it's less likely you have obligations that you need to be tied down for. But it's trucking. I'd say many people don't even know they exist considering the stereotypes around truckers.
It was a business segment on TV where the CEO was on to talk about his industry but it segued into talking about how it's difficult for him and his people to recruit new truckers. The interviewer then tied that to the unemployment issues which is where the whole 'solid jobs, solid wages' above comes from.
