Wal Mart is already getting rid of most cashiers. It will no longer be a job in the near future.

I always use self checkout whenever I go to Walmart. The cashier lines are far too long and the people working them... yeah.

Oh I snapped at the CVS cashier once for taking her sweet *** time.

"This is horrible customer service. Why is this taking so long? I can't believe you guys haven't placed self-checkouts in your stores. Where is your manager?!"

The theory is that paying them more will make them good employees.

I have a better idea RATHER than paying unskilled labor more, how about we pay our fresh-out-of-college youth MORE.

Nausi pointed this out earlier, but the gap between minimum wage and entry-level college graduate wage is getting very thin. It puts unnecessary strain in the workplace, because employers have to layoff people and designate additional duties to their employees.

That's the dream.

I hate people, so I avoid going anywhere near a cashier if there's any conceivable way I can. I bought some pajama pants on clearance from Target last year that have a very Hot Topic-y pattern of skulls on them and the cashier felt it necessary to comment. I was compelled to point out that I didn't give a car since I just needed comfortable pants to wear when being naked is socially or fiscally (in terms of my heating bill) unfeasible.

That said, even though people are still completely perplexed by self-checkout at my local Kroger (why? we've had self-checkout for more than 5 years, you dolts), the line to check out still moves faster than enduring a live cashier. Somehow. The only real criticisms I can offer are that when I actually do need someone (to scan coupons or because the system has screwed up once again), it's a nuisance to flag the brainless idiot down who is supposed to be manning them. And there's not enough room for bags if you've filled a full cart (and you can't take bags off because it throws the scale off).

First off, what you said is not making sense. Secondly, why the hell would you hire someone to work for 8 hours if you're only going to give them enough work to fill 2 hours? The problem is that you're a *** moron in this instance, not that the work is too low-skill to be worth paying a virtually non-existent amount of money (after 8 hours, a minimum wage earner is lucky to have just under $50).

Indeed, that seems to be a theme: under-utilizing people. Unless someone is genuinely handicapped and incapable of doing much more than push a mop or pick out the picture of a hamburger on the screen, you're wasting your money and their time. Why do you think teenagers *** around at ***jobs so much? They're completely disengaged unless it's the dinner rush or something.

On the subject of office work, though, that was my first job as a barely-16-year-old. I was building employer databases and handling a variety of other tasks. It simultaneously boggles my mind that employers demand a degree or years of experience for jobs of this variety (especially when the requirements are something like 25 WPM -- I'm pretty sure I can type faster than that with my ***) AND that they still have trouble finding someone able to do the job. I will never fathom how someone can have zero work ethic, but I'm lower-middle class and therefore cursed with pride and dignity and self-respect.

It depends on the value of the new grad to the marketplace, tbh.

Ok lets take science majors for one, specifically non-medical. They are heavily under paid.

I'm sorry but the guy who got his B.S. in Biochemistry working at a pharmaceutical company is contributing a lot more than the guy flipping burgers.

The girl who has a B.S. in Public Health working at Planned Parenthood is contributing more than the sales associate at Abercrombie.

The guy who has his B.S. in Psychology counseling high-school teens is contributing more than the cashier at Wal-mart.

Incidentally, you guys know that Wal-Mart will gleefully hire temporary per-diem labor at a cost of $16+ per hour (not that the labor is getting that -- they typical take home minimum wage or maybe as much as a dollar more) instead of hiring real people. So, first off, the drooling mongoloid *** up your glorious Wal-Mart experience may be either an illegal immigrant or not an actual employee of Wal-Mart AND it still apparently costs them less to have a completely untrained jackass show up for more than double the cost of minimum wage than to employ someone AT minimum wage and know that they know how to do the work to standards.

On a related note, I go to Wal-Mart under extreme protest and do everything in my power to avoid letting so much as a single cent of my money wind up in their hands. Unlike most people, I actually do protest economically, even if it costs me a little more to go to literally any other place.

It makes perfect sense. What part is throwing you off? I don't have 2 hours' worth of work, I have 8 hours' worth. 8 hours of minding the phone and handling small tasks that may present themselves cannot be condensed into 2 hours.

You're still the problem, then. Find them more work or do it yourself.

That is managements job, not a cashier. Cmon man, can't always blame the cashier. Never understand why some people come into stores thinking the cashier is some idiot who can't get a better job.

Pretty sad to see some people in this thread think of the min. wage workers as beneath them. These are people trying to work their way up too, they can't all be six figure armchair executives like all of you.

My union friends are longshoremen ILWU, seamen SUP, marine engineers MEBA, and stagehands ITASE. They all work, or worked, for a living, not loaf.

Also these are all union people from NY (upstate) and NJ (the woods) who work doing carpentry, electricians, and stage hands.
