Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared on 8 March 2014 carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew. The Boeing 777 had left Kuala Lumpur at 00.41 for Beijing Airport but lost contact which air traffic controllers at around 01.22am as it crossed the South China Sea.

There were 227 passengers, including 153 Chinese and 38 Malaysians, according to the manifest. Two were children. All 12 crew members were Malaysian.

Among the Chinese nationals were a delegation of 19 artists who had attended an exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

Two male passengers were travelling on passports stolen from an Austrian and an Italian in Thailand in 2012 and 2013 respectively, Interpol said in a statement. The two passengers were en route to Europe via Beijing.

I heard this morning they found wrecks in the sea and thought it could be it..it wasn't?

Tragic indeed as stuff like this really makes me think twice when traveling.

The sad realization is they are probably all gone. :(

Those were oil slicks. Turned out they were not associated to the plane.

Among them was a 19-member group of prominent artists, who were returning home after an exhibition in the Malaysian capital.

Everyone in the group, led by Hou Bo, was "very famous in China", exhibition organiser Daniel Liau was quoted as saying by the Star newspaper.

Some were the country's leading calligraphy artists, he added.

Another Chinese passenger has been identified as Dr Yuchen Li, a recent doctoral engineering graduate from Cambridge University in England.

The university confirmed that he had recently begun working in a "high-flying geotechnical position" in Beijing.

"Yuchen was a hugely talented and likeable person with a brilliant career ahead of him," a Cambridge spokesman said.

A further eight Chinese nationals as well as 12 Malaysians were employees of America's Freescale Semiconductor company.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic event," the Texas-based company's chief Gregg Lowe said in a statement.

Meanwhile Chinese national Ding Lijun, who had moved to Malaysia about a year ago to work on construction sites, was making his first trip home to Beijing, a relative told US media.

Scary for a plane to just vanish like that. Of course they carry a device which puts them on Radar, they're found deep inside the cockpit of the plane. It's a very weird mystery since the Passengers phones are ringing, but not one of them even answers at all.

You people are sheep. Notice when this happened all the news switched to this from what was going on in Ukraine. Have a terrorist attack happen somewhere to take attention off of whats happening elsewhere its a very old tactic but people buy it all the time. USA could not do crap about Russia invading Ukraine and Russia wants out of this situation without looking weak to the west so what do we do? We make a terrorst attack happen! Anyone who understand how Cell phone networks work know about "beacon" signals the devices exchange with the network on a regular basis. Using networking tricks and a little bit of simple 2D geometry it's possible to triangulate the position of a cell phone easily as long it's on reach of at least three cells of the network.

And even if only one cell is picking a beacon from these phones it should allow the authorities to narrow significantly the area of search.

That was how Pablo Escobar was located and cornered in Colombia back in 1993. I said 1993... lol

Who says that we care more about this than the current situation in Ukraine? Regardless of these events some of us still care about the larger issues in the world and are keeping track of them.

News are fickle regardless. Today over here it was more about the new edition of the Big Brother than anything else happening around the world.

An airplane that has crashed or has been stolen(the proper word eludes me) is still something worth mentioning. And it's not like there's been any huge development in Ukraine, last thing was the vote to have russian as official language in Crimea.

No one here said anything about this being a terrorist attack >.> also am I a sheep if I let this ice cream take my attention off of Ukraine? May I only pay attention to Ukraine?

If the cell phones actually have signals and are ringing (not going straight to voicemail) then they are still functional which would mean they're not at the bottom of the sea.

Is it unreasonable to think that this plane was commandeered by the two with stolen passports and flown at a low altitude, to avoid radar, to some "secret" location and these people are all still alive, possibly captive somewhere?

I was reading about this earlier today.
The US looks weak if they do minimal things/do nothing and
If they did intervene militarily then they would look like warmongers. its a lose lose situation. To top it off, everyone complains that the US should do nothing and keep themselves and let the other countries handle it but look what happened 75 years ago.

....Kinda creepy when you imagine those cell phones of the passengers ringing, but there's nothing but corpses around the phones.

..Imagine one picked up and all that is heard is static and soft ghostly mumbling, omggggggg.

Notice how Ukraine was all in the front news for days! Now its no where to be found. When I say sheep I mean the whole the nation as a whole if you take offense then that's your problem.

Why when I can just stay here and read your ***?

I remember reading about this on a news outlet and right now I can't remember it for the life of me. It was saying something about the blackbox in the cockpit being located using pinging software. There are also a couple factors that could affect the signal of the ping including depth in the ocean if water is involved, and if it is also buried underneath wreckage, AND at the bottom of the ocean. They were saying something about it taking months to even years on end. It really upset me that it would take so long to find 220+ people missing, that seemed to have vanished out of thin air. How do we not have better technology in airplanes in the year 2014 to be able to detect the location of a Boenig, even if it is missing deep deep underneath water.

I also remember reading something (dammit I really need to start remembering my news sources,) that said something before happen to the auto-piloting software that caused an airplane to shoot up into the sky really high. In turn, some engineers had to update all the software within minutes to fix the problem. Sheesh, this whole news story is just weird to me and extremely upsetting.

Also the fact that they say the two EU's weren't on the airplane and that their passports were reported STOLEN, not LOST, but STOLEN. Do they know someone took their passports? Did they maybe have to good of a time in Malaysia and lose it perhaps? Neither was lost, but stolen... hmm.. If I had lost my passport somewhere, I wouldn't automatically assume it was stolen. I'd say I wasn't careful and I dropped it, lost it somewhere. I dunno, maybe I'm thinking too hard.

Passports were stolen in 2012 and 2013.
