The day that South Korea decides to unify the peninsula on its own is the day that North Korea stops existing. Kim Jong can rattle his saber as much as he wants but he rules over they weakest country in Asia. They aren't a threat to anyone. Talk about conservatives being out of touch, wow. Just drop this subject nobody.

Chinese on the other hand... hell, people in China don't speak Mandarin. It's a big problem for the Chinese government that their official language is a long, long, long way from having the prevalence that the official or dominant language in other industrialized countries has.
From the point of view of a foreigner who will only ever interact with businessmen and other educated people in major Chinese cities, Mandarin is still very much worth learning.

In a city like Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen, you are very unlikely to encounter someone who can't communicate in Mandarin. The ones who can't are either very old or have very recently migrated from a less developed area. The younger generations have all learned Mandarin in grade school, even in places like Hong Kong where Cantonese and English are historically more prevalent. I go by the rule of thumb that anyone my age (23) or younger will almost definitely speak Mandarin. :]

Now the farther west you go, the more trouble you're likely to have. In really remote areas like small villages, there might not be anyone who can speak Mandarin. This is also true for some rural areas in the south and east as well. But depending on how well you studied, you can probably still communicate with these people using pencil and paper--the writing system is the same regardless of dialect, barring the difference between simplified and traditional font (汉vs漢,语vs語 for example). No one really goes to west China except for vacation anyway, so your average foreign learner is unlikely to ever have these problems. XD

tl;dr I have a major hardon for Mandarin and I wish more people would give it a try 'cause it's funnnnn! :D

You can't call someone out of touch when you call North Korea "no threat to anyone." They are a nuclear power controlled by an insecure little man (with absolute power). Possible proliferation is a big enough threat alone. If we weren't in South Korea there would be no South Korea; and ergo no Girls Generation and life would suck.

You're a crazy person if you think NK is no threat to anyone. They may not be on the same level as us and we certainly wouldn't lose to them but they have a million man + army with modern weapons and they're quite fanatical. Its estimated that if NK and SK went to war that over a million people would die on the first day.

Edit: They are a nuclear power as well. While it's in contention right now it is thought they may have the capability to hit the west coast with a nuke they do have the capability to hit SK. The only saving grace is that it doesn't look like they have enough material to make too many.

North Korea is merely yet another thing to distract people from the real danger.

You're a crazy person if you believe North Korea will kill anyone first. There are 2 other countries that will keep killing their own citizens and will most likely end them all way before Kim Jong Un finishes his breakfast.

Absolutely delusional Flavin. I mean, are you on drugs? Modern weapons? Million man army? A million casualties on day 1? What kind of war are you fighting?

First of all, and this is beyond common knowledge, wars today are determined by the quality of the Air Force. All preliminary fights involve the Air Force, and North Korea's KPAF is a *** joke, they primarily use, wait for it, Vietnam Era MIG-21s. Beyond obsolete. SK has F-15s and F-16s. That battle would be over in a day, and SK probably wouldn't take any casualties at all. Everything after that would just be South Korea steam rolling with complete Air Superiority. How do you imagine that would go?

as i said earlier. nk has enough arms for one massive burst. the first day i could see a million people dying. the artillery along the dmz alone would obliterate seoul instantly. if they actually (and i don't think they can) get a nuclear explosive out of their own country it will definitely have a big impact.

that being said, their warhead skills are lacking. their missiles break up way too fast and their trigger mechanisms give them like a 60% success rate on detonations. i don't see them as a nuclear threat, and they aren't dumb enough to actually launch an attack on anyone. they couldn't possible win. the huge army they have is of poor underfed conscripts with probably the highest desertion rate in the world.

What about "non-scary" options?
USA or Canada?
USA or Sweden?
USA or Switzerland?
USA or South Korea?
USA or France?

Like the US is doing? No. Would the world be in safer state if the US didn't police in the manner that it is? Arguably yes, as a good portion of the current problems can be traced back to US and UK involvement.
What makes you think any of those countries would do a better job than the US? Not to mention no other country that you listed would be willing to put forth the money it would take to do what we do. France might be the only somewhat viable choice but I'm not sure why you think they would do a better job. Aren't they the one that won't even let women wear Burqas in their country?

I would also completely disagree with you that the world would be a safer place without US intervention. Do you even have any idea what the US is actually involved in doing around the globe or is just paying attention to only the negative things that come to light?

Do you read at all or do you just watch Team America to get your facts on this stuff? You should probably go read some reports put out by the government.

The standing north korean army sits around 1.1 million and south korea is 600,000. North korea has more military equipment as well. South Korea is much more advanced but it is only by the grace of the states involvement.

South Korea also has around 30,000 american soldiers and tech sitting in the nuetral zone with tens of thousands more nearish in japan and Guam.

The issue here though isn't that North Korea would win against America or South Korea but that they aren't a country that you could just walk in and topple.

None of it really matters though. NK Korea is mostly bluster and SK will never invade.

You're biased as ***.

The typical American that thinks he's doing the World a favour, or helping it, by doing all the ***his army (and other similar stuff) is doing is the true cancer of this world and the reason why Americans cannot be taken seriously and are mostly out of touch with what the World really is.

Americans going that route usually never stepped out of their own country or never experienced what the outside world is. There is a difference between being a patriot and being blind as a bat. You fall in category #2.

Notice how the rest of your post just fades into irrelevancy upon reading this sentence? Who really cares how it happened, the fact is, NK is primed to fight a war in 1965, the SK is ready to fight a present day war. Every single piece of technology in North Korea, including the soldiers, is obsolete and would see absolutely no success if deployed. But hey, at least they have more of everything, makes it that much more of a turkey shoot.

You are severely overestimating their artillery capabilities, yeah, they could do some damage to Seoul, the outer suburbs for sure, if they actually get there, and if their rounds actually explode, which is a toss up most of the time. But words like "obliterate" and "500,000 rounds in an hour" and "a million casualties" is just pure propaganda BS. Just like the idea of them being a threat to anyone.

If I was president...

Ridicule and hate would no longer be acceptable forms of entertainment.

Comparing how much someone else failed in life will no longer be an acceptable means of gauging ones own success.

"Love to hate" will no longer be acceptable because there is no love in hating.

The above mentioned changes when in effect will most likely also stop fueling the bully mentality we promote in society and will also end school bullying. (Or at the very least the behavior will no longer be accepted and viewed as "cool" or funny)

It's healthy to be able to laugh at ones self, but when using that person who can do so as entertainment we risk laughing at the person rather than with the person and as a result fail to empathize and relate to their situation and risk gaining a view from above that person when gauging their failure to our success and a superiority complex can result

We'll have to agree to disagree on the resistance training Ono, we can't even look at it from the same point of view and it devolved into anecdotal evidence and bashing awfully quick.

Also I never said America would up and leave everywhere, I'm saying America will never invade another country and occupy it. I'm okay with taking care of business we've started, to an extent. The age of world policing should be over for America. It's not needed, it's costly, and it doesn't earn us good will.

If you think joining an army that doesn't really need you, to sit around and get paid for doing jobs no one needs, is serving your country, then there's something wrong with you.

Just because America stops invading countries and establishing occupancy doesn't mean that all your imaginary villains win either. We can still rain hellfire on any country in the world within hours and with frightening precision.

North Korea can't even feed their people, almost their every action has been a complete joke, and their army couldn't win a war against any remotely modern nation. Large portions of the population are starving, and you think they're some kind of real threat? The second they become openly hostile they'll be ran into the dirt and virtually wiped off the face of the earth no matter how many military vehicles they can poorly photoshop into propaganda.

Canada has laws against news organizations broadcasting lies, why don't we? Be it CNN or Fox if they either willingly lie to the people or consistently fail to get the facts straight, there should be a suitably harsh penalty. Journalists should have some obligation to the truth.

As for the Esperanto thing, I think this video by Tim Morely makes the case for it better than I could. You just have to look past the fact the guy starts out like he needs an 8 ball of coke to bring him down. He articulates the value of teaching it as a learning tool.

For those of you who are multilingual and started learning languages at an early age, good for you, but for us who are monolingual new languages are difficult to acquire. Since a significant portion of Americans are monolingual and cannot afford, at cost of either time or money, the means to educate children sufficiently outside of whats obtained from free public education. From the outside looking in, you seem to have been in a more advantageous position from the outset being in an environment where you were encouraged to be multilingual from an earlier age, and/or having the means to become capable in multiple languages. For example, Seha says it began studying a second language when it was 4, but the average American child doesn't start school until around 6. And good luck trying to tell American families in general to teach their children another language when half the country not only believes English to be the world's lingua franca but that we should only speak MERICAN ENGLISH and goes off on a racist tirade when you broadcast a commercial with multiple languages in it singing a song praising America.

I'm well aware that I currently lack in education on several of these topics, but I have a sense of right and wrong and very rough idea of my goals. I opened myself up to criticism here on purpose because I will face criticism on a higher stage down the road. I believe constructive and oppositional criticism should always play some role in forging your ideas. However, if you're smart enough in a topic to simply call me stupid, you should be smart enough to explain the issue simply and provide support for your stance. There's no need to go super-sleuthing the internet to find my personal email and send me hate mail and a death threat. Though I thought calling me a Muslim-lover was kinda funny in light of my "militant atheist" views.

When I am President.

Borders will be closed and all soldiers will be recalled. If somebody screws with us we have the worlds most powerful Navy and Air-Force. There is no reason for troops to be on the ground shooting at anyone.

If a country wants to trade with us they will pay a hefty tax. The #1 main reason the USA has no jobs is we buy stuff oversea's for cheaper than we can make stuff here. Imagine the USA having to start making everything its citizens need again.

If you can't speaky de ENGLISH you will be deported!! Chance's are if you cant the taxpayers are supporting you in some way. Also, I'd rather pay more people to round up a deport illegals, than pay for the illegals to be here.

Last but not least REPEAL ObamaCare and DEPORT anyone who thought it was a good idea.

When I am President, I will make a bunch of campaign promises, then never get around to actually fulfilling them. If anyone brings it up, I'll blame the opposing party.

I will work with special interest groups. I will find ways to make those same groups a lot of money.

I will seek to destroy any transparency that my administration might have and use sleazy tactics to push my agenda through Congress.

I will work on my golf game. People will let me win because I'm the President.
