But generally it seems simple enough. You're thrust immediately into an interesting storyline with the given plot device and left in a beginner friendly environment with systems like FoV to get you started and on your feet.

Now if only I can make sense of general configuration and what all these strange things on the side mean:

"What the hell does it mean if my arrows are made of ash wood rather than maple or oak?"

"What attribute does Piety apply to or affect?"

etc. etc. etc.

Lol I can tell you if you want? or would you prefer to find out on your own?

Oh just tell me. I already am resolved to simply "try out" XIV while it's within it's free trial and to get my hermes shoes; then it's back to XI until I am done with it and get better comp hardware.

Oh, that arrow thing makes sense and is pretty cool.
Piety is magic acc while int is still potency/magic attack power?

Also, I was looking at my equipment and was rather confused at how it told me of what the base material composition was or something to that effect. I'm sure it was something relevant to crafters; I have no idea.

STR = Physical damage
VIT = HP and Base Defence
DEX = Physical Accuracy
INT = Magical Damage
MND = MP
PTY = Macc

The material is basically relevant to crafters and to you if you want to repair your own gear on the fly instead of going to an NPC.

I like how there is a general balance between the three melee based attributes and magic based ones. Rather than stacking heavily in one for a specific task like in XI, it'll be vital to have all three in mind.

Also: What the heck is that element chart mean?

Ditto. Can't do any more BCNMs until my stupid refresh scroll sells. Got no more mules to toss them on, and they're deflating in price quickly.

Also nobody wants to do KSNMs /sadface
Gonna see if I can convince some linkshells to lowman KS99 for those still needing their black belt items.

So until then I'm gonna poke XIV beta with a stick...
That is once their servers are back up D:

Yes, but each clan of each race and each class had a different setup and number value to each element, and each level up gave you elemental points to allocate in any given element. If only I knew what it meant and what their values represented.

When you put a point into an element you are gaining a small resistance AND adding a small amount of that element to your weapon.

So say you heavily favoured fire? put every point into it, by the end of the game you'd be taking significantly less fire damage and doing significantly more damage with your weapon against ice foes.

The good thing about element point allotment is that you will never heal or do less damage to an enemy due to it, it's all positive.

Your third paragraph erased any worries I had :D
Does this apply to magic as well as physical attacks?
Would be nice to have increased potency in fire spells since anything remotely like a black mage in my eyes just screams pyro :3

Yes you will lol. Your fire spells will do more damage if you favoured fire.

It's basically like magic potency merits. In fact think of the entire level up system as a merit system for every level lol. It's basically allowing you to shape your character into the role you want.

There are ways to re-roll points but it costs skill points to do so.

For example if you click re-assign you will take 2 points off every stat and gain 6 points to allot back into stats.

Alternatively there are permanent abilities you can buy with guild marks which have things like

10 PTY > STR

When you had that equipped, ten of your piety points would instead be put in your STR until you unequipped the ability.

There are also other abilities you can buy with guild marks an example is:

"Dmg taken -10%" and "Block time +15%"

You can freely equip and unequip these once purchased as long as you have the ability points to set them.

Sounds BLUish now.
I kinda like that, so you can balance and switch things up as your need is changed according to situation.

Ability points sound like something accumulated via several battles and are consumable. Or are they something that stack up to a certain value based on your level like in IX?

Pretty much. There is a penalty for reassigning points permanently, but not too much.

You get Guild marks by doing special guild leves for whatever guild you want marks from. So for example there may be a conjurer mission to kill a certain amount of enemies in a certain way, completing it would earn 3k~ leves to buy abilities from the guild.

What I like is the fact they are permanent. Once you've got them you've got them. Means there's a sense of completion :D

Exactly like IX's system.

As your class rank goes up the amount of ability points goes up, All the abilities I've got atm cost 2 or 3 to set.

You can also set the ability of another class as an enhancement to whatever class you play.

For example if you wanted to tank, you could level up Pugilist get the ability accomplice and then set it when you play gladiator and be able to steal allies enmity.

So that way you can go and earn your special abilities related to a specific class, but after you've learned it, it's forever yours to utilize as needed? I like this more and more as I learn; just wish I could put it together in game a little easier lol.

That's it exactly lol. It's basically around making the perfect build for yourself.

As a Gladiator you could a marauders blood bath and then be gaining HP as you hit the enemy ^^

Good idea. But I love how this system revolves around centralized customization of your own character rather than "right way, wrong way" gear setups like in XI.

Pretty much why I think the game has so much potential lol. I can imagine some of the high level builds being really complex with ability bars full :D

Then you get into the entire battle regimen thing which I've just learned about.
