I just want to be able to work in my pajamas. That's all I ask.

My current client insists on video calls for meetings, which means I am once again subject to the tyranny of shirts.

Pants, as always, are absolutely optional.
Who does that?! Video calls? Consider all the innocent bandwidth being consumed!

That's some serious vanity, insecurity, and/or trust issues right there.

Just my opinion, which is worth squat, but still.

I've given up. All the people with kids don't seem to care; why should I when I don't even have a horse in this race!?

I've got a job to do, too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Remo, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that.

Remotional Ramyrez aka Remo "Damptowel" McFeely the jimmies rustled steam powered perpetual dampness machine.

Despite all the dampness his balls shriveled up like raisins in the hot sun and dropped right off his body one day at work... Only the cleaning lady at his office noticed them... and, mistaking them for rat droppings, immediately called the exterminator....

Unable to sire any hideously emo offspring of his own the world was spared the Child of Darkness Dampness as prophesied in the third book of the Mennonite new testament "The Gospel According to Flavin" and thus the apocalypse was averted...

The good people of NI rejoiced in saying "Meshi is our King and Altana is our goddess... may their twin lights of love and justice always dispel the dank dampness, amen"

Eh.
Video (conference) calls have been more useful in my opinion than audio calls. For communicating complex information, my experience is that in person > video > voice.
Now, that's assuming you have video conferencing capabilities worth a damn, and aren't constantly having to fight the IT nightmare to get it to work.

But I've had more issues (drop outs, noise, etc) working with simple phone teleconferencing in the US than videoconferencing with the same companies.

Nope. Still there. I'll spare you photographic evidence though. You'll just have to take my word on it.

I'm generally not a fan of telephone calls period, and find that adding video doesn't really improve the experience.

to me all meetings are a waste of time... if anyone understood what I was talking about they wouldn't have needed to hire me in the first place and explaining it to someone that doesn't understand takes twice as long as completing the work... which is why we charge the same hourly rate either way...

Depends on the client. Some just want you to do the work, based on you being the expert, and want you to deliver per the contract. It's generally pretty well defined, and has little non-recurring engineering to do. Areas where it is new product development, a stupid amount of time is spent trying to elucidate what they actually wish to do, and then scaling that to what is feasible within the physical and financial constraints.

It's gotten to the point that I just need to make a sign with this on it:
"Is it possible to do this? It isn't violating any known physical laws. But it isn't feasible within the constraints you have defined. Fix those first."

And just pull it out when needed.
