Men's Health article I pulled up says $300-$600 for a basic suit of acceptable quality.
Given these people make money through advertising brand-name suits, I'd say closer to the $300 is reasonable if you hit a Men's Warehouse or Burlington Coat Factory or your local equivalent.
If you've got an Outlet Mall near you with factory direct stores, I suggest hitting up a Van Heusen or Haggar factory store. You can get a good discount off of retail and get a $500-$600 range suit for $250-$400.
Start talking big names you're looking $800-$1k

I paid about 700 for the last suit I bought but I was comp'd 600 so I spent another 300 on shoes, socks and ties. My wife was like wtf. I was like I still save 600 :)

I think you could easily do something in that range at a department store (Penny's, Macy's, etc. Or the aforementioned outlets) if you play your cards right. You just might have to drop another small wad to get it adjusted a bit if you want it to be just right unless you're absolutely the picture of average build.
