I've known some really good people in the construction industry, so I don't want to make blanket statements, but while the specialized trade workers are generally pretty good, a lot of the "general duty" workers pulled off the street by general contractors aren't the most fun people to work with if you enjoy conversation that isn't focused on the lowest common denominators of society.
