perl, but I don't consider that programming

Have you done anything with the more advanced and indepth perl stuff? Moose, etc? It's every bit a full featured language, despite its reputation, and I find it indispensable for a lot of daily tasks.
Yeah you're right on the in depth stuff. I use it for payment processing, just simple stuff. I tend to forget how hardcore it actually is when you're doing more than processing credit card transactions.

Very novice. The only real exposure would be from boyfriends or boys who are friends while obliging my curiosity while they were in on C languages and Java.

What would be segue into programming apps?

So, if you want to write phone apps, you have three options:

Objective C/Swift for iOS
Java for Android
some "write once, cross-compile everywhere" solution like Xamarin

In theory, anything that can run on the JVM can run on Android, which opens up things like Scala and JRuby. Do you have a Mac? Because doing iOS dev is pretty rough without one.
Sounds like Java might be the way to go for her.

I thought my idea was pretty logical actually, wasn't trolling or trying to suggest insanity.

Oh. I know. It's gone from serious to hamming it up. I just thought there were a few comically golden comments in there.

Rooks, have a seat my friend.

*pulls out a bar stool and pours some whiskey in a glass*

There is an easy solution to your problem. All you must do is declare yourself king of AH, create whatever badges you wish and give them to who you decide deserves them, and if anyone complains give 'em the ole' "I'm the king and you're just a peasant who is behind on taxes. Now pay up or be removed!" speech.

*pours another whiskey and slams it back*

I'm glad we could have this conversation.

*sigh* Badges were mentioned about a week or so ago in LS in XIV, and while I stayed out of the conversation, I did point out to Drac that the badge idea isn't exactly a good idea mainly because if you do it for one contest, any schmuck who decides to make a thread and call it a contest will demand a badge. That's done and decided though.

I'd suggest for starters make badges either smaller or, more ideally, allow users who earn them to replace their flag with one of the badges they have earned. The current placement looks cluttered and knowing Scragg, I'm surprised he'd approve of it if he even cares. Make a "badge" tab under profiles to house all the badges a user has earned, allow them to display one, like titles in FFXIV.

Make scripts apply badges as they are earned or you're gonna have a bad time.

Depending on the contest, I might not even say no! The point of them (from my perspective, anyway) is to foster community involvement. Anything that encourages that at least gets my consideration.

Yeah, that should be fixed in next week's patch.

Already written a tool for applying them, but my real vision for them is that they're rare enough to not need a pile of automation.

You said it yourself; forum users are a minority, Scragg seems to see the forum as just a minor part of AH. Which, for AH, it is. AH has utilities that XIVpro does not and possibly never will which means a strong community is very important, more so post-XI. Remember, for just about every utility you add for XIVpro, there is already a site out there that people know and are recommending. If you want a strong community, you are going to have to bring the toxicity down to a level that encourages participation.

But yes, cleaning up the patches of toxicity was one of my main goals as a moderator, and that hasn't changed.

I suggested a contest to Rooks but I dunno if anyone would join in lol

A weekly (or biweekly) writing contest (which would be XI/XIV themed or not) where you write a short story and the best one that week wins

Since we already have a drawing one (MS Paint) and everyone who wanted to could join in

I also can't write anything like that >.>

Just an idea, I remembered that my friend joins contests like that every now and then but they have to write like 200 pages in a few months (this could be just a chapter or less)
