Mmmm...My brother and I learned the hard way about complaining about receiving underwear/socks for a gift, granted we didn't know that the elderly German side of the family habitually tucked away money in savings accounts for our generation.

Moral of the story, you don't *** about gifts with people who were born/grew up/raised your parents during the Weimar Republic/WWII/reconstruction.

You catch heat from grandparents who were born/grew up during the American Depression, for that matter.

EDIT: Why, page? WHY?!?

Oh I never complained about the socks, sure would have liked something more original but I'm aware gifts are an act of generousity and not something due even if it's your bday.

Meanwhile though the other uncle...
"Happy bday little miss! *sits me on the couch* It's time we talk about compassion."
"Merry xmas! *couch* Do you ever meditate about the purpose of life?"

Yeah. You generally didn't complain about the clothes if you wanted the good stuff. *** and you don't get any of it. Though that was more the parents than the grandparents. My grandmothers who lived through the depression tended to be more about getting meaningful gifts than pragmatic ones.

...oddly, these days, I really like new socks.

Except the socks I buy or that my wife buys for me are a far cry from bulk packs of Fruit of the Loom white tube socks.

You learn quickly! LOL!

The beau now has a critical dress sock fascination. He's an easy buy. Dress socks with lobsters, Darth Vader, video game themes, skull and bones, crazy-colored argyle or stripes (that's my bag, too, for the winter), etc.

I am, apparently, tough to buy for. Of course, this is according to my wife, who has never had to shop for herself.

I dislike dress socks in general. I like comfortable new socks though. the Smartwool socks that Duluth sells are really great.

It's harder to be decisive about things that you want, I think. I still just default to money and gift cards. I think everyone is harder to buy for as they get older.

Nothing more satisfying than fresh, out-of-the-package socks.

God! We're so lame! LOL!

EDIT: Are you two still mulling over purchasing a house? That makes it easier to think of the things you want.

you ungrateful ***!

Go do what the youngens are and start an amazon wishlist then you're easy to shop for or just tell em.

I got my cousin a baby's onesie while he waits to find out if he's the father or not... He didn't think it was as funny as I did... but hey that's what you get for pickin' some random up in a bar and not wrapping it first...

yeah my kids are old now (16 & 21) so that's what they get... that and steam cards.

I miss buying them toys like the giant motorized ferris wheel..k'nex iirc....even though that toy did start a huge fight when the younger one waited for the older one to finish it and then wrecked it.

Nah. We're definitely doing so. We're getting everything in order, researching what first-time homebuyer stuff is available where we'll be buying, etc. Figuring out what we can afford, what we will and won't compromise on our list of wants in a house. Things like that. We've got a pretty solid idea on the latter.

It's a matter of timing now. Our lease is up in March, and given our landlord has units he's been unable to fill recently I doubt we'll be able to break lease very easily, so we're working on paying as little "double rent" as possible.

But yeah, the past few years Christmas has been about exchanging clothing and neat little knickknacks. We've not done anything big for a few years because, frankly, it had been turning into a bit of a spending arms race.

I almost exclusively wear dress socks and dress pants, since they're so comfortable and lightweight plus stylish, can enhance any basic shirt/jacket etc. that's too bad ramy

I wouldn't wear pants ever if society weren't so damned rigid.

Shorts, kilts, or NOTHING.

I largely stick to pants like these for work.

Well, see, the thing is, we share pretty much all of our interests, so it becomes a matter of outmaneuvering the other person in getting the most fun gift that applies the most to that person without being a thing for "us".

It's quite a fun game sometimes.

But it's not easy.

Literally any family member could buy me Lego right now and I'd be as happy as I ever was with them. Such fun can be had.

Can't wait for the K'nex era of dexterity. Duplos ain't cuttin' it right now.

dude that thing was six feet tall and had like 10,000 pieces in it and it took him forever to put together... he was so proud when he got it working... I think we played with it for an hour or two after he finished... then we went to bed.

and then his kid brother dismantled it.

I can't repeat any of the words the older brother screamed the next morning but i'm sure you can guess what they all were....

There's a lot of great reasons to work from home, but I'd be lying if I said "no pants" wasn't pretty high on the list.

I was surprised to see Nautica was still alive and kicking at an outlet mall last year. J-crew and Banana Republic are the ones I hit up for non-casual.

It's not for everyone, so I get why some employers are concerned. You need to be pretty self-motivated to do well at it, and set real boundaries for yourself. I've got a half dozen rules that I follow, and if I start slacking on one of them it's very noticeable in my output.
