you drop super cold ice water into absinthe to give it that smokey green color. usually it's just a darker color. people usually put a sugar cube and the ice water in when they make it.
that contraption has ice melting so you can hit one of the droppers to drip a drop down to plop on your sip, and it drips over the sugar cube to melt it in.

tbh i enjoy drinking absinthe, but the whole supposed effects are definitely not there. it's essentially a super strong jager. if you like drinking 150ish proof black licorice tasting booze, go for it. we always lit it, put out the flame, and down the hatch. makes you nice and warm. perfect for the christmas.
speaking of cask strength scotch...

The main problem with absinthe is you can't get the good stuff in the states. Egg Nog is the same way unless you crush the nutmeg and sprinkle it in yourself. Hallucinate Egg Nogg is the best.

Absinthe is highly overrated. It's entire reputation is derrived from the poor artists who drank it in Europe, and instead of admitting they were just miserable and trying to get blasted on cheap, disgusting booze (which is what absinthe was at the time), they made up the whole hallucinogenic ingredient thing and said it helped inspire their art/music/etc.
The perfect crossroads of affordability and quality.
I think absinthe is pretty awesome. I had it in an underground club in London several years ago. They only sell you two shots per night....per club.
I didn't have a hangover the next day and I had a lot of fun.

Well, as described above, I'm pretty sure modern-day absinthe is just green, ultra-high-proof sambuca. It's not the bathtub grog it was when it picked up it's reputation as the hallucinogenic drink of the artistic free spirits.

The bottom line is that for me, when it comes right down to it, I'm with Frank Sinatra.
Unless something else I like is on sale that week at the state store, Jack Daniels is going to get the nod. It's great neat or on ice, and it's not so expensive that you feel bad for throwing it in a glass with cola.

Not drinking is a perfectly acceptable choice in life. I feel you miss out on the positives of responsible drinking, but you certainly are able to skirt any and all related negative effects, of which there certainly are (potentially) many. For some people it's wise on many levels not to drink at all.
The only thing I dislike are when people get preachy about their abstinence from alcohol. Especially when they're a reformed alcoholic, because they seem to think that because they were irresponsible or over-indulgent and had to give it up, that you clearly should give it up to.

I have a buddy that's a 12 stepper and he is difficult to be around. I don't imbibe when I hang out with him... Which isn't very often, but yeah I don't want to hear it. save it for the meetings preachy ladouche

I only really drink when I want to get some kind of buzz going on but it's not something I'd do because I thought the stuff tasted good.
