I worked 75 hours a few weeks ago. Overtime is awesome. I'm going for ~65-70 this week.

Edit: The week before that I did 60 hours in 4 days.

what do you do anyways?
SharePoint Engineer

Right now I manage our development environment. 7 physical servers running over 80 virtual servers. My current project is rebuilding and migrating our Team Foundation Server boxes into one centralized location.

We had our entire network go down, so I've had plenty of boxes to restore and rebuild. I had to recreate our domain and everything. Fortunately, a majority of the data was retained. Server farms aren't playing nice since the restore so they're being mostly rebuilt.

Do you like Sharepoint or does it make you want to kill yourself? The only thing I found useful about it was how well it tracked document revisions. Aside from that(such as permissions to documents) it made me nuts and I just defaulted to managing AD groups for those kinds of privileges.

And it doesn't help that it only functioned properly in IE, the most virus prone browser on Earth.

1. Company buys license for SharePoint.
2. Company has to hire higher paid IT people to manage SharePoint.
3. Company hires more IT people to handle viruses.

Always seemed like a waste of money to me.

I got bored today while testing out some color mixing for my zombie facemask. So after failing the colors I deiced to make a face.

It ended up a lot creepier than I had thought it would...

If properly managed, it makes a great collaboration tool. We also have custom applications running on ours that gives it even more functionality.

We don't have an issue with IE and viruses. SharePoint only has issues in FireFox if you're CAC enabled. The development boxes (which are username/pass) don't have any problems.

Edit: As far as AD permissions vs SharePoint built in groups goes, it depends on the scale of your deployment and number of users. We use the builtin mostly. AD is pretty much just for the admin permissions since it makes it easier to add/remove people that come and go.

ah, ours likely wasn't properly managed. There were multiple different SharePoint admins and depending on the department you'd talk to each one thought of running it a different way. So having to design apps around it wasn't much fun because I'd basically have to do it differently for each department. :/

It was a medium sized business with maybe a couple thousand people so people would come and go all the time. The company had already set up and managed AD groups before and after moving to SharePoint, but still many departments started to try to manage SharePoint groups as well - leading to a massive headache.

Good to know that it isn't always a nightmare.

I was introduced to SharePoint as a Marine. It wasn't much fun, because I dealt with a lot of officers stuck in their ways. I also had no clue what I was doing, but because I knew how to spell SharePoint I was the most knowledgeable one there. I got thrown into it headfirst.

Anyway, we have a central SharePoint team (20+) divided into several smaller teams (content, engineering, developers, support). Our project manager and government lead are pretty good at listening to our suggestions, and letting us handle most of the governance details. They just handle the politics and making the people who make the final decisions understand why we're doing the things we do. Our team is *** incredible. Very cohesive. I dread the day this contract runs out, and I have to find a job somewhere else.

Almost every person who has quit for a new job has asked to come back within a couple months.
