Yet I have never viewed authority as something that should have specifically gone to me because of who I was or because I wanted it; the authority of leadership had so often drifted to me because the people around me knew that I was willing to go the extra mile for them and to work unstoppably until the task was done right. I have been a leader so often in my life because I am a leader who acts for his people, not for the sake of being a leader. I’m the sort of leader that would never tell someone to clean the floor unless I had already been down on my knees and scrubbing it first.
