I've had FFXI installed for over a year now on this laptop and this is the first time I've had this problem. Ever. For some reason the character models won't show. Not even the chocobos or avatars.
I recently did an update for my Intel HD 3000 graphics driver (non-optional graphics card, it's in my laptop) and now the character models won't show.
I tried re-installing the entire game and expansions and it still won't work.
I really don't know what to do at this point. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Oh, and since it worked for you prior to the driver update, have you attempted to roll back your drivers?

I've contacted SE EU. I'm hoping to get an email soon, if not I'll roll it back and see what happens.

I had this problem with my laptop. Like tex said you need to go into settings/device manager/display adapters/double click intel hd graphics 3000/on tabs up top click driver/update driver/let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer/then double click intel(R) HD graphics family (Microsoft corporation - WDDM 1.2) and all should be fixed. That is until your laptop runs it's automated maintenance and puts it back to hd3000 driver. So before you play check your driver to make sure its on the right one. And that concludes the lesson for the day.

I fixed the problem. All I had to do was roll back the driver. I don't think Intel graphics cards have been updated to play FFXI, especially from what I've read around.
Cheers though.

So for those of you whose drivers are working, what version are they? I don't have the option to install a working driver as there are only 2 listed in the menus, one that I have installed and one that is a generic driver.

My driver version is 9.17.10.3062

While it's not really critical as I don't have time to play much on my laptop, I do like having a back up as well as the option to play if I want to.

I found this today on Intel's website and it does work 100%.
Hope it works for you as well!

32. Re: Intel HD 4000 and FFXI

nic Apr 3, 2013 8:12 AM (in response to donannis)
Greetings everyone! I have good news. If you are an HD 4000 user still experiencing the issues with FFXI* - please refer to the following link for the latest driver information; http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-19855

The new driver is out, and you should be fixed. Feel free to continue discussion in this thread or the one I posted above if the issue for some reason isn't resolved.

Thanks,
-Nic

I just had to refresh my 4 month old Windows 8 laptop and, after a fresh installation, this problem has returned for me as well.
My problem is I have Intel HD 4000 and a Radeon HD7670M.
Given Intel finally addressed this issue, I;m assuming the latter is to blame for my invisible character models.
Where I need help is addressing the issue with the Radeon card. This is what I get when I try to use AMD's updater. I'm assuming from this that they expect my laptop's manufacturer, Samsung, to send me updates.
My SW updater has been doing that, but it's such a limited, ease-of-use application, you can't get any info on what the updates are other than being "graphics updates".
This is really stressing me out now. If I enforce WDDM drivers, AMD's CCC will go ballistic like last time and the driver will crash every day.
