I Miss The Old XI
Yeah the "good ol days" were "fun"... So are these "Good ol days", yeah the 75 days were more challenging but I remember ALOT of hours spent in endgame and leveling up. I have less time on my hands to play anymore since the 75 days, glad ffxi has moved on...
Fenrir.Yuriki said: » I'm a bit on the fence about this, mainly because I had very good experiences "back in the day," although it was definitely more time consuming. Once thing I really can't relate to, however, is "waiting 6 hours for a party." I don't ever remember waiting 6 hours for a party. Ever. One of my first 75s was DRG. When the DRG 2 hr was "call wyvern." Can't get a party invite? Make one. The most I ever waited was an hour, and I've waited longer for VW. But still, the faster game play of this age is a lot more enjoyable, sometimes. They really SHOULD have a 75 server. I'm sure someone has their own 75 FFXI server somewhere. Google it. It's been said/proposed before but, maybe make Abyssea minimum level 75? Like i enjoy the fast leveling also but ***, 30 has no place out there.. and if we're all so worried about RMTs, raising the requirement for it would cut that avenue off for them. What does it matter if someone levels to 99 in a day? With all the information out there readily available for each job, someone who's properly motivated can be proficient in any role within hours.
And the RMT cleavers are pretty much gone, at least on Cerberus. Boo. On a serious note, I sometimes spend months researching a job, collecting gear sets, and figuring out what content I will be using it for before I even begin skilling up. So the "you need to xp to learn a job" argument holds zero water for me.
Plenty of 75s didn't know ***-all about their jobs. It's not based on time, it's based on effort, knowledge, and the ability to apply.
People have been programmed to burn the past and accept the future. I know how you feel about the old ffxi, and I feel the way about just about every game from card, table top, to video. The new thing is speed; if it takes more than a minute it’s too long.
Even companies are releasing direly unfinished games. GW2 and D3 are perfect long anticipated titles that had great success on launch but swiftly began to die off as content was too fast and not vast enough to hold any one for a long period of time. My main issue with FFXI isn’t the newly added speed but the consumerism I feel when there is a new update. I remember wearing my farmed bounding boots from lvl 7 dragoon to 75 until I was able to upgrade them. Now no item you get is permanent. Even the legendary weapons will need upgrades that take an excessive amount of time for a miniscule return. I was considering coming back, having all jobs 99 and geared this wouldn’t put me far behind; but the grueling lucky-drop instance based events I would have to endure to bring all them back up to par just is not worth my time any more. As time goes on people will simply say deal with it and let the companies alter and abolish things that are both loved and hated. In time all will belong to the targeted audience that is not me, or anyone who agrees with this. For those of you who contest this and post derogatory comments, congratulations, you have won. You are the targeted audience And for all the “Wall of text” people, you too are the targeted audience. Patience is a virtue; but I am afraid this world has fallen to darkness and knows no virtues. yeah its lame now, getting a relic doesnt mean ur good anymore. everyone has one.

I still don't understand. How can speed be the problem? Why is there such a desire to be the same as everyone else? It seems like so many people who pine for the old days don't want their experience to be one thing, they want everyone's experience to be one thing. It has to be that... because again, It's so baffling! Valefor.Lovestospoon said: » yeah its lame now, getting a relic doesnt mean ur good anymore. everyone has one. Its like missing your ex gf. You only miss her cause you have no pictures of her setting your dog on fire. Valefor.Rancor said: » People have been programmed to burn the past and accept the future. Just as people cling to the past on the fumes of nostalgia that cloud the mind from reality. See? I too can make broad assertions. FFXI back in the day was a frustrating mess that most of accustomed ourselves to because either we didn't know better, had friends that pulled us along or just enjoyed being tenacious little cockroaches that refuse to roll over and die no matter how hard Tanaka whipped out the Raid. Needing 12hours just to gain ONE level wasn't hardcore, it was a lifesucking mess that did customers a huge disservice by being unreasonable by ANY standard. And that's if you could get a party which if you weren't X,Y,Z fad job was another adventure entirely: Final Fantasy XI: Chains of my Job Class. Mom gave me 4hours to play FFXI tonight! YAY! Too bad it takes an hour to get out to camp, an hour to LFP, an hour to flail around in my own feces wiping to bad pulls and shitty players then to enjoy my last hour begging for a raise when the party breaks because the tank/refresher rightfully left. While I feel you are right that going "too fast" is a bad thing, that doesn't excuse FFXIs glacial pace regarding doing anything that shackled this game to the far fringes of the hardcore maniacs for years. As a wise man once told me "BALANCE?" Quote: My main issue with FFXI isn’t the newly added speed but the consumerism I feel when there is a new update. I have my share of fond memories and I have many more of the worst ***that humanity could extrude from its collective *** in the form of things like Sandworm, Dark Ixion, Fafnir, Salvage and Dynamis. 6hour camps where nothing pops, 7hour Ixion hunts because a shell wiped and it fled into campaign battle, Fafnir being stolen and given to another shell because the system rewarded cutthroat behavior or going 0/250 on QQTH because Tanaka feels that balance should be wanting to murder yourself, your friends, your family and your coworkers. Shall we trade more stories? There was this one time at Pallas that some RMT got charmed and I killed them with my friends.... Fallen to the darkness? I'm pretty sure I told the Shadow Lord to leave the lights on in Castle Zvahl... Rightfully so, MMOs have started to treat consumers like people who have other things to do other than slave away at the virtual gulag they have set up for you to play. While you and I may have had fun in the old FFXI, the bottom line was that we only appreciated such things because we adapted to our misery. While there is something to be said about too much instant gratification, your attempt to paint FFXI into some "Golden Age" of MMOs is a delusion that ejects the facts for the warm glow of nostalgia. There was an epic fail project where some guys tried to recreate the game using dats, think that is as close as it got to private servers. Seriously unnecessarily long post, but hope you feel better for getting that off your chest!! "Back in the day", or so they say, I only stuck to one job.. RDM.
Then it was SCH. That was it. I went from SAM to PLD, but ended quitting those out of sheer boredom. Two jobs I was interested in. After Abyssea, those two jobs were put on the back burner as I leveled SMN, WHM, DNC, THF and even DRG. I've experienced more fun playing those jobs, hell, even EXPING with those jobs than I EVER had "back in the day". These new jobs I had were possible to use because of the new leveling system and not having to sit there lfg for hours upon hours with no avail.. hell, that's why my DRG stayed at 65 before Abyssea came out. NO ONE WANTED TO PARTY WITH ME. I got sick of soloing Colibri and quit. I do agree that the players are a lot different now, ranging from the "I got all this stuff in two months so I'm better than you automatically" to the "I've been playing since release and what I say is right automatically." and everything in between. Automatically. The point I'm making is: This game is what you make of it, back then and even now. Even after quitting I'm on this site every day, replying posts and talking with friends on Skype/Vent about the new stuff. If you wanna old school Colibri party.. make one. I'm sure others will go along with you just to get that feeling of "back in the day" again. As for if we as a community would ever want to go back..? No. Not really. We just hold the memories of that time even closer and more dear as we journey ahead to what awaits us. ...and now, bacon jerky awaits. This day just got more awesome. They had gotten real far in it. it had zones, npcs, just no quests, missions, monsters or battle system or did they eventually add NM's? i don't remember much of it. Some people tried to revive the work in secret but i dunno how well that panned out. if anybody remembers that raving guy about missing old FFXI, someone give him this number
Everyone remembers that one party that was awesome, that didn't disband within 30 minutes of you getting to camp, the tank was good, the healer was alert, it had a rdm that didn't melee and a blm that never missed a MB.
For some reason that one party or few parties that were like that (they were *** rare, don't lie) make you forget the hours of being flagged up in Jeuno. Afraid to go afk because you would miss a /tell, afraid to zone because you would miss a /tell. Then three hours after you fall asleep at your desk out of bordom, you missed a /tell. Also, random assortment of things you easily forget in the face of nostalgia. I have enjoyed the evolution of FFXI, it's why I come back from time to time. I don't want it to be the FFXI it was 5 years ago, although I loved that game too. I dont even miss the current FFXI, much less it taking 5 months to level a job.
nin+sam or nin+war/blm/blm/rdm/brd for mbx5! was the best party in the tree when you can do distortion chain back in the days, but *** the long exp grinding. If don't mean jack ***skill wise if you level it the hard way or leech your way to 99 in 2 days. If you suck you'll always suck.
Well i prefer the old skool way, party of 6 grinding away wiping and skilling up slowly. Tank DD and support/healing . Back then people were geared to the level not naked /half naked in alliance.

They didn't get very far in at all, they just spent a long time on it (years) and it would never have worked, they were trying to rebuild the game from scratch without knowing half the stuff that we still don't know (drop rates etc). It was nowhere near the point of being playble, nowhere near! |
