I need advice on controlling the jug pets as they will never listen to me and its making it incredibly difficult and costly. When i tell it to attack something it turns to something else almost immediately and seems to do a 1 1 1 2 2 2 3 3 3 hit motion cycling through each target once rather than killing certain threats first.

Can anyone tell me if im doing something wrong or if theres a way to have a pet lock on to a target etc please?

Your pets stubbornness to obey its master is the bane of a Beastmaster's existence.

In other words no, how hate works, your pet will always go rampant and attack whatever the hell it wants regardless of what you want it to do.

Only way to stop it is to avoid links or fighting multiple enemies at once. Fight command spam is the only way to get it to somewhat prioritize but it's still gonna attack whatever it wants most of the time.

I was always under the impression that the pet would attack whatever mob hit it last...

Well, it's barance. SMN and PUP can make their pets focus on a mob, but BST's pet is beefier. SMN pet will defend its master, but "Assault" drops invis, and bloodpacts drop sneak. And so on.

Unfortunately BST pets have their own hate list, and indeed it can be very frustrating.

You can erase all target foes' hate from your pet by using the "heel" command, unfortunately most of the time this does not help because sending your pet in once more will often result in the same thing happening again. This is useful however, if you can successfully sleep (or otherwise distract targets from attacking your pet for that matter); by using "heel" -> sleeping targets -> "fight", your pet will only attack the target you specified.
