I'm in the mood to watch something scary, but my problem is just about every scary movie I watch is the opposite.

I don't find it scary, I find it more of a joke of how they try to get you into a scare.

Jump scares aren't really even a thing for me anymore while watching a movie.

Playing a game that is meant to be scary is the opposite, I can be scared by them easily to the point where I don't want to go forward. A movie just isn't the same to me, at least the ones I try to watch.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows of any really scary movies. Something that isn't just a cookie cutter of something else that has been done a thousand times, a good original and worth watching.

the only one I can think off the top of my head is
The Fouth Kind (mainly for the weird creepyness factor)

My girlfriend and I watch tons of horror movies on netflix. Its one of the few types we both like. Some of our favorites that stuck out to us: Grave Encounters, about a blair witch project kinda move were a crew of ghost hunters for a show go to an asylum and get trapped. The Shrine is about a journalist who goes to this place in Europe and comes across some kind of cult, its got a pretty good twist in it. If I can think of any more ill let you know

I've been trying to find scary movies for a while also, but looking at Netflix when I asked for suggestions for "Scary" they provided Pirates of the Caribbean and Van Helsing. So good luck...

IT (stephen king).

I really like that one. The movie itself is not "scary" necessarily, but the whole concept for the story can be really creepy/frightening.

The book of course is more intense.

Also Tim Curry is awesome...
He does a good bad guy... I also liked him in Legend.

Aside from the silly/B-grade horror movies to watch for humour, I find the scariest are off-beat ones (things that feature identifiable characters that are set in eerie and deceptively-believable situations.)

Ones that I like, aside from the Japanese or Korean ones mentioned previously are things like Darkness, Repulsion, or even that recent Antichrist film. I find that a lot of these are 'scary' in the sense that suspension of disbelief of what otherwise would be a silly notion (deadly videotapes?) is still executed believably due to the acting chops of film crew, leaving lingering images days and weeks after watching the movies. ;_;

As far as truly scary, off the top Wind Chill comes to mind. I saw it years back and it left an impression.

About to start my shift but I'll be giving this some thought, may have some better suggestions when I get home.

Looking forward to other's choices as well. I watch everything when it comes to Horror but some things slip through the cracks.

Old. Movie is old news. (No offence.) May as well have said 'Versus' or 'Battle Royale'. Even though "Kitty-kitty-kitty," or whatever it was she uttered during the needle scene made me shiver, I don't think it was the worst of the worst.

I've always thought that the horrors with a religious tick to it were the scariest, but that just may be me. Possession and hauntings have always hit me to the core, but even horror preferences are a subjective field. (Thus the "no offence" intended to Pleebo.)

I hate to say it, but some good, old Rob Zombie horror does the body good (bad?). The psychological impact of either or is a little overwhelming. The first time I experience of 'House of 1000 Corpses' still sticks with me, especially the end.

You should watch 'American Horror Story'! Good Stuff!!! And some Zachary Quinto!

PS: The new Hitchcock bio flick?!? Anyone? Anyone?

Pulse was a great movie. It's one of those ones I've watched many times but I still don't fully understand everything. The whole feeling of loneliness it leaves you with is terrifying though.

I would suggest to you A Tale of Two Sisters. It's a Korean movie. It took a few viewings for me to fully get it as well. There are a few jump scares, but the plot in itself is interesting and goes to a deeper level then the Ju On types of movies.

Footprints, night vision, and a picture in the attic. It's for children. And doors moving, forgot about that. It was just the most over-hyped movie since Blair Witch.

I just don't get scared when people make stupid choices, I can't get into it when I think it's scripted.

It's always scripted of course, but I want to feel like it isn't.

If that makes any sense at all.

There are a few movies I haven't seen that have been mentioned in this thread, I'll be taking a look at them.

Also was looking up Let The Right One In, not the remake in english. The english one wasn't exactly scary, but wasn't horrible, so I would like to see the original.

I haven't really dived in JP horrors at all, and I hear they make the best scary movies, so there is still hope for me maybe :x

I will second the above.

I meet VERY FEW people who have similar taste in horror movies.

I categorize my favorites as "dread" horror. It's a category reserved for movies that specifically or thematically illustrate a fundamentally wrong (evil) event and attempt to resolve it.

Various examples come to mind:

Ring = drowned children
Silent Hill = burning children?
Devil's Rejects = collusion of a group doing HORRIBLE things
Event Horizon = .... where do I begin?

I say "wasn't horrible" as in wasn't horrible in scares. I enjoyed the movie.
