You also errorenously thought up of a fantasy where I compared FF to TERA. Pointing out the traits of either is what I did, and the interpretation of said information is not mine to make for you.
Its staff listens to player suggestions and draw the line when suggestions become absurd. Until recently, SE staff did not.
Following todays translation of upcoming overhauls to FF, I am very interested to see where it ends up going. If they take the same route with 14 revamped, I anticipate it will be a success.

They are definitely not going to overhaul the game engine for 11, like they are doing with 14.

Your expert analysis is definitely appreciated!

I'm surpised that ffxi is not free-to-play atm. maybe it's because japanese developers have no experience in that area?. they are still making some mad money with subs based fees tho. but it could be better if free-to-play. 12.99 is quite expensive for a game that doesn't even have pvp/ very old

not to troll, or incite an arguement, but I feel like if the next single player title is similar to 13, it would "destroy" square-enix in this fans' mind. nevermind stupid 14.

I'm lumping the sequels in with the original in my mind, so it's not as painful, but ya I was aware of that one too.

I'm pretty sure SE planned on FF13 being a 3-parter before the first one even released.
That said, I have Part 1 and Part 2 sitting on my shelf still in their shrink-wrap... I'm diehard enough to buy em, but because of the generally poor reception I haven't brought myself to play them yet :x

I struggled though quite a few hours of 13 before I said to myself "huh, I can watch a movie without mashing X, this is stupid"

To be fair, the first few hours of every FF is spent mashing X.

not really.
exploration was a large part of other titles.
*edit*
***, some parts didn't even give you a clue as to where to go other than "head west"
*edit*
gdi I didn't want to get into this arguement again. I realize some people liked 13. that is fine. I am just not one of those people.

While a mainstream single-player FF title doing poorly would be bad for the company, that is still one amongst many titles that is meant to be released once, get hyped, sold, and then move on, so to speak. Even if XIV ended up with a mixed reception like XIII did, an MMO tanking is far more catastrophic because developers shouldn't ever expect to recuperate all their money into an MMO through box sales alone.

I understand that. I was speaking to my own opinion, not fiscally.

Nah, I get that. I'm not sure why you would take that attitude though, Final Fantasy is one of the strangest series in existence in that every numbered title is so radically different from the last. This is both a good and a bad thing.

I guess I'm just hoping that 15 isn't even a shadow of crap-o 13.
again, I realize my opinion is not fact, nor is it even a majority. I'm ok with that.

I'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere in the last 7 pages, but @OP: That's incredibly unsurprising news. It's surprising that FFXIV didn't kill SE already, making those mistakes again would obviously be fatal.
@the FFXIII debate: I only recently bought it, hated everything about it until around the end of disk 2 where I started to only dislike it a bit. By the time I finished it and played a little end-game I thought it was kinda ok, that's about it. Exploration is 99% non-existent, story is pants-on-head HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE, acting is annoying as ***, battle system is HORRIBLE, leveling up system gives only a tiny amount of control, and no control at all in end-game, pre-emptive system is HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE because mob's agro AI is *** in the head, and you can get through the entire game without ever getting to ride a chocobo. Oh, and once you do get to ride one, they're *** pointless too, I think they only unlock one area.
Can't imagine why I'd bother with -2 or -3, haven't all FF sequels (aside from tactics) been ***? It doesn't worry me about the future of FF though, as someone said, they're all so different from each other, 15 will (probably) be a ***load better than 13. (and hopefully 14ARR won't be ***)

Changing FFXI's game model to a F2P model would bring in very few new people to the game, and would just piss off and alienate most of the serious players who have everything when they find out that the only way to get that new piece of gear is to buy it with real money.

FFXIII sucked, FFXIII-2 was awesome. I wouldn't say XIII sucked personally, it was just a different game from what people were expecting. XIII-2 on the other hand I agree, it was pritty much everything people wanted in XIII but didn't get. I get why people would feel turned off by it being a sequal to a game they didn't like but I feel like they might miss out a bit by giving it a fair shot.
Lightning looks cool, but has the most boring personality ever. Does she smile at all? Christ. To be fair some of her last words to her sister after being told she was a l'cie were along the lines of "If that is true I will hunt you down and kill you." when she thought it wasn't true... I'd say it's not uncalled for that she would be an unhappy person for much of the game.
They are definitely not going to overhaul the game engine for 11, like they are doing with 14. Not a full overhaul no, but I think I remember them alot of stuff was being looked at back when SoA was announced... what that will translate to in reality we will see in March I guess.

I said it from day one: if they just had consolidated the budget into FFXI, they'd have a fully functioning MMO with tons of content, and they wouldn't have suffered nearly as much damage or shame. Maintain one MMO until its death, while carrying on with their single player titles. They were too ambitious with XIV.
FFXI is dead no one going to play it even if they make a FFXI 2 it would only draw in the people who play FFXI. If they don't make a new game with new idea and storyline like FFXIV with new battle system and a new storyline they would not draw in new people.
FFXI is dead it's time to move on i enjoy that game for 6years now it noting but a shell of itself. Wow, haven't seen you in like over a year since I used to post on eorzeapedia all the time, and you're still trolling?
FFXI is not dead. It has a lot more subs than FFXIV had before it shutdown. Obviously, FFXIV wasn't drawing anyone in, either. Hopefully ARR will succeed. That doesn't mean FFXI is dead, or WoW is dying, like you loved to claim in the past.
Quote: FFXIII sucked, FFXIII-2 was awesome. Personally, I liked the overall storylines of XIII, I just didn't like a few of the characters. I also didn't like the battle system. FFXIII-2 fixed most of my complaints, and even though the story could be a bit silly and convoluted, I enjoyed it.

http://kotaku.com/5963155/new-final-fantasy-xiv-director-talks-about-what-went-wrong-with-the-original
Naoki Yoshida has revealed that he feels another mistake like Final Fantasy XIV would end up "destroying" Square Enix.
Speaking with Kotaku, the game's producer and director explained that his team is fully aware of the pressure on them to salvage the brand's reputation following the poor reception the MMO received. He asserted that this was why they were determined not to launch the revamped Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn until they feel the game is ready.
"We won't make a mistake like FFXIV again," he said. "If we did, it would be like at the level of destroying the company."
Final Fantasy XIV launched back in 2010 to a negative reaction from fans and critics alike, resulting in Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada saying "the Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged."
Just why the game didn't fare particularly well has been the subject of much scrutiny over the last couple of years, but now Yoshida himself has waded in with his thoughts. Filling both the producer and director roles for the game since December 2010, when the previous producer of the game resigned and left the company, he's now revealed he had qualms about the state of the game even before he was involved with it.
"When I heard that it was going to go on sale as planned, I thought, that will probably be a big mistake," he admitted, before saying he believes the fundamental error made was that lessons weren't learned from other MMOs. The original team supposedly were just trying to make an MMO that felt different from Final Fantasy XI, which Yoshida believes was a mistake.
"I think it would've been good if they tried seeing what happened if they turned World of Warcraft into Final Fantasy. So, because they tried only to make something that was 'different from FFXI,' they ended up with not much of anything.
"They should have said, 'Hey you, go play WoW for a year [for inspiration].'
"Unless you are a genius, you cannot make something completely new from nothing."
There's still no set launch date for the revamped Final Fantasy XIV, though it's expected to appear around the middle of 2013. The PlayStation 3 version is also still in development, with more details expected on that soon.
