Its a waste cause he will end up with 1.25GB with the other one.

Nothing wrong with a hybrid drive, but I don't see the point since, he would have a large secondary drive anyway. Also Hybrids are slower in general use than a real SSD.

The higher resolution can actually cause your frame rates to drop. You wont notice the difference in image, but will notice the slow downs.

none of what you just said here makes any sense, especially since I wasn't talking of using a hybrid drive...

you insisted that the laptop with the dual drives is a waste because he's taking one out.

and it can if you have a shitty video card, or a larger screen, hence why I recommend a 15.6" with a 1920x1080 resolution over the 1600x900 17.3

The Dual Harddrive Support I caught :P even notice that when I read it on newegg.

And you made a valid point of installing an SSD.
My curiosity though is can you just move the current windows files from the prestock hardrive to the new SSD.

Probably voids warranty if you do *shrugs*

My only confusion at first was the difference between the optical drives haha

Yea external harddrive im not concern with nor need since i have 500GB external (won at a contest) that i rarely even use i use my 16GB more and i still have 11GB free on that lol

You'd want to do a fresh install, I can hook you up with a disk that you can just use your serial # on, and install the drivers manually instead of installing them with all that preloaded crapware.

Most companies don't put a "warranty sticker" on the hdd bay anymore, so you shouldn't have to worry about it, just don't tell them.

I just ordered me a 3.0GB ssd for my laptop (it was cheaper than the 6.0 and my laptop is sata2 anyway...)

I'm going to see where I want to go eat dinner tonight then I'll hop back on newegg, sorry it was a busy day yesterday for me.

then there's these 3:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=Property&N=100006740%2050001315&IsNodeId=1&maxPrice=1000&Manufactory=1315&PropertyCodeValue=393%3A49576%2C398%3A6694%2C398%3A44336%2C398%3A47205%2C400%3A40015%2C400%3A315892%2C400%3A40986%2C400%3A6723%2C400%3A292825%2C400%3A317126%2C2923%3A18470&bop=And&CompareItemList=32|34-230-352^34-230-352-TS%2C34-230-454^34-230-454-TS%2C34-230-455^34-230-455-TS

I'd probably get this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230352

while it does have the lower resolution, it does have the dual hdd bays, not sure if the other two do or not, could probably research it some as this and the one other one were in the same series.

this at least beats the Acers though.

My reply was to more than one person. Just covering all the responses. And why I don't disagree that a smaller screen will have better fps, its it a smaller screen and I'm not a fan. Agian nothing wrong with paying for a better product, but my suggestions will make him a better laptop for the budget. He doesn't require a dual HDD, that was just the product that fit the budget. Think of it as a bonus. So spending 800 on a base and 200 on upgrades, is better than buying a $1000 base.

Actually no it isn't better for his money, and a $1000 Asus is better than anything Acer puts out regardless of the specs.

And yes dual hard drive bays are pretty much essential if you want to replace one with a solid state drive in the future and not be severely limited on hard drive space internally.

however I will add that dual hard drives will take a toll on battery life, so will a larger screen.

Well I ennui getting the acer 9665 last night and so far I'm enjoying it but a bit confused....
The laptop comes with nvidia 640m
But when I go to screen resolution > advanced settings I only see the Intel HD 3000
Normally when I go to th store....I'll see the dedicated card there (if have one) on laptops.

If I go to device manager I see both of cards there

My friend said it has something to do with Nadia optimized technology but was unable to get back with him bout it....

If that's the case can someone shed some light on that.

Sounds like a batter saving option to me, doesn't use the larger card for web browsing and low end graphics. That being said I don't think Ive seen it before.

One of the acer agents on the line told me it'll switch accordingly based on what you're doing....like gaming the 640m would be on

But wanted consumer experience with it as well since until I look further into it I eoildnt know.

That's new to me

Well according to the agent I talk to earlier. the laptop was designed to use the Nvidia resolution when needed so say...games.

to see if i notice the difference, I disabled the Nvidia graphic card from device manager. to see if i'd notice a difference.

Nope...unless the emulator im using (Dolphin) specs aren't that high that integrated can run it at 100% Speed just fine...

Still trying to read more on it.....

Who uses an optical drive anymore? Find a nice thin laptop without one and buy an external drive in case you need it. :)

you need to use the Nvidia program to control the settings for that card, and you can chose when to use which card based upon programs, or all the time, or just on A/C.

me, all the time.

Typically for burning though, and typically externals either require A/C power, or dual USB and since A/C isn't always available (or multiple outlets) and limited USB ports, I like my internal.

but a lot of people don't need it, along with many other things I use.

@OP I'm sorry you bought the Acer, but I hope you don't have problems with it like every other owner I know has.

and like I said: you need to use the Nvidia control panel to play with the settings, my gf's laptop has one of the dual card settups, I wasn't very fond of it myself, was more complicated than it needed to be and it seemed rather glitchy.

Idk if you still play XI, but you may need a driver update, and to force it to always use one card or the other for XI, so it doesn't switch when you go on/off A/C power, which would probably kill directx's fullscreen (regardless if you are in fullscreen or not).

Lol if I have any issues I'll blame myself :P

And after toying with it, ive notice what you mentioned how you can set it for certain programs to use which ever otherwise it'll just pick whatever.

Currently downloading ffxi but i already have it set so that it uses the NVIDIA while ffxi is up along with the other emulators i got on it atm.

Of course hoping pso2 downloads first lol

as far as emulators go:

I'd imagine anything Playstation class and previous would probably run on the integrated at least decently.

Anything newer, you'd want the Nvidia.

but like I said: it can be a pain to set and force it sometimes, personally I think if you're always going to be on A/C just to set it to always be Nvidia, unless you don't like the heat it makes.

Eh as of now the only things game related I play ever so often are as follows:
PSX Emulator
N64 Emulator
GC Emulator
FFXI
Phantasy Star Online 2
Minecraft

That's it for now until i get into something else...

I could play those on my old laptop (on lowest graphic settins on most)
So either way this is a HUGE upgrade from that computer seeing that it's 6 years old (BIOS states manufactured in 2006)

So really Id just change those to NVIDIA.....anything else i just let the computer decide....
