What I'm saying is that the rendering is not done by the game itself. The high CPU usage is Nvidia and ATI's fault for not caring at all about d3d8. You remember back last year when the geforce drivers were causing extremely low framerates? The problem was fixed by Nvidia, not Square. When I tested with a GTS250 after the fix, the image quality was very bad, but the framerate was always capped. Nvidia may have made some sort of tradeoff in order to do the minimum amount of work to stop people from screaming.

The game renders it's graphics on host memory using that "back buffer" surface that is specified on the external game settings program.

It send the graphics to the GPU almost done, as it's the GPU which does lighting and effects.

Which is what you seen when you did your profiling. Exactly what bogs people down to a crawl are things like confluxes, telepoints and homepoint crystals. All of them abuse of lighting and particle effects.

On my PC (an old *** AMD64 X2 4200+) using 2048x2048 backbuffer the game sits eating 42% of CPU time in one of the cores. When I approach one of the offending objects (veridical conflux for example) the GPU (GTX280) starts to "sing" with some whistle which means it's drawing more power, but there is no change on the CPU usage.

Now, what you said helps a lot with understanding why older GPUs still work fine with the game, even when using the troublesome drivers.

All this stuff started with the original PlayStation, it's design of a dumb frame buffer as video hardware and a device inside the CPU called "GTE" (GeomeTry Engine) which would do the 3D stuff then pump to the frame buffer using DMA. At the time (1994) it's design was revolutionary.

SE uses that "method" just to save themselves the hassle of having to build a engine that's specific for the PC and XBOX360. Would surely help them with the XBOX360 problems if they got rid of the requirement of emulating the behavior of the PS2 Vector Units on their PC game code.

But I have a feeling they might ditch this model when the next expansion releases, having a PC specific engine ... hehe

Ah something I remembered earlier when I was at work:

IIRC X and XI were created using the same engine, no?

If yes, and they're recoding X (not saying they are, but I know they're releasing an HD version) it may bring the possibility for an XI recode much closer to reality, and really that's everyone's best hopes.
Whoaa that sounds really interesting, were you ever able to find out anything more along this vein ?

The reason for the PS3 consumers is to add more clients to the FFXI servers. its more of a manager's aspect of seeing potential revenue increase. basically, more platforms, more clients.

~~ just a thought i had overnight when i was sleeping...
With the PS2 HDD being partition from 10G to 19G. think its possible SE already has installed the basic files for the new expansion already downloaded on PS2 and just require the registration code on activation when released? it just a thought, if anyone can read the coding on the extra files, that would be great to find out.

People can rejoice and throw parties when the ps2 isn't supported any longer all they want. If you think that means they are going to start caring about this game or really make it great and take advantage of the power of pc...you are crazy. With no ps2 we would still get the same weak stuff we have been getting.
Just wanted to quote this so I can have a quick link to some lulz.

I thought maybe I was just missing something.

I'm curious how releasing a disc expansion for PS2 would work anyway. Assuming they wanted to release it for PS2 in the US, do stores even carry new games for discontinued platforms?

It's come up already in here. For PS2 it will most likely be done the same as abyssea with the files downloaded directly to the ps2 and then unlocked with the Content ID code. Meaning that update will probably be a few hours for the ps2 XD

If SONY did announce that the PS2 is a discontinued platform it would be the case. The problem is that US customers and dealers did decide that PS2 is a discontinued platform by themselves... lol

In fact, it is a bit of that patriotic feeling XBOX fanboys accuse the Japanese of having, no ? They simply replaced their PS2s with XBOX360s or PS3s. Which only a few Japanese FFXI players did.

Honest, the only thing I have been using my PS2 for the last two years been FFXI. The NPC hang bug has forced me into playing with the PC, which while annoys me a bit because I can't do things the way I want, don't prevent me from playing the game. I bet people who don't have a PC capable of playing FFXI (who does not anyway, these days ?) are suffering lol.

Well what I wanted to say is that until SONY itself pull the plug for the PS2 it is not a discontinued plattform lol.

JP page shows all 3 platforms, but the US page only states XBOX 360 and Windows supported platforms.

That was a while ago, I don't remember ... >_<

Was about SCEA stopping disc pressing for PS2 discs, right ?

Honestly I never liked SCEA and SCEE. They're idiots.

Edit:

Apparently the PS2 only disappeared from stores on the US because the retailers wanted to reclaim the shelf space to expose merchandise deemed more profitable, such Nintendo 3DS or PS Vita.

And obviously there would be no shelf space for the PS2 FFXI disc as well...

OKAY SE DOES NOT OWN "SONY"'s PlayStation SONY and SE ARE SEPARATE COMPANIES! SE CAN DO WHATEVER THE *&^%%^& THEY WANT WITH FFXI FOR any SYSTEM OR PC letting it live on or killing it. SO if they want to cut ps2 out of American FFXI 5th Expansion Pack So be it, ITs SE GAME. I understand customer loyalty but there is a limit to that. In this age where today's technology is already yesterday technology. GET OVER IT AND Move on. Defraging, compressing, zipping, archiving, disk clean up, and deleting unused files can only take you so far 20gig HDD is still a 20gig HDD no matter how much processing power it has or recoding the source code there is a limit to how much of sheer Data can be stored on it on the 20Gig HDD and ps2 is so far out is production cycle for its hardware insane. As a company sony i wouldnt even bother making any new hard drive for just one game not worth the man power or money where there is other avenues of the game to come out as.

ALSO SONY HAS NOT Been MAKING ANY MONEY ON FFXI FOR While since WOTG and thats the initial sales of the copy of the game. all other moneys are going to SE.

FINALLY IF YOU OWN A PS2 and play FFXI on it. YOu where playing on borrowed time as it was. cancel your account, rage and flame SE with mass emails, do what ever you want that's your god given right
all that means to me is less competition for NMS in the new areas. or more cause of old players getting pc and coming back to the game

There is an interview posted on ZAM that says:

Quote:
FinalFantasy.de: There is no version of Final Fantasy XI for the PS3. Are there any plans to develop one? In Europe, there are no HDDs available for the PS2.

A: At the moment, there are no plans to develop a PS3 version. They already have the PS2 game, and they plan to continue supporting the PS2. They don't feel it would be the best use of resources to work on the PS3. Unfortunately, Square Enix is not a hardware manufacturer. They would love to release a HDD, but there is nothing they can do.

You're so wrong on several counts it's almost humorous.

First off: The PS2's HDD is 40GB, count that 40. Secondly until recently the partition size was about 12 to about 21GB, so until recently they've been working with 12GB of space, and since they increased it, they plan to continue using the system, as they probably have to pay SE royalty fees to increase the partition, and to go through the trouble of DNAS authentication for it (Thanks to Leo for that info).

Also: Sony probably gets royalty fees anyway, since every PS2 user authenticates on the DNAS server BEFORE anything else.

So they did what was needed to be done and increase the size, SE has never had any plans to cancel PS2 support, and will never, the only thing that will probably end that is the end of the DNAS service.

As for your "funny" picture, the PS2 has little to nothing to do with holding the game back, if anything it makes them actually have to keep their code not tremendous and demanding on resources, whicch if it didn't 360's would lock up more, and there'd be more issues on the PC as well.

If you had bothered to actually read the thread you would know that the issue is with the game's code, and not the PS2, and even if they randomly "dropped PS2 support" they aren't going to rewrite their code.

I'm sorry but your information is flawed. the problem on the ps2 and xbox it's not the HardDisk size (not anymore atm) but the the RAM.

Recently they stated that the xbox gets locked down because memory problems going @ Abyssea, they actually put this information on some patch updates. That explains why most words on the auto-translate are not on the game. They said this several times on interviews.

This game have a lot of limitation and it will never get recoded and revamped in terms of graphics/textures, unless they drop the ps2 version that also have a very limited gpu.

it was never the hard disk size, it was the partition size, the ram isn't really much of an issue.

the 360 has a lot more issues, but we're not going to go there.

as for the auto translate, they can easily change how that's handled, and yet they don't, it's not really that important anyway.

you did say one part that was right, until you added the "unless"

it will never get recoded /end

also: apparently you didn't read earlier, the main issue with the PC version is that it emulates the PS2's graphic handling, they can change that, without dropping the PS2.
