PS2 had an expansion on space recently, I don't know the details but this is why most likely.

Announcing it now and not having it out for 6+ months is just going to kill a lot of buzz, esp with XIV 2.0, GW2 etc, coming out before then.

PS2 limitations = DEV laziness...

If they're putting work on this scale they finally decided to NOT kill FFXI and will put effort on fixing it.

PS2 space alloted to FFXI was doubled and now is 20GB.
