There are specially made wooden weapons with specific weight distributions used for learning.

Boukens and Shinaiis are a good example. There are claymores, long-swords and short-swords as well.

swinging a sword around does nothing if you don't have the proper footwork to back it up

That goes with most anything involving your hands: baseball swing, pitching, golf swing, boxing, shooting all heavily revolve around the leg/footwork

well baseball, yeah theres proper stances and stuff. and with guns same thing.

probably the closests thing of those to using a sword or w/e is going to be boxing. its that constant movement and not standing still and knowing how to pace yourself while moving around and taking your swings. gives a really good cardio workout.

on top of that is the various techniques you can learn on how to make the different cuts/slashes at the targets you intend and still having control of the weapon.

I was just stating that most activities rely on the feet and core, not really the arms. Sweet, all this searching has changed my usual FFXI gil ad to sword ads. Looks so much better.

I wouldn't be looking at doing this for a workout, I'm conditioning to be an athlete again; but I would love proper training on true sword technique.

you can check with any major university thats nearby. most of them have informal classes in fencing or kendo/kenjutsu. and you can check the various martial art schools in your area for similar things.

I've broken a few fingers with a bouken, myself. And don't kid yourself, arms are a huge point of importance with swords, especially two-handers. Thrust and control are something that even veterans have to maintain.

There are 5 colleges in my town, and I can without doubt guarantee you that none of them have fencing

I'll take what I can get until I get to a point to self train and know I'm making positive progress. Anything is better than out here as far as that, though. I love hunting, don't get me wrong; but if it doesn't have antlers or feathers and doesn't involve a gun or bow or 4wd, people around here want nothing to do with it. Oh, or beer and their sister.

That's not good enough for my wife. However, Remington does a good job of keeping watch. He's a good guy, kind of loud though.

Since you're in the Austin area, have you heard of Angel swords in driftwood? They aren't cheap but they are the best I've ever owned.

I live in Dallas but they attend Scarborough faire each year.

Ah, I read that all wrong then. Either way though, these are generally out of most people's price range. My Katana was 2700 from back when I actually had disposable income... But if you ever get a chance to visit their forge or one of the faires they open shop at, I'd recommend holding a few of them or seeing if they'll let you slice a tatami mat. It's epic fun.
